High velocity winds curling around the big cruiser's superstructure created a I I whirlwind effect on the helo platform. A slight error in judgement by the pilot or I one of the crewmen could have resulted in disaster and death. But the men of Detachment 31 successfully met all challenges and amassed an accident-free record. Though their primary mission was to airlift the fleet commander to his far- flung units afloat and ashore, the detachment has been repeatedly called upon to provide rescue assistance and carry mail and personnel to fleet units during crisis situations. After a flood two year ago, their H-2 helicopter rescued several hundred Tunisians from rooftops and airlifted blankets and medicines to those in need. .. Sparkling clean when it left the cruiser, the chopper was muddied and dirty whenit y 'tf e r returned several days later. This was mostly_ due to the helicopter's final mission in Tunisia which called for them to airlift 260 sheep to a place of safety, The sheep left their mark. On other occasions, the H-2 has borne the Chiefs of Naval Operations for Italy . and the Netherlands, several U.S. ambassadors assigned to countries borderingthe IJ Mediterranean, State and Defense Department officials, and three different / Sixth Fleet commanders. "Working for the Fleet Command meant we had to be ready to do anything, usually with little or no advance warning," says Lt. Larry Poh, the Detach- f ment's former Officer in Charge. "It certainly was a fast-paced job and I enjoyed S ; it thoroughly." g : From 1959 to 1972, helicopter service to the Sixth Fleet commander was limitedto rotating units. In an effort to provide continuity in maintenance and ad- ministration, Det 31 was assigned to the Fleet Commander on a nonrotationalbasis three years ago. Another airman's wife commented, ,"The cultural and language differenceswere BEN Ei:1'.1: i very evident when we arrived in 1972. But once my husband and I had a , chance to learn the language and a little bit about the customs and habits of the ; people, it became a truly ,enjoyable experience, for our.entire family.
