Jax The senior Naval officer in the Jacksonville area, Rear Admiral

$ r Lawrence R. Geis, will be relieved of his command here tomorrow in ceremoniesthat
will also mark his retirement from active duty.
Rear Admiral Norman K. Greenwho recently assumed duties as CommanderSea

Based Anti Submarine Warfare Wings, Atlantic, will relieve Adm. Geis of his
coordination responsibilities over Jacksonville area Navy activities, and Rear

Admiral John C. Dixon, Jr., will assume duties as Commander Tactical Wings
Atlantic. Adm. Dixon will move his headquarters to Naval Air Station, Oceana,


Va.Adm.. Geis will be bringing to a close a Navy career that began with his
: % rTkM graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy with the Class of 1939. He has accepted

Ma employment with Florida Junior College and will reamain in the Jacksonvillearea.

.
Prior to reporting to this area in June 1971 as Commander Fleet Air,

Ek Jacksonville, Adm Geis served for three years as the Navy's Chief, of In-
k formation in Washington, D.C. Other assignments since he was promoted to
Rear Admiral in 1965 have been as Chief of the U.S. Naval Mission to Brazil andas
Commander Carrier Division 4 in the attack aircraft carriers USS Americaand
4
USS Independence.Adm. .
Geis was serving on the destroyer USS Mahan at Pearl Harbor on
December 7, 1941 when the Japanese attacked and saw further action with that
ship in the Battles of the Gilberts, Marshalls and Midway. He received his

"Wings" in 1943, returned to the Pacific theatre of operations as executive of-

ficer of Patrol Bombing Squadron 54, and participated in the Palau, Leyte,
Mindoro and Lingayen Gulf campaigns.After .
the war his duties included command of a fighter squadron; commanderof

a Carrier Air Group; an Executive officer to the USS Lake Champlain;

commander of a Fighter Air Development Squadron; Command of USS DuxburyBay
flagship of the U.S. Middle East Force; and commander of the 77,000 ton

attack aircraft carrier USS Forrestal.In .
I addition to his flag assignments, Adm. Geis had duty ashore in the Office of

RAdm. Geis the Chief of Naval Operations; Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River,
Maryland; in the Net Evaluation Sub Committee, National Security Council; and
as Executive Assistant to the Chief of Naval Operations.Adm. .

Geis has completed the National War College Course and a course in
VP-30 here
moving Advanced Management at Harvard Business School. His awards include two

Legions of Merit, the Air Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Medal, and numerous

clubhouse with President Mrs. Harry McAllister presiding.
Mrs.John Morton was welcomed back from Iceland and Mrs. Bill

"Woodpeckers"of VP-49 returned home to NAS Jax this week,completing a five and one-

half month deployment to Naval Station Keflavik, Iceland.
Cdr. Victor S. Gulliver. VP-49's commanding officer, turned the responsibilities of the Iceland
Sp11CTUARY !N THE patrol missions over to the VP-45"Pelicans",who began their first Iceland deployment in the P-3C.

>f 0 SEEP Labrador to Norway and from Bermuda to high above the Arctic Circle.
The Woodpecker banner has been carried to Norway, Denmark, Holland, Great Britain and

Canada as part of the United States commitment to NATO.
VP-49 has also hosted crews from these same countries in Keflavik as part of the reciprocatingeffort
of NATO countries to familiarize themselves with each other's aircraft,airfields and facilities.The .
return to Jacksonville marks the end of the squadron's fourth consecutive deployment to

Keflavik.
Last year the squadron endured a severe North Atlantic
winter in Iceland with treacherous weather and dark days"brightened"by the Northern Lights.The
1974 deployment was brighter, however, stretching from Spring to Summer with many days of
almost total daylight.
The Woodpeckers will soon be settled in their nest at Hangar 1000 and will resume training and
operations over the Western Atlantic and Caribbean under the operational control of COMPATWING

Jax-Adverse publicity is what the station Master-at-Armsforce has ,'
been getting in the past,due to the attitudes of either the force itself or
the people who have to be reminded how to wear their uniform!
According to AZCM H.S. Williams, CMAA, the consistent violatorsof
a neat and military appearance are transit personnel rehabilitation r n
centers and the Naval Regional Medical Center.The other tennant
commands are a pretty squared away lot, with the exception of the t.
small percentage that have to be constantly told how to maintain a
neat appearance.
Master Chief Williams works directly for the Executive Officer and
,his main job is to see that good order and discipline is maintained on
the base, in such places as.the base theatre, clubs and the bowling
alley.
Since people still try to sneak off base in dungarees, checking cars t / di 7 d' ..d.
going out the gates has become necessary. Checking personnel to .
make sure they are wearing the right combination of dungarees is also I

necessary.For f
health reasons, tney also check personnel going into the dining .
haymaking sure that the right attire is being worn. ii-i : r
The MAA's perform the duty of escorting for conflnees to Captain'sMast
and returning U.A.'s who had been awarded a sentence to the
Correctional Center.So .

Jax-This week we received a contribution of recipes from Mrs.
Florence Anders of the Navy Disease Vector Ecology and Control
Office. One of those recipes allows us to follow our policy of providing
our readers with recipes that enable them to make use of produce thatis
in abundant supply and at an economical price.

Onion Casserole .
,, : 2 Ibs. (about 15 small l onions) ,
or large jar of precooked onions
3 tablespoons butter or oleo
3 tablespoons flour
IVi cups milk
l/z teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons prepared mustard
:r j"MAD 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
,,1 L Me cup chopped nuts

Cook onions in boiling salted water until tender; drain. Arrange in
/ greased baking dish.Melt butter;blend in flour.Gradually stir in milk
and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until thick. Stir in salt,
: : mustard, and worcester hire sauce and pour over onions. Sprinklenuts
: : over top> Bake in moderate oven ((350 degrees) 10 to 15 minutes.

on Jacksonville Naval Air Station. As a =
Department of the Army civilian, Mr. Close recently spent five years in the Canal Zone where he
wrote a weekly stamps news column
for the SOUTHERN COMMAND NEWS (joint service
newspaper) and later for the English edition of THE PANAMA AMERICAN. He is recognized as an
expert in Latin American philately in general,and Panama and Canal Zone in particular.
Any people interested in the formation of a stamp club on the Jacksonville Naval Air Station may

New Zealand health stamps are one of the most popular postal tax stamps being collected today.
August 7th will see a new issue of three values to support the children's health camps throughout the
country

Three, four and five cent postage rates plus one cent on each for the health tax make up the set,
adding a miniature sheet of the 4c + Ic in two rows of five.
This health series for the first time features the theme of children's pets. Past issues have usually
shown the British Royal Family,birds,children at play and sport.
The Republic of Colombia recently released a commemorative honoring Madre Laura Montoya,
the famous Colombian missionary nun. Mother Montaya was born in Jerico, Department of An-
tioquia, Colombia in 1874.
In her 75 years of living this extraordinary woman founded 71 houses of her missionary order in
Colombia, 17 in Ecuador and 2 in Venezuela. Dedicated to the Indian population in particular this
work involved Mother Montoya in the deeper understanding of the native culture and language. As a
writer alone, she produced 15 large volumes about religion, mysticism, missionary work and
teaching as a science.
She did much research in the native Indian dialects, and helped the documentation and understanding
of native legends and culture in general. As a writer she helped found the magazine +
"Almas" (souls). Her autobiography is considered a literary jewel in Latin American literature.
Mother Montoya died in Medellin, Colombia in October 1949. She has been presented for
beatification as a Saint,and this matter is under study in Rome right now.
Loving care has gone into the Vatican City's recent'triptych commemorating the seventh centenary .
of the death of St.Thomas Aquinas.That philosopher writer is honored with the reproductionof

Jax-HS-5 held its annual change of command ceremony June 28 with LCdr. E.
R. Sands relieving Cdr A.L. Kruger as the"Night Dippers" skipper.
Capt. W. F. Meyer was the guest speaker and LCdr. D.P. Fisher took over the
duties of squadron XO.
LCdr. Sands attended Chicago Teachers College before entering the Navy in

1958. .
He reported to HS-9 at NAS Quonset Point after receiving his wings and
commission as Ensign. While attached to HS-9 he served as Airframes Officer,
Schedules Officer and Safety Officer.
: } In 1954 he was a member of a five-plane detachment from HS-9 that first
evaluated the CV concept while aboard the USS Forrestal for a two-month
exercise.
_
In May 1964, LCdr.Sands reported aboard USS Vancouver (LPD-2)) for duty as

j Air Department Officer. During this tour, the ship supported U.S. Marine troops
throughout the 1968 Tet Offensive. LCdr. Sands received the Navy Com-
mendation Medal for his actions during that period. From August 1969 to July

I Navy Relief fund drive hits record high. I



Jax-This'year's Navy Relief Society Fund Drive reached a record
high for the Jacksonville-Georgia area.
A total of$55,016.89 was collected-110 percent of the$50,000 goal.
Leading the way were the three major Naval Activities under
: ; TACAIRLANT: NAS Jacksonville ($4,463.85)) NAS Cecil Field
(4046.29 and NAS Glynco Ga. ($5,102.22)).
r Full credit must be given to all keymen whose hard work and
dedicated support to the program ensured its success. Of particularnote
; are those who surpassed their assigned monetary goals.
Equal credit goes to the civilian employees who donated to the drive
