Your Shore Patrol todayJaxThe

flEtD EApKHNCK

Shore Patrolman today in the Jacksonville area,is a ? :: [ [ JAil
trained professional who very seldom walks a "beat",doesn't carry a T ENTERING
i !
billy club unless absolutely necessary,and still gets the job done. l \' ;.; ;
His main duty is to assist all members of the Armed Forces in their ,
time of need and trouble. '
Jacksonville Area Shore Patrol operates as a division of the I 'flfliPI
Security Department under the direction of LCdr. Charles A. Taylor, a _
with its Shore Patrol Headquarters located at 350 E. State Street in iiiI
downtown Jacksonville, under the direction of Gunnery Sergeant
Robert D. Kane.
The Jacksonville Area Shore Patrol is assigned that part of Duval
County lying north of the St. Johns River and west of the Inland I vt 1r
Waterway, plus 24 other Florida counties and three counties in
southern Georgia. + r
The Shore Patrol does not punish violators of military law, nor
does it permit mistreatment or abuse of personnel in its charge.
Whenever placed under apprehension for military charges, the in
dividual taken to Shore Patrol headquarters, advised of his rights,
searched and detained while a report is prepared and his duty officeris
notified of his apprehension.
Female offenders are searched only by another woman of appropriate -
status. Male apprehending authorites may, if such action is
reasonable and proper under existing circumstances, search a female
offender's handbag,luggage,coat (after removal)or parcels.As .
soon as possible the individual is transported to his or her com-
mand and turned over to the duty officer with a handwritten copy of
the Shore Patrol report. (1 -i
The Shore Patrol visits transportation centers to offer members of _
the Armed Forces assistance and to check for uniform violations.
They also check eating establishments offbase at the noon hour for
personnel wearing an improper uniform (dungarees).
Members of the Armed Forces charged with civil offenses take,up
most of the Shore Patrolman's time. Having well coordinated liaison
established with the civilian authorities, the Shore Patrol is able to
negotiate a face bond for military personnel under civil arrest for
misdemeanors when Commanding Officers will guarantee their ap
pearance in court. ..RR
Personnel selected for Shore Patrol duty today are chosen on the
basis of their natural aptitude for the duty: maturity, high qualities of
leadership, tact, and sound judgement. Only mature petty officers, E-
5 and above, over 21-years old are selected.
Good petty officers and an effective NCOIC make a strong Shore
Patrol Team. They are proving that with properly trained men and
good public relations, servicemen will show their appreciation.
