bicentennial item should be of special interest to
EARLY AMEBICM military personnel, as it commemorates the 200th an-

Captain James Cook, famous explorer seaman; a sketchof

! An Ode to the Working Man

If By Ltjg)Joe Holland zO
I 118-5 PAO
Jax-The heart of the military beats with the strength of the working man.
Not very glamorous, nor very publicized, the working man seems to be the tR >
Navy's forgotten group.
Pushing a swab, painting an aircraft, turning a wrench, figuring schedules and
managing supplies, filing messages, working a pulley, or fixing food are some of tWE"A
the tasks unobserved by the hard-to-please of the, media.
Books are written to focus on America's deprived, unloved, misled and
. misused, but few are published in memory of the workers.
Let's take the time today to look around and take notice of the many things
brought to us by the working group. r_:
One day a year to celebrate their efforts isn't enough.

Jax. Even though the nights lately have been a little

and two Canadian newsmen was lost in Hurricane
Janet)

Once a storm was located during one of these flights,
information was gathered on its size, wind velocities,
water content and temperature variations. This data
could only be collected by penetrating the storm-flying

through it-often at altitudes between 500 and 1,000 feet.
The prized possention of a VW-4 member is a patch

that indicates he was on a flight that flew through a j tl e ,
hurricane at the 500 foot level with winds of more than '
120 miles per hour.
I
Penetrating the storm wasn't a one time thing either.
At least threehours were spentin the storm's vicinity so
that several penetrations could be made.

Hunting hurricanes may have been what made VW-4

perhaps the Navy's best known squadron, but their job 1 S.
didn't end when the hurricane season was over. S
During the winter they became "Snow. Seekers",
flying off the northern East Coast to give advance
warning on crippling snow storms. In .

addition to storm tracking, VW-4 also flew weather
reconnaissance for Fleet exercises.
Morale in VW-4 was probably about as high as couldbe f.j M.4 Li

dangers of their mission. ZHER

I New Postal Center speeds FPO mail ;1

," bY LOUIS Eberhardt ..II.
Although the Army and Navy have traditionally

had disagreements, they agree completely that the
military. operation at the U.S. Postal Service's new

Bulk and. Foreign! Mail Center in Secaucus, New
Jersey, is providing the best mail service in recent x
memory to Servicemembers abroad and on ships "
at sea.

"The Center put out so much mail so quickly rygA
during Christmas' says Warrant Officer James P.
Roe, "that the airlines had the opportunity to
transport mail overseas faster than ever before."
Roe Is liaison for the Navy's side of the military ..

mail operation that connects 1,073 FPO's, ships and-
bases, located north to Iceland, south to Central ..- a > iwae 4h:5
and South America, and east to Africa and Europe. .

In providing service to ships at sea, tremendous

coordination between the Navy and the Postal > w s.433F kY <.>a.tr >nts
Service Is required to get mail to what is often a
moving target. The goal at the New York Bulk and
Foreign Mail Center is to get mail out of the military
operation of the Foreign Center within 24-hours
after It is received.

Warrant Officer Roe and his Army counterpart, !gym '
Major Dean M. Hogan, agree that the new plant tiy.K
has proved an unqualified success.
"The Bulk and Foreign Mail Center processes '
what it receives on the day it's received, and this

past Christmas, the peak period, there was never
any backlog of mail as there was at the old Postal
Concentration Center at Long Island City," pointsout ,), .
Major Hogan.
Major Hogan's reference is to the old cinder-
I block building that previously housed the military HIT ..
mail sorting operation. That building, "a ninety-day ->"

,. wonder" put up during a three month period in
1944, was intended to handle mail destined for Gis
in Europe and Africa. Despite the fact that it con
tained only 20,000 square feet of space, the building
continued in operation for nearly thirty years.
