'400 Years' performed at NAS

Jax-There is,and in all probability will be for some time,controversy about the validity of Black
History Week. The celebrations are going to be defended to the last by those feeling it to be a
necessity in today's White oriented society. On the other hand, it is going to be seen by many as

"another piece of tokenism".

Whatever your views on the subject, you need to see the Afro-Theatrical Group's production "400
Years of Changes".A version of this dramatic play was presented by the Group in King Hall Monday ---wt
night in opening day celebrations of Black History Week. .

Despite a less than expected turn-out,the Group,
brilliantly dept t the plight of the American Black man for the past 400 years from the African
jungles and tribal dance to the American ghetto and the Saturday night party.
One of the most moving and best portrayed scenes of the play was the slavery and slave trading
scene. The Group adds emphasis to the scene with moving renditions of"Go Down Moses", "Swing
and "Morning is Here, Gotta Move On".These songs

combined with slave auction scenes and auctioneer cries of, "This Nigger claims he's the son of an
African Chief.Can I get$5 thousand for him?",adds an air of authenticity to the word"slavery".

The play moves rapidly through the annals of time,pausing to show changes in the life style of
Black man,but never in the happy-go-lucky attitudes which motivate him.

The church is spotlighted with its collections and prayers and a powerful sermon. "When Z
Africa,we were not called Niggers.We were not called Negroes.We were not colored.Why should we
be now?," the screaming minister wants to know.
From the church the group moves into the party,noting that the ceremonies and rituals performedin
the two are not so unlike.After scenes of "partying"and "boogying"the play concludes with its

most In the powerful closing scene.act,a young boy is raped of his resistance to drugs by his junkie brother and Slimthe
drug dealer,while another of the boy's junkie brothers pleads with the pair to give the boy a chance to

live a normal life.
The play will be repeated in King Hall tomorrow at 7:30p.m.Uyou are one of the few who don't see
how Black History Week will help America to understand,maybe you should attend.

Each hospital, civilian or military, has its own "code" for ; ,. ( '.". '.<.{""f....", c
patients who are in cardiac arrest so that the news may be rapidly '
spread to the hospital staff without causing undue alarm to other
personnel. The Naval Regional Medical Center's code is "CRT", t
meaning Cardiac Resuscitation Team. tJ -1
Since keeping one select "CRT" available 24 hours a day would be :
impossible, the alarm response to a "CRT" call involves numerous 1L*
personnel,all of whom respond no matter what the hour may be. .
In these photographs,we have a patient in cardiac arrest arriving at ,I.
the Medical Center Emergency Room. As the patient is brought ;
through the door,the first available physician makes a rapid! check of i
the patient to confirm the tentative diagnosis. This exam includes a s ', f
rapid check of the patient for heart tones,distance pulses, respiratoryeffort
pupils, color, all within seconds.If \ :
the diagnosis is correct, almost immediately a flurry of activity .
begins while medical personnel sound the general "CRT" alarm. The 4't
emergency room physician begins basic resuscitative steps. '
Basically, three steps are needed; (1)) establish an airway, ((2)
establish ventilation, ((3)) establish circulation. A suction apparatusand
a "bag-and-mash" with oxygen are used to establish an airway '"'rV/ -
and effective ventilation while an assistant begins closed chest
'
massage. "
As soon as more personnel arrive on the scene, an elect
trocardiogram machine is attached to the patient and an intravenousroute ::" .J. '" "
is established.The I. :
two major specialists responding to the "CRT" call are the ;'t/' :: .
Anthesiologist and Cardiologist. The Anthesiologist assumes :...... t. .
responsibility for the airway passage and ventilation normally bv i -
attaching the tube to an inflative bag with oxygen. He also assists the -TRANSFER patient from stretche
Cardiologist in keeping track of the metabolic functions which may L lI'd.; 4
need altering during resuscitation.The -= .' -

Cardiologist's major concern is with the heart itself and he is NURSE...- .. placing.... .. -"CRT". : call.
responsible for determining the type of arrest and making major
decisions in attempting to correct the problem. This involves interpretation r r
of the electrocardiogram, judging signs of proper cir
culation, administering medication and, perhaps the utilization of
"countershock" or defibrillation.If .
the resuscitation attempt is sucessful, the patient is then taken to
the Medical Intensive Care Unit where he will be given physiological
support and his condition stablized as much as possible.
He will require several days of close observation and varying
treatment by medical specialists and skilled nursing personnel beforehe
is allowed to leave the Intensive Care Unit for the wards, and
eventually home.
The training of the "CRT" members is a continuing process and
reveals its results in the many lives that are saved each year
throughout the medical world. '
