Jax-Who says it's hard to get your message to the President? All AA L Ls k r.
Larry Mitivier had to do was throw a bottle into the ocean and the
current did the rest. P P
8'i
Attached to HS-15's Line Division, Larry was standing a watch gym
aboard USS Guam in, March during the ship's final Sea Control
evaluation when another sailor tossed a ketchup bottle over the side
with a message in it.Larry followed his buddy's example and made up
l his own message""to whom it may concern," saying "I'm aboard the
USS Guam,I had nothing to do so I'm writing you. If you find it please
write to (Larry's grandfather's address) and tell them you found this
message from their grandson."
Over the side went the bottle.
Two months and 250 miles later the bottle washed up on a beach in
the Bahamas at the feet of President Nixon.

Complying with Larry's message Nixon called the young airman's lue u, u "
grandfather Sunday night. i iv
"I would have been happy if somebody-anybody-found the messagein
ten years"Larry said,"but this is unreal."
It's not so unreal that he won't try it again, though.
Larry says there's going to be another bottle in the Atlantic when he
heads for Iceland next month.

Prisoners' "hard I labor saves $114,000 lilHIMmniMMMBBI 1.t I

The NAS Jax Correctional Center is embarking on a new Work and Training Program. Not for -
sometime have persons sentenced for "confinement at hard labor" engaged in busting rocks or
digging holes and filling them back up again. Confinees have instead been working at a number of :
productive tasks, with a special emphasis on base beautification. Public Works, Special Services, _
Supply Center Disposal Yard and the Enlisted Dining Hall have all used prisoner labor to everyone's
advantage. In fact, a 1973 survey showed that work accomplished by persons confined at the
NAS Correction Center saved the base nearly $114,000. .t.tYw
Work Supervisor MAC Billy Lancaster and his assistant IC1 Ron Mason have recently expandedthe
program so that base parolees (confines for whom little supervision is required) can work and
learn at the same time. Several activities have provided an atmosphere where a young man L
becomes a valuable member of the work team. He often learns new skills or improves his knowledge 3
within his rating.
The Work and Training Program, although new, shows great promise in providing a learning and R'r
motivating environment for the. great majority of confinees who return to dutv. .
