The classes of Miss Cynthia Segraves and Mrs. Nan Stores were given an F ,
audio-visual presentation and treated to an informative and exciting tour of a P-

3C "Orion" by Lt. Ed Lackey, Ltjg( ) Ted Samples, Ltjg( ) Terry Crescimanno,
AWC Josh Pierce and AT2 Joe Pazzelli.

High points of the youngsters' visit included a chance to sit at the individualcrew 11

positions, talking with their friends over the aircraft's intercom system,
and wearing a "Mae West" life jacket. .

The young visitors thoroughly enjoyed their tour of the "Pelican's Nest" and

showed their appreciation by sending thank-you notes and pictures to the
squadron.

The Navy Regional Medical Center's Drug Screening
Laboratory has been cited as the best such DoD facility: in quality
control during the past year.
I e During 1973 the laboratory maintained a 99.6 percent accuracy rate,
including a 100 percent rating during the last three months of the year.
Established over two years ago as part of the DoD drug abuse
counter-offensive, the laboratory aids in the identification of drug
abusers by chemical analysis of urine samples.This .
analysis determines the presence or absence of amphetamines,
barbituates and opiates.
One of 11 similar DoD laboratories performing drug analysis, the
NRMC lab recorded its high quality control by correctly identifyingboth
drug positive and negative samples submitted for identificationby j
the Drug Testing Quality Control Laboratory in Washington, D.C.

Manned by two skilled hygienists from the Navy Industrial Environmental -
Health Center (NIEHC), the versatile van provides on-
site capabilities for testing the elements in dust.gasses.radiation and
other contaminants which could impair the health of thousands of
aircraft workers.
NAVY The team of Arthur Johnston and Steven Pierce recently brought
INDUSTRIAL
the van to NARF to conduct an occupational health survey of
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH ( production areas here.Their studies included assessment of the noise
CINCINNATI OHI factor in jet engine test cells, examination of pollutants such as acid
mists in the plating shops, and measurement of chemical contaminators -
and other hazards to which employees are exposed.
Critical situations which create immediate health hazards are
corrected at once upon recommendation of the survey team.
Modifications for improving the work climate, including proposal of
alternative measures, also are provided by the team in a format
which permits rapid engineering and cost analysis.
The standards set forth in the Occupational Safety and Health Act
(OSHA) determine the order of priority for corrective action. Com
pliance with all the standards, within a specified time frame, is the
aim of the Naval Air Systems Command in ordering the NARFs
surveyed. The survey team places priorities on non-compliance
operations according to standards set by 0 HA for adequate health
safeguards, recommending a schedule for total compliance. Final
reports of survey findings are sent to Naval Air Systems Command
Headquarters.
