J "VP-62 is the best VP Squadron in the Naval

Reserve Force", Deputy Chief of Naval Reserve for Air
RAdm, Thomas B. Russell said as he presented the Noel 1
Davis trophy to Cdr. JamesJE. Durr, VP-62 skipper.

Commodore William H. Saunders,HI, Commodore of
Reserve Patrol Wings Atlantic Fleet, prefaced the
admiral's remarks by citing the squadron's "unparalled
achievement and professional excellence.

VP-62 boasts 13 Alpha crews and, according to
Commodore Saunders, "the highest VP readiness in the
Reserve community.

Following the VP-62 presentation, RAdm. Russell
presented the Noel Davis trophy to Capt. Peter L. Streit,
commanding officer of RSAND F-l, for his unit's out-

standing systems analysis to the regular Navy com-
mands in the greater Jacksonville area during the past

year.
RAdm. Russell regretted that RSAND F-l has

been disestablished due to austere funding.The J t. j
presentations ended a week long' Administrative
Material Inspection of the Jax Naval Air Reserve Unit .
and its tenant commands at CVWR-20, VA-203 and VP-

62.A
team of 40 inspectors, officers, chiefs and civilians,
headed by Capt. James McCardell, Jr., Chief Inspector,
took an' in-depth look at each unit, department and
division.

The inspection was a success for,the Jax.Reservists,
with all 'squadrons and units receiving satisfactory

grades, and minor discrepancies duly noted.
Pleased with the inspection, RAdm, Russell stressedthe

Combine dry ingredients and sift together. Beat eggs, add milk and '

melted fat. Stir into flour mixture to lightly blend. Cook on greased
griddle, until lightly browned on each side.
This recipe is sufficient for 4 to 6 servings.
Larger quantities may be prepared by multiplying the ingredients,
smaller quantities by reducing the ingredients. The dry mixture may
be prepared in larger quantities and the liquids added as used.
Substitute orange juice for the milk for orange pancakes and add
fresh, frozen, or canned fruit for blueberry or strawberry pancakes. Syd S'r.

ASCENSION ISLAND-Space buffs will be Interested in two new
stamp items of this south Atlantic Ocean part of the St.Helena colony.
The two pence item shows a photo of the island taken from the Skylab 3
spacecraft with an inset of the craft.The 18 pence stamp has a photo of
the Island taken from Skylab 4 with an inset of the Command Module.
MAURITIUS-This Indian Ocean island is circulating four new
commemoratives with paintings portraying local life in the 19th
century: "Cottage We" ((15 cents)by F.Leroy; "The Milk Seller" ((60
cents) by A.Richard; "Entrance of Port Louis Market" ((1 Rupee) by

vessel "Joyita" and its reappearance after disappearing are

day passage between Samoa and Tokelau in October 1955.The 70 ton
vessel, carrying 25 passenger; and crewmen, failed to arrive. A sea
and air search of more than 100,000 square miles revealed nothing.The .

but not a trace of a passenger or crewman was found.What happened?

h 4.F at Key West, Florida. The squadron was moved from Key West to

Naval Air Station, Quonset Point, Rhode Island in 1970. The move from
i Quonset Point to Naval Air Station Jacksonville'was complete

privileged when we were told that our spaces were to be refurbished

under a major construction contract. Soon after the remodeling

began, however, it became quite evident that work and rennovation
weren't mixing. So, in May of 1974, HS-1 moved from Hangar 12410
Building 200 and Hangar 116.We soon found that this geographic split

Y V& tested the morale and cohesiveness of the squadron. But we coped
: thinking of how nice the new hangar would be. IOn

March 10, the squadron moved back Into Hangar 124. Many
Lyra squadron members donated their private vehicles to move govern.

power completed the actual move. .

flurry of activity. Squadron personnel quickly swept the plaster dust

away, painted the blotchy bulkheads, laid floor tile, paneled walls and
dropped ceilings all items which were NOT completed during the
rehabilitation.Squadron pilots and line crew continue to struggle with

torn up taxiways and only a "heads up"attitude has averted tragedy

1 Jax-He calls himself a "red neck hippie".
it Everyone else calls him "The Hangman".
\ lie travels around the country in a motor home filled with the toolsof
his trade. But he doesn't carry a gallows,. rope and blindfold. Just
plenty of paint and brushes.An .
Ex-Navy Radioman and Quartermaster who served four years
r aboard ships operating out of Mayport, Jim Ballagh spends his life
"just going where I feel like going", painting delicate multi-colored
scrollwork on cars, trucks, boats, planes and "anything else that
doesn't move too fast for a brush."
\.. In less than ten minutes(and with a single brush stroke)he can painta
mountain range,or just about anything else the owner wants, in 28
i, n colors.
(, The Hangman's been leading the life of a nomad for about 16 years.It .
all started when he was in junior college"majoring in the GI Bill"
n and met a former Detroit "pin striper" named Ed Burke who taught
.i. 1; him the Japanese art of sumei scrolling. (painting with two or more
\. colors on the same brush).

After a little practice,the Hangman took on his first job for$5.
With the job finished, Burke took his protege to a "second rate

didn't get much out of the movie,"Ballagh laughed, "But I did get
\ my nickname off the marquee." -

The Hangman took to the road and eventually wound up in a tiny
California town as the town's only school teacher,His wife was the

After battling the local school board for innovative steps,,they endedup
with recognition as one of the top ten small schools in the state."We'd .
proved our point", Ballagh says, so the couple hit the road
again.

Since winning contracts from Chrysler Corp. and Volkswagen, he's
traveled to dealerships in 43 states, painting some 50,000 "units" and
teaching his formula to anyone who wants to follow his trail for a few I .
