Admiral Howard E.Greer became the new Commander of the
Atlantic Fleet Naval Air Force (COMNAVAIRLANT) Friday when he
relieved Vice Admiral Frederick H.Michaelis during a ceremony held
aboard the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy.The .
principal speaker at the ceremony was Admiral Ralph W.
Cousins, Commander-in Chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. In his remarks,
Admiral Cousins emphasized the requirement for a strong Navy and
the importance of the aircraft carrier to the Navy's mission of
maintaining freedom of the seas. He offered high praise for the
leadership VAdm.Michaelis has provided the Force for the past three
years. He also cited the safety record established by the Forehand;,
congratulated VAdm.Michaelis on the increased state of readiness of
the aircraft carriers and squadrons In the Atlantic Fleet.

I February 29,1972,has orders assigning him as Chief of Naval Materialin

RAdm. Charles S. Williams,Jr., Commander of Sixth Fleet ASW Forces.
RAdm. Williams praised the squadron's record under Cdr. Weir, citing the '" I IfI'

record number of submarine detections, the extraordinary high crew readiness ) j/>
((12 Alfa-statuscrewsand) VP-5's impressive safety record ((110,000 accident-free fI' '
flight hours in more than 13 years). r. {{
Cdr. Weir summarized his year with the "Mad Foxes" as one of "great I Irl
achievements". Beginning with completion of the squadron's transition to the P-
3C a year ago, Cdr. Weir recounted the exercises and detachments to Bermudaand
Guantanamo Bay that gave VP-5 its first operational experience with the
computerized Orion, and the months of training in tactics, safety and operational
procedures that prepared the"Mad Foxes" for their current deployment.Cdr. .
Weir will be assigned to the staff of Commander, Patrol Wings, Atlantic
Fleet at Brunswick, Maine. .,
Guests at the change of command ceremony included the commanding officersof
Italian Navy and Air Force squadrons based in Sicily and the skipper of the
Royal Air Force 203 Maritime Squadron from Malta. *

The Commanding Officers of VP-44, deployed to Rota, Spain, and Lajes,
Azores, and Fleet Tactical Support Squadron 24 of Naples, Italy and Rota also
attended.

The Hospital Volunteers here have a volunteer force
of over 1800 active members. Trained by the Red Cross i;
and hospital staff, the volunteers work at many tasks, I.
serving as receptionists, personal services ward work, i
stand-by in the clinics, recreation and creative ac- .' ,)0I -.
tivities, special courses and much more. "
Volunteers serve when they'have the time, whether .
it's one day per month or an hour per week.
The next Red Cross Volunteer class will begin March
