'I t1 Jax-The first two Dutch officers to serve In U.S. Naval Aviation
have joined VP-5's Mad Foxes"for a two-year tour
ii LCdrs. Jan Willem Niessink and Pieter A. Kroon joined VP-5 after
r
__ the squadron's return from Sigonella as part of an officer exchange
program between U.S. and allied Navies.
; i' A native of Den Helder,the home of the DutchNavyLCdr. Niessink
I attended elementary and high schools there and entered the Dutch
if ify Maritime College in 1954.Upon graduation in 1956 he served as a shin1!
f rd navigator, becoming fourth, third, and finally second mate In the
merchant marine by 1959. _
Mr.Niessink was drafted into the military service in 1959,attended
the Royal Netherlands Naval Academy for a year to complete
professional courses not covered in the Maritime College,and electedto
a enter naval aviation as a navigator in the Dutch Number Four
Squadron, flying the Grumman S-2 Tracker.
The squadron was based aboard the carrier H.M. Karel Doorman
.nnq+ named after the distinguished Dutch admiral who commanded the
rr2 Netherlands naval forces in the southwest Pacific in World War II.
Mr.Niessink returned in 1960 to the Dutch Naval Academy for more
s x'READY technical training, and soon began pilot training, a syllabus lasting
about a year. In 1962 he was assigned to the Number One Squadron,
also an S-2 outfit, based at Curacao in the Netherlands Antilles,from
where the squadron carried out anti-submarine activities throughoutthe
Caribbean.In .
November of 1966 LCdr.Niessink was assigned to the Dutch Naval
Air Station De Kooy as a test pilot and flight instructor for academy
cadets. His billets in this tour included safety officer and personnel
officer.He .
attended instructor pilots school in 1969 and then went throughthe
combined Dutch Navy and Air Force flight syllabus in preparationfor
a tour as exchange officer with the Dutch Air Force, becoming

operations so that he will have seen most of what American patrol ____
aviation is all about by the time his tour is out. :f
LCdr. Niessink; his wife, Anneke; son, Peter 14and; twin daughters '
Marjolein and Danielle 9, live in Orange Park. Mr. Niessink enjoys "
sailing, gardening, tennis, soccer, and is learning the rules of
American football, which he enjoys watching. \
LCdr. Pieter Kroon, 37, was born and raised in Amsterdam, the 1
nation's largest city, and began his career in much the same way He
entered the Merchant Marine College in 1957, and progressed to third
mate in the merchant marine. In 1961 he joined the naval reserve, and
requested air navigation training. A year later he was a member of
one of the Dutch crews who journeyed halfway around the world to
Burbank, California to take delivery of one of Holland's SP-2H Nep-
tunes. Like Mr. Niessink, Mr. Kroon says that flying any newly-built .
aircraft is a real joy.

LCdr. Kroon came through Jacksonville on his way back home in a
P-2, and recalls soundly defeating some local talent in a drinking
contest that sent the challengers home within an hour. So far no new
American competition has stepped forward.In .
1962 Mr. Kroon chose to take pilot training.After a year's study at
the Royal Netherlands Naval Academy, he passed the necessary r '
examinations to be commissioned in the regular Dutch Navy.

Three years later he began flying the P-2 in 320 Squadron, where he
stayed.until 1970. His billets during this tour included assistant safety
officer,communications officer, electronic warfare officer, instructor
pilot and check pilot.
In 1970 LCdr. Kroon and his family went to Scotland where he took a -
course in photography and public relations with the Royal Navy. :
Returning to Holland he became Officer-in-Charge of the
Photographic Department and Public Relations Officer of ValkenburgNaval
Air Station.In .
1973 he joined Number Two Squadron (equivalent to a U.S. r
"RAG," or replacement training squadron such as VP-30)), where he
was administrative officer and head of pilot training.Mr. .
.Kroon came to VP-301n September of last year to prepare for his
current assignment. He is presently in the operations department, and
