HS-11 skipper makes emergency water landingJaxCdr. I

-.. ........
Melvin E. Taunt, HS-11 skipper, and his
crew were forced to make an emergency water landing
last Wednesday after their SH-3D helicopter developed a
? massive transmission oil loss seven miles from the
fa" aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy.

4 After the crew made a smooth landing, the emergency

flotation gear and sea anchor were deployed. The rotors
and engines had been shut down after the First Air-
crewman spotted smoke coming from the area of the

port engine.
Cdr. Taunt then instructed his two aircrewmen, AWe
Robert T. George and AWAN Robert E. Unangst, and an
Air Force Flight Surgeon, Maj. George K. Anderson to
board the four-man life raft so that an awaiting choppercould

pick them up.
The three aircrewmen were hoisted aboard an HS-li
helo flown by Lt. Jon R. Jensen, Lt(jg) Frank M. Gallic,
and aircrewmen AW3 Robert M.. Davis and AWAN

1R U1 Jayme J. Alfano.
While personnel from the carrier moved closer to

conduct salvage operations, Cdr. Taunt and his co-pilot
Lt. J.B. McGill, readied the helicopter for hoistingaboard

Although the students have passed their final written exams, it is
still possible for them to wash out (no pun Intended) of the program
The final pool exercise is the most demanding obstacle that faces the
SAR students.
Utilizing the NAS poolwhich has been rigged with the fuselage of a
salvaged H-34, the school requires each student to demonstrate his

the water, he must affect a multi-rescue. The student not only
rescues several "survivors," (portrayed by instructors), but must
determine who is to be rescued first.
The rescue procedure involves approaching a panicked and or injured
survivor, disentangling him from his parachute, towing him to
S the rescue sling, putting him in it correctly (!if he isn't !in it correctly,
the survivor can fall out!)and signalling the crew to hoist him into the
helo.
After the student has successfully rescued all of the survivors, he

An interesting sidelight of this pool work is that, in addition to
becoming qualified Navy SAR Wetcrewmen, students will also earn
their Red Cross Senior Lifesaving certificates.
Having successfully completed this round of practical
examinations, the SAR students are flown by helo, to a designated
area in the St.Johns River for the final phase of their practical exams.
The purpose of this phase is to expose the students to the rotor wash

Jax-FLORIDA, The SUNSHINE state, But all too many discover It

the hard way each summer when the beach is filled with half-baked

lobsters that stayed out just a bit too long.

Now the question is, "How do I make it feel better?" Every well-

meaning mother has her old family remedy for sunburn. But what

really works?

The recommended treatment for'simple sunburn is the applicationof

a cool, wet compress.Do not apply ice! A soft cloth, like an old T-

shirt, wet with regular tap water will make a fine wet compress.

Drape over the burned area for about ten minutes every few hours.

Then apply a soothing, non-medicated cold cream to give additional

relief. Do not, however, use a vasoline type ointment, as this will

prevent the skin's normal evaporation and cooling process.

If you must go out in the sunlight again, cover the burned areas with

opaque clothing. Many a sunbather who wears only a T-shirt for

protection is surprised to find out that it's not difficult to burn througha
