N Jax-If someone were to ask i if, you've ever used the Centrex here at NAS

Jacksonville and you replied 'No', chances would be that you don't know what
s; JMI Centrex Is.Centrex .

(Centralized Group Service) is the maze of wires and machinery

located in Building 1 which makes it possible to dial a phone call to nearly

anywhere from this station without the assistance of an operator. Prior to last

November, which marked the end of a three-and-a-half-year installation period,

a staff of 14 operators manned the NAS switchboards 24 hours a day, seven daysa

week. Today with Centrexonly four operators are needed, and when 4:30

= arrivesthey merely flip a switch and head for home, knowing that if anyone
.
rr.f s needs telephone assistance the computers will do the job.
r a. According to Telephone Branch Manager, James B. Vaughn, Centrex is

equipped to handle 2,000 lines, 1,900 of which are presently being used. Includedin
this system are 72 'trunk lines' for off-station calls and 64 lines for incomingcalls.

.
The only problem with Centrex, Vaughn states, is that many persons still don't

understand how to use it, especially the Autovon system. Chief Operator Edith

Brooks, who has worked at the NAS Telephone Branch for 29 years, says
everyone should be aware that Autovan functions on a 'first-come first-serve'

basis, and that a high priority call may cut a less urgent conversation when the f

situation deems it necessary to do so. She said that a call can be cut off anywherein

the Autovon system-in Jacksonville, in another city even in another state. She
