stern of the Sixth Fleet flagship USS Little Rock for the past 30 months.
.' l "!' Little Rock is one of two remaining World War II era gun cruisers. The USS
Oklahoma City, flagship of the U.S. Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific, is the
other. Although neither ship was originally designed to accomodate a helicopter,
'a landing platform was added to the Little Rock in 1959 during her conversionfrom

an all-gun cruiser to a guided missle ship.

.Cruiser StyleContinued

( from page 4))

Operating an HH-2D chopper from a cruiser's stern in all types weather, dayor
night, presented unique challenges to the pilots and crew.
High velocity winds curling around the big cruiser's superstructure created a I I
whirlwind effect on the helo platform. A slight error in judgement by the pilot or I
one of the crewmen could have resulted in disaster and death. But the men of
Detachment 31 successfully met all challenges and amassed an accident-free
record.
Though their primary mission was to airlift the fleet commander to his far-
flung units afloat and ashore, the detachment has been repeatedly called upon to
provide rescue assistance and carry mail and personnel to fleet units during
crisis situations.
After a flood two year ago, their H-2 helicopter rescued several hundred
Tunisians from rooftops and airlifted blankets and medicines to those in need. ..
Sparkling clean when it left the cruiser, the chopper was muddied and dirty whenit y 'tf e r
returned several days later. This was mostly_ due to the helicopter's final
mission in Tunisia which called for them to airlift 260 sheep to a place of safety,
The sheep left their mark.
On other occasions, the H-2 has borne the Chiefs of Naval Operations for Italy .
and the Netherlands, several U.S. ambassadors assigned to countries borderingthe IJ
Mediterranean, State and Defense Department officials, and three different
/ Sixth Fleet commanders.
"Working for the Fleet Command meant we had to be ready to do anything,
usually with little or no advance warning," says Lt. Larry Poh, the Detach- f
ment's former Officer in Charge. "It certainly was a fast-paced job and I enjoyed S
; it thoroughly." g
: From 1959 to 1972, helicopter service to the Sixth Fleet commander was limitedto
rotating units. In an effort to provide continuity in maintenance and ad-
ministration, Det 31 was assigned to the Fleet Commander on a nonrotationalbasis
three years ago.
This small aviation organization quickly and easily blended into the LittleRock's THE HELO IN HOMEPORT-The helo Is located near the stern of
the Little Rock during a stopover at the Little Rock's homeport in
established "blackshoe" organization and the two groups operated as Gaeta, Italy.

one.Lt..Poh was assisted by Lt. Thomas Dean, Lt(jg) Michael Connelly, and seven

: of the H2's engines three times in ten days.
j The detachment's unique experiences weren't limited to duty hours,
Homeporting overseas, especially married personnel, also offered unusual
experiences. ; . ,
NEW ,
Living in a foreign country can be both exciting and, on occasion, unnerving, I
according to one airman's wife.
Another airman's wife commented, ,"The cultural and language differenceswere BEN Ei:1'.1: i
very evident when we arrived in 1972. But once my husband and I had a ,
chance to learn the language and a little bit about the customs and habits of the
; people, it became a truly ,enjoyable experience, for our.entire family. My two
little sons will never forget their experiences in Italy and neither will their I.
parents."

To the Officer and ." I
Enlisted Men of VP 301

I with to extend this personal welcome to you ai new citizens
of one of the most progressive communities in America. Jack-
sonville has long had the reputation of being a great "Navy
Town," and I want you to become a part of this growing city.

AIR STATIONJACKSONVILLE
The good relationship between the U.S. Navy and Jacksonvilledates .
.
back to pre-World War II days. Today, thorn are more FLORIDA till ,
than 30,000 active duty Navy personnel at our three Installa "" :
tions. Add to this their dependents, the civilian employeesand I" .mlt amp to.J .
the retired navy personnel living here, and you have over' Y
130,000 of Jacksonville's 600,000 population, all contributingto
the $300 ..UUon'ioing into the city's economy each year. March 6, 1975 't

Jacksonville is not known as the "Bold New City of the South"
for nothing. Under a consolidated city-county government we
have made great strides in building a sound economy, eliminating Velcoew to the Naval Air Station, -
urban blight and the air and water pollution which plagues Jacksonville fully|
many metropolitan areas, and in restoring public confidenceand
pride in their city. We have teen looking forward to the arrival of VP-30 for
quite some time and know that you will be pleased with
I hope our citizens will help make the transition into a new your move to Jacklonvl1le. The motto of the Naval Alp Station
environment as easy and as pleasant possible for you and your II "We Serve the Fle.t", and w. are Proud to otter our
family. You are now "one' of uSine.v services to you.

which jrou will share with the other patrol
squadrons here, II modern aM was specifically designed for
R patrol aircraft. I am sure you will find both facilities Ideally
May : suited for the support of Patrol Squadron Thirty.

Our" relationship With the city of Jacksonville rivals the relationship -
Vj ot any military base with a civilian coma mity, and
you and your families
will find a most warm welcome from the
people ot the Bold New cltr.

Prom the officers, men, women, and civilian employees of the
Naval Air Station, I offer a most hearty Welcome Aboard.
