''Batman flight crew rescues civilian pilot Jax-0utstanding Flight Assist"-that's what the log book at the irLr FAA's Air Traffic Control (ATC) Center at Jacksonville International Airport reads. It is a record of how one of VP-24's P-3 C "Orions"helped a light civilian aircraft. The Batman crew's day started off with a 4 a.m. briefing on a "routine" instrument airways flight. On board would be Lt. Bill : Gottschalk, aircraft commander; Ltjg( ) Smart, co-pilot; AW2 Nyren, ,Mk radar operator; ADJ1 Witmer, flight engineer; AT1 Rustman, inflight technician: and ADI Lambert, ordnanceman. The . Ic weather at the time of briefing was less than 200 foot overcast in fog. That was bad enough to delay the flight about four hours. At . 7:15 p.m. the "Orion" was about 60 miles north of Jacksonville under the control of the Jacksonville Center after letting down from 4 23,000 feet to 3,000 feet. At the same time, the controller saw the transponder returns from a w civilian Cessna 206 he was also controlling disappear from his radar display. All radio communication attempts were futile. The controller then asked "Navy LR 615" to verify that the civilian x r t aircraft was at 5,000 feet since he had just lost all radio and radar contact. Lt.Gottschalk immediately volunteered his assistance and followedJacksonville y9r t Center's instructions until he visually sighted the Cessna. He . a e then slowed the"Orion" from 240 knots to 140 knots by droppinghis t landing gear and extending his flaps. After maneuvering the "Orion" so he could fly wing on the Cessna, he learned through hand [ p t I signals that the civilian pilot wanted to land as soon as possible.Lt. . r. Gottschalk had his co-pilot relay the information back to Jax Center. Back at NAS Jax, the weather was partially obscured, ceiling 800 feet overcast and 3 miles visability outside of the clouds. That's bad with no instruments. E The Cessna had now tucked under the Orion's wing and was keepingup with it.'Center . vectored the two aircraft for a radar ground controlled approach (GCA) at NAS Jax. The VP-24 aircraft was on base leg at 1,600 feet, about two miles from Herlong Field, when the Cessna pilot saw Herlong's runway lights through a break in the clouds and broke off through the hole to a safe landing. As . soon as the civilian pilot got to a telephonehe called Jacksonville The Rental People People Likg Center and told them he'd had a complete electrical failure, and wanted to thank the Navy pilot and crew for helping him out of what could have been a disaster.Lt. . Gottschalk and his 'Batman' crew have received a Letter of WantYou Commendation from the Jacksonville Air Traffic Control Facility for their assistance. "Can I assist in any way?" That phrase has probably saved many fellow airmen-both civilian and military. Win a Lt. Gottschalk and his-crew, who immediately volunteered their help after an already long day, established high standards for. othersto follow. ..... ,..., ., ....... .... .. .. ....,.............. : : ::.x : :':':: '' -v-: :<<:::: : '<*X:<'>X -:<<::-:::..::::::::::::::: Bike '. Simply stated, the Center is a cen- 5 tralized location where you can have official correspondence prepared in minutes. The main purpose of WPC is to provide major clerical support for all station departments and special assistance. These services include typing, transcriptionand w n r. proofreading. The . focal point of the Word Processing Program is the WPCs into which all four written communications will be directed from the two main sources of dic tation. They are ((1)) the telephone and ((2)) cordless portable units. The WPC will be handled by one supervisor and seven Correspondence 1 SecretarySpecialists. When . the Center is completely operational, it will also have another con- venience available. The new convenience will be a "Dial in-put" system, better known as picking up your telephone and dictating what you want, and it will be recorded, then transcribed and typed smooth by one of the Secretaries. So . keep in mind that your clerical workload can be chopped in half by the Word Processing Center.
