Bouquets & LemonsBy

Rich Beck
Jax-It's become a tradition in the journalism
business for departing editors to devote their last

editorial to their impressions of the people and events

they dealt with over the years.

As one ,would expect, the impressions range from
sweet to bitter.
The following "Bouquets and Lemons Awards" are
offered to both individuals and commands that have

influenced the Jax Air News during my three and a-half

years as its editor.

I HS-15 help makes arrested landing on Nimitz' I t m

Jax-A Navy tradition was almost broken last week
when the skipper of HS-15 and the Commander of Attack
Carrier Air Wing Eight pulled a fast one on the CO of the
USS Nimitz.

According to tradition, the first arrested landing on a '
new carrier is made by the carrier's skipper. But Cdr. '
K.R. McCarty, HS-1&CO, and Cdr,E.W.Foote, CAG 8,
beat Nimitz skipper Capt.B.C.Compton to the wire.
Although the landing was a bit unorthodox, it was
quite simple. On their first approach, AWC Lobdell
merely opened the cargo door and lowered a salvaged A- .
4 tail hook on a rope, easily catching the number three
wire.

Unfortunately for the helo crew, Capt. Compton was
watching bolter. from the bridge and declared the "landing"a I

Later that afternoon, Capt. Compton made .the
carrier's first fixed wing arrested landing.The .
Nimitz is scheduled to be commissioned Saturdayand
be ready for full scale operational deployment early

next year. I

TF Crawdad always in season

PANAMA CITY When is a crayfish not a crawdad?
When someone is talking about a Florida or salt water
spiny lobster.
A The confusion over these two creatures has croppedup

T with an announcement closing the season on the
F ) Florida lobster, sometimes called a crayfish.The .
Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission
reminds fishermen there is no closed season 'on the
crawdad or fresh water crayfish and anglers can take as

many as they want, whenever they want, to use as bait. .
i The Florida lobster is 'not a true crayfish. Found

generally in South Florida, the salt water creatureis
much larger than the crawdad or crawfish, with the
minimum harvestable size being a 51 inch tail.
1L____ i* "" The crawfish ranges from 1% to 5 inches when grown
: $ and is found in most Florida fresh waters. It is con-
sidered an excellent bait for panfish and bass and may
be taken from the shallow waters of lakes, creeks, and
\ even drainage ditches. Netting or drags are the usual
trapping techniques.
Crawdad bait is versatile. A smaller whole one may be ..
hooked through the tail for use as live bait by bluegill
fishermen or the soft, white tail may be used as dead
bait.

Large bass are particularly fond of crawfish and a
whole, live one dangling over a bass is a temptation it
.. ..tt can't seem to resist.
Many anglers even feel that a lake's crawdad
