The ,Meaning of. July 4thEvery

nation on the face of the globe has its birthday. What, then,

Is so unusual, so markedly different about July 4 that It should merit --qr

such uncommon demonstrations of distinction? _

The explanation lies In the fact that the day not only marks the s a r

birth of a nation but also commemorates the birth of a concept-

the concept that all men are created equal, that a people have the

right to be free and to Install a government of their own choosing,

and that each individual has the right to Hfe, liberty, and the pursuitof

happiness.This .
blueprint for democracy that the Founding Fathers drew up Is

a legacy to a grateful world, not to Americans alone.

But it Is not enough to attain liberty. It must be protected vigI-

lantly, nourished lovingly, maintained unblemished and without

compromise, if it Is to be kept alive for posterity. This basic truth

has been the cornerstone of American policy from the very begin-

of the It Is because of this fundamental belief that

I Drive Defensively Arrive Alive I

Heed road safety rules

Jax-Thousands of motorists will be on the road during
the next three days; everybodying hurrying to get
somewhere as quickly as possible. Very little concern
will be given to arriving back home safely.

With these thoughts in mind, the following excerpts
have been extracted from DRIVER Magazine for the
road safety consideration of everyone contemplatingmotor
vehicle travel this weekend.

Drive defensively, at all times.
One out of every six drivers on the freeways will be
intoxicated even though the alcohol content of their
,blood won't exceed the legal limit. acesy. p} r h
Leave yourself an out in event of emergency. Don't
take chances. There is rarely a case where the extra five
miles per hour you exceed the speed limit or that one car -
you pass will make much difference. There's always a f"i 1 r
stop light to catch you or another slow car ahead of the
one you just passed. -
The other driver is the most dangerous thing on the
highway. He's a "maybe" because you don't know what
he's going to do. The best way to watch out for him is to
keep'your speed reasonable, leave lots of room and
watch on both sides and in the back as well as out front.
Don't be mentally asleep. The most dangerous time in
driving on roads and highways is when you're driving
long distances. Be physically fresh and always aware of

what's, happening around you.
Give your driving your complete attention when COCKPIT OF CATASTROPH Y-"The driver of this vehicle could well be you,if you fail to exercise
