i! 'Mad Foxes' back home from Sigonella I



Jax-VP-5's "Mad Foxes" returned here yesterday after an extended five and

one-half month deployment to NAF Sigonella, Sicily.
During their most successful deployment in recent years, the "Mad Foxes" set

several records for patrol squadrons on Mediterranean deployment.VP5 .
left NAS in September with all 12 crews carrying "Alpha" readiness

status and soon began compiling an unprecedented number of Soviet submarine

detections. "."

Working with Italian, French and British forces, VP-5 participated in several
significant fleet exercises and coordinated operations to check the growing

presence of Soviet naval forces in the Mediterranean.

Reporting to the Commander of Mediterranean ASW Forces, the "Mad Foxes"

were a prime source of vital information on day and night Soviet ship and sub-

marine movements in the Middle East and neighboring waters.

VP-5 set another record Jan. 12 when the squadron completed 13 years withouta

major aircraft accident. Seventeen days later, they marked 110,000 accident-

free flight hours. continuing their leadership of East Coast operational patrol

squadrons in the field of flight safety.

After a 30-day stand-down, VP-5 will resume operations with P A TWING 11.

The "Mad Foxes" are led by Cdr. Harold L. Midtvedt, who became the

squadron's skipper during their deployment. Cdr. Alvin C. Gross, Jr. is VP-5's

new Executive Officer.Movie .

on-the-job training. K!< "J '
After joining the "Dragons" last February, AT2 Jack
Weber'was sent TAD to AIMD to repair Tacans. Whenhe t a
deployed with the squadron and was assigned TAD to
NAF Sigonella's AIMD fixing Tacans, he was
dissatisfied with his job and decided to do something'about '
it.

"I had a hidden ambition to be a flight tech," Petty A+I''
Officer Weber says. His ambition led him to checkingout I ir4.er-

a flight suit and off-duty flying.

His desire to fly raised the interest of"Dragon" flight
techs ATI Larry Seaman and AX1' Joseph Markowski.AT2 .
Weber launched his flying career by flying with
these two men during his off-duty hours and when he
could get time off.
With the help of the flight techs,AT2 Weber assembleda
working knowledge of the P-3C avionics systems.

"The men of Crew Nine (ATI Seaman's crew) and ? _
Crew 12 (AXl Markowski's crew) were most
cooperative in helping me learn the individual P-3C
systems" Weber said. With AT2 Weber's efforts and
rigorous training by Petty Officers Seaman and,
Markowski, Petty Officer Weber successfully 'com-
pleted the NATOPS open and closed book examinations.When DOING WHAT HE LIKES BEST, AT2 Jack Weber tends to his duties as a VP-54 In-Flight
the "Dragons" returned from Sigonella, AT2 Technician.

willing to spend them performing some worthwhile service to help

If so, and you are a military wife, you have the necessary ..

r qualifications for membership in the Personal Services Volunteer I '
Organization. \
No specialized skills are required. Just a few minutes of training
prepares you to begin.
The Personal Services Volunteer Organization is designed to
alleviate the hardships inherent to the military way of life by '.
providing a source of information, advice and assistance.
Members may serve in a variety of ways. Beginners may serve on .
iLffiY any of four committees: office staff, welcoming, emergency
assistance, or lending closet repairs.
After a few weeks of service, members who are interested and
willing to give at least four hours per week are eligible to hold one of
the organization's 'chairs: Correspondence, Files and Records, '.
Hospitality, Information and Referral, Lending Closet, Office Ad.
ministration, Publicity, Special Assistance, or Welcoming.Office .
4N Staff members will serve as receptionists at the Center and
perform routine tasks necessary to the Center's operation, such as .
filing, assembling hand-out literature and issuing lending closet "
articles.
Typing skill is not required for office staff membership, but those
who have this skill will have the opportunity to employ it.
Welcoming Committee members will visit newly arrived families, .
present them with area information packets and answer routine '
questions about the area _
The Lending Closet Repair 'Committee's primary duty will be J'
sewing, such as, mending or making cloth seats for baby strollers, ,
W tht SR mending sheets, blankets and mattresses.
The Emergency Assistance Committee will provide babysitting, 1 I
shopping and transportation services in times of emergency. I
Members may serve on any or all committees, if they so choose. \
They may give as little or as much time as they desire. '

WASHINGTON, D.C. Another Bicentennial item will be issued
here April 10: a ten cent commemorative of the battles of Lexingtonand
Concord,Mass.These battles took place on that date in 1775. _I II lrl a {

First day of issue ceremonies will be held in both cities, with
separate cancellations for each place. Requests should be addressedto
"Lexington & Concord Stamp"" in care of the postmaster at
Lexington (02173)) or Concord (01742)). Ten cents per stamp to be
cancelled should be enclosed and orders must be postmarked not later
than April 19.

The Lexington-Concord stamp is based upon a painting by Henry wxE.
Sandman, an artist of the period. The painting is titled "Birth of
Liberty" and was also on a 1925 U.S. two-cent stamp Issued for the
150th anniversary of the battles. The painting( depicts Lexington
Common, where the first skirmish of the Revolutionary War took '

place. ( .

Issue dates,of two multiple stamp sets of special note have not yet
been announced by the U.S. Postal Service.

them to find many of the European works of,art which

dard patterns of decorating, the .Bernsteins' personal
tastes dominate the decor of their home.

while they were stationed in Italy.

After the visit to the Bernsteins' lovely home, I was
thoroughly convinced that the Navy has provided more
than a profession for the Bernsteins. Through their
overseas tours, the Bernsteins have received an A NAUTICAL, CORNER of the family room consists of sailing ships, ,a heavy ornate desk and, In

have just such a recipe that has been flagged for several weeks. L' .-
Last week we had the opportunity to put it to the test'and it is delicious.
It is one of those recipes that is put together from scratch so those : ;
readers who avoid this type of recipe should read no further. For those ; : tTJ2LP
purists who spend their, time in the kitchen preparing culinary
masterpieces, this is your recipe. -

Coconut Pudding
1 medium size fresh coconut ,
large can evaporated milk
1V4 cups granulated sugar 3 eggs

Vi cup butter or oleo_ 2 cups liquid (coconut juice ..
2 tablespoons corn starch ]
and water) .
Vanilla wafers
1 teaspoon vanilla

Drain coconut, set juice aside. Grate fresh coconut. Combine sugar,
corn starch and mix well. Separate the eggs and add egg yolks, milk,
water, and coconut juice to sugar mixture. Cook over medium'heat
until thickened. Add butter and vanilla. Line the bottom of a large
baking dish with vanilla wafers, then add a layer,of coconut, spread
half the cooked filling and repeat wafers,coconut and filling.
Beat egg whites, add 6 teaspoons sugar for meringue. Spread over
top and brown in 350 degree oven.Serves 12.UOWUnWHCOMt.
