NEWS AIRWINGER PAGE 13 ., .Reviews Problem Areas ' He's a Navy "Super Chief"who once had a goal to visit every unit and station in the Atlantic Fleet. Now, after three years Master Chief Petty Officer of the Atlantic Fleet Gerry P. Gray knows that b i ij' even a"Super Chief"can't accomplish that feat, but he's tried. t 11 Master Chief Gray, a Machinist Mate and 24 year Navy vetran, was in the Jacksonville area last week during one of his regular visits that have taken him from Iceland to Puerto Rico ahd points in between. The object of his visit was fairly simple: he's looking out for the welfare of enlisted men and ,I women. "I want to stay abreast. of the current feelings of our enlisted personnel-their morale and ,1rr well being," he said. At a meeting at the CPO Club, Master Chief Gray was confronted with the usual complaints about ( the selection board process for determining who will be advanced to E-8 and E-9. "I never personnally sat on a selection board," he said, "but I have talked to many of the master chiefs who have and they are unanimous In their, agreement that it is a fair and equitable system." When talking about uniform changes to be instituted July 1, he said the decision to make tropical khaki long strictly a working uniform is not a dead issue. He said he has expressed the displeasurethe decision has caused among the CPO community to Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Jack Whittet, and he expects the regulation to be reconsidered."I . know we are all together in wishing that we could decide on just what uniforms the Navy is goingto wear and stop the constant changes," he said. "I know many senior POs and officers are not correcting uniform discrepancies because they are no longer aware of what the regulations state." Master Chief Gray also told the chiefs he has three sessions with Admiral Cousins discussing the : _-I I.c new club hours instituted throughout the Atlantic Fleet before Admiral Cousins decided on the ; current policy. "Admiral Cousins is concerned about production in the Atlantic Fleet. He wants eight. .c ;; hours work for eight hours pay. While lauding the VPcommunity here for the excellent appearance of their personnel, Gray ex pressed a concern over the general appearance of personnel throughout the Fleet and the standardsof discipline.."There is a concern by most career personnel over the erosion of benefits such as , commissary privileges and medical care for dependents and retirees," Gray said. "But the senior people have got to stop complaining about the Navy to their subordinates, "he continued. While on the subject of benefits, Gray explained that the Navy is backing a new sea pay proposal which would provide compensation particularly for those people who spend long periods at sea. "Most of the complaints come from wives," he explained. Maybe we can cut down on the complaintsif . we can pay the man$100 a month or so for frequent family separations." Gray also mentioned that DoD is backing legislation to alleviate the retired pay inversion problem being experienced with basic pay's failure to keep abreast of inflation. On the subject of retirement, Gray said that Congress was considering DOD's proposed retirement plan and that hearings may be scheduled this year. "WOULD YOU RUN THAT BY ME ONE MORE TIME'?" Seems to t. be the question of Master Chief Petty Officer of the'Atlantic Fleet, Gerry Gray during one of his many scheduled talks here last week. 41 PHOTOS BY : , '- - 0,1; J03 JEANNIE FROSCH, "WHERE THE BROTHERS BUMP WITH THE SISTERS" / O THE HAREMADULT \v ENTERTAINMENT 3C EXOTIC DANCING! it A credit union mobile home loan WELCOMEI!
