If you feel like traveling a short distance, there is a lot to see and do. You can start your journey with a step back in time to a yesteryear, more primitive Florida. Come to Stephen Foster Folk Cultural Center State Park on Saturday, Feb 4th, 2012 for an introduction to early pioneer arts and crafts. Hear the crack of a bull whip and meet its maker. Listen to haunting melodies played on a handcrafted flute. Learn to charm the birds out of the trees using your very own bird call whistle. See the brawny blacksmiths working at the fiery forge. There, you can also meet a Galiceno horse herd. These hardy equines are descendants of the horses introduced to North America by the Spanish Conquistador explorers. They are the stock from which sprang the mustangs and the Cracker horses. Watch as a master wood carver and whittler plys his trade. See pottery fired in a pit. Clay pots will be wrapped in organic materials such as hay, leaves, grasses, and moss and fired in open flames. Watch as talented spinners, weavers, knitters, crocheting and quilters create their wares before your eyes. The demonstrators will happily answer your questions and sell their goods. School groups are welcome. The event will take place in the Craft Square and will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. For more information, call 386397-1920 Also taking place at the park this Saturday, will be a Coffee House performance hosted by Mary Z. Cox in the park auditorium on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 at 7P.M. Mary Z. Cox is an award winning vocalist along with her accomplishments on the banjo and dulcimer. She writes, teaches and lives music at home in Tallahassee. Her down home original vocals and upbeat instrumental work will bring you into the music. She performs all around the world and is often seen here at the Florida Folk Festival. As I have mentioned to you in past columns, the Stephen Foster Coffee House event invites visitors onstage for 10 minutes to sing, play a musical instrument, read some original poetry or tell a story. Artists are requested to arrive at least 10 minutes early for sign up and perform material suitable for all ages. Coffee house is an extremely popular event held in the Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park and with no admission fee; seating tends to fill up quickly. And, as if they did not already have enough going on this Saturday, the Foster Park will also host a special pottery workshop Pit firing of Saggar MummiesŽ presented by Diane Hornby, Alyson Dal Ponte and Sheryl Huseonica, Saturday February 4, 2012 in the Craft Square. This special workshop involves learning the primitive technique of wrapping pre-bisqued pieces in organic, combustible materials, wire and colorants, including iron sulfate and copper sulfate soaked hay, salt and copper carbonate salt mixture. Then the entire piece is wrapped in a large piece of newspaper and tied with string. Once this process is complete, the mummy is ready to put into the pit. After all the mummies are placed into the barrel, the fire is lit and voila! Let the magic begin! With registration each participant will be given a pre-bisqued pot and then will wrap the piece as they wish after each technique is demonstrated. Guidance from the pottery demonstrators will be available throughout. Aprons and gloves will be available. Demonstration, pot selection and wrapping will begin at 2 p.m. The firing will begin around 5 p.m. and each participant should plan on staying for at least part of the firing process to complete their experience in this unique method of preparation and firing. The following morning all the pieces will be removed from the ashes, cleaned, waxed and will be ready for pick up. There will be several special guest lectures beginning around10am. These lectures/presentations will be free and open to the public regardless of whether they are participants in the workshop. One of our special guest lecturers will be Susan Hunter of C and R Products. Susan will share her expertise as a ceramic specialist at 1 p.m. Saturday February 4, before the class begins. For more information about Susan and her offerings, please see her website candrceramics.com. Also, Darrell Adams is tentatively on schedule to discuss his high fire techniques using salt and other glaze preparations in a large wood-fire kiln. His works and information may be viewed at DarrellAdamsPottery.com. Participants are limited to 20 adults (at least 18 years of age). Pre-registration is required but if there are extra pots, walk-ins will be welcome. The price of the workshop is$20 per piece with a limit of 1 piece per student. The class will be held in front of the pottery cabin in Craft Square. For more information on the lecture and workshop or to register, please call the park Gift Shop at (386) 397-1920 If you have news of events or happenings you wish to share in this column, I would love to hear from you and, as always, I hope to see you out and about, enjoying life in White Springs. Carolyn Bass is home from back surgery, recovering nicely, not back at the store yet, of course. Jean Eatmon is in the hospitalhaving some tests, doing well. Tommy Daniels is home also. We understand that Mary Lou Bullard had knee surgery and is home now also. If anyone has news of family or loved ones that you would like to share, let us know. We are thankful to have Jo Coe back in Jasper. Gerry Lewis and Margaret are now Great Grandparents (making Virginia MacFarlane Great Great Grandmother, we will have all the info next week. It is my understanding that they are doing more "good things" at SVNC, if you get a chance try to check on it, already looking good, we are fortunate to have a place where loved ones can get the care they need, I thought I knew of the care, but until I stayed there for nine months, did not realize the efforts they make, there are some of the best care-givers there. Glad Johnny Bullard is back on board, I enjoy his writings about the area. Suwannee Valley Haven Hospice has a lot to celebrate. The organization has been serving the community for 25 years, and the Haven Hospice Suwannee Valley Care Center has been open for five years. Both significant events will be recognized with a birthday party at the care center in Lake City on Saturday, Feb. 4 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. All ages are welcome to attend the event, which will feature bounce houses, balloons, cotton candy, hot dogs and much more, as Haven Hospice thanks the Suwannee Valley community for 25 years of partnership and support. The Suwannee Valley Haven Hospice facilities include a care center, administrative offices and a community room, which is a large room that is available for free use to anyone in the community. Polly Tyler, the administrator for the Haven Suwannee Valley Care Center, said the birthday party is all about getting together with their biggest supporters, the community residents. We think the best way to celebrate is alongside the community that has so graciously welcomed us,Ž Tyler said, and the best way to do it is to invite all the children for a birthday party.Ž Tyler said the 16-bed care center is a place where Haven can provide with short-term inpatient care when they require pain and symptom management. The care center is also able to provide respite care to families and caregivers who need a break from the many demands of being a caregiver. It is the people throughout this beautiful area who have helped us become what we are today, and we want to thank and invite them to come celebrate,Ž Tyler said. Haven Hospice is certainly not new to Suwannee Valley community, Haven began service in the community as a volunteer project, and today they serve a number of patients in their homes and also at the facility in Lake City. It is a community service we provide and it is the community that has embraced us,Ž Tyler said.
