I Putting their lives. : I

-
By Nick Young
The name of the man in,the white shirt on page one of this issue of
"f:,'''.'' -il , tile JAX AIR NEWS is immaterial. lIe's easy' to describe; he's a
,'W ., ,,ff," :_!! ", ,.,.:""\;:"... ,: prisoner in the Union Correctional Institution at Raiford,Fla.,servinga
," .Pry')>o long sentence for armed robbery.
Cdr.Dick Twilde, Officer in Charge of Attack Squadron 203, has no
difficulty describing the sailor pictured with the robber. "Arthur
Floyd is one of our better workers. He has an excellent attitude-is a
hard worker and very capable," Twilde says.
Common Goal \
Yet Airman Apprentice Floyd has much in common with the Raiford
convict. Both men are trying to put their lives back together again
\ after having run afoul of the rules of society. The .
convict is serving his time in Raiford and is a member of

Operation Teenager.
Operation Teenager members travel throughout North Florida
\ sharing their experiences with others in hopes that hearing their
stories will keep others out of prison.
Their Message
Their message is simple: I am where I am because of what I
.P did..and I am responsible for my actions. You are responsible for
your actions and you don't have to wind up where I am.
.P'a In addition to visiting high schools in the area, Operation Teenager
members present programs&i the NAS Correctional Center. They adda
little to their message, talking about"doing time."
In essense they tell young Navymen in the Center that it is much
easier to do "good time"than"bad time."You can follow the rules of
'
the institution and have a much easier time serving your sen-
tence..and,in many instances, receive time off for good behavior.
Message Heard
AA Floyd was a member of their audience last fall and heard the
message. He heard it well.
RESPECTED WORKER--AA Arthur Floyd works diligently on one of the many A.7 Corsair His disciplinary record was lengthy during three years service. It
"black boxes'seeking to prove to himself and his superiors that he's straight now. started with a Captain's Mast for gambling during recruit training. It
continued with several Masts for unauthorized absence and missing
movement. It culminated with conviction. for assault and possessionof
a sawed-off shotgun.
The sentence for the last offenses was a long period of confinementand
a bad conduct discharge. The confinement has been served and he

No, it was a log," says Lt. Mike O'Connell, the Correctional
Officer So, Floyd spent his first two months in confinement Center
"bad time." doing
II
Then he heard the message from the convicts from Raiford. And, he
started thinking about his situation. ,
s, "If I'd used my head, none of those offenses would have happened { jr-gj3 1
( he admits. "And,I could see that I'd end up in jail like the fellows from, .
Raiford when I went out on the street"
\ r So Floyd started listening to counselors at the Correctional Center
with a new attitude. "At first I didn't listen to them he explains.
"Everything" I was doing was right-it had to be right-because: I was
doing it.
Easier Now
"Mainly I have learned to accept things for what they are and not for
what want them to be," he continued. And,he finds it much easier to
get along, following the rules.
AA Floyd has been following the rules for the past nine months. He 4G :
became a model confinee in the Correctional Center and has
developed an excellent reputation at VA-203. He finds he is respected
and he respects others.
Floyd has a cousin who followed him to the Correctional Center with Y f
the same attitude Floyd had during his initial confinement. At the .
request of Lt, O'Connell, Floyd returned to the Center to rap with his 4 %
cousin and another confinee.helped change their attitudes.
Joins Group
So, when Operation Teenager returned to the Center earlier this f
month, Floyd was asked to join the group in talking to the confinees. 4 -4 i
He did,and he enjoyed it. lIe hopes he has helped someone else just as ; t1W.
Operation Teenager helped him.
AA Floyd has a heavy weight on his shoulders-the impending
decision on his Bad Conduct Discharge. He would like to stay in the
Navy.He enjoys it since he changed his attitude towards other people. .
If he gets the BCQ???
"I'll make it,"Floyd says. "I was born to be free.Maybe it's alrightto
cage animals-but, I was born to be .ItPHOTOS
i

RAPPING-Working as a volunteer with"Operation Teenager'AA Arthur Floyd holds an Informalrap
session with a confinee of the Correctional Center, hoping to change his attitude about "doing
