Bus crash in Gadsden

of torching Driver and

landlord's

trailer
BY DEBORAH BUCKHALTER
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
A Sneads handyman is accused
of arson after allegedly setting a
fire at the dwelling of his elderly
landlady and employer.
Sneads Police Chief Burt
McAlpin said Thomas Randal
Patrick, 57, was arrested after the
incident last Thursday.
Damage to the trailer was
minor, McAlpin said, because the
resident was at home and called
authorities when she first realized
there was a fire.
According to McAlpin, Patrick
lived at 7667 Pope St. in a trailer
situated near, and owned by, the
victim. McAlpin said the woman
was letting Patrick live in the
other trailer in exchange for yard
work and other chores he. did for
her.
McAlpin said it appears Patrick
had threatened to burn the vic-
tim's trailer earlier in the day,
because he was afraid she was
going to evict him.
,Patrick suspected that the vic-
tim's 85-year-old female 'room-
mate might be moving in to the,
trailer he was living in, McAlpin
said:
The victim had called McAlpin
to report Patrick had been crawl-
ing under her dwelling in an
apparent attempt to eavesdrop on
her conversations.
Later in the day, she called to
report her trailer was on fire.
"(Patrick) was under the influ-
ence of alcohol, and he'd crawled
under her trailer, set a block of
wood on fire, and put it up against
the (trailer)," McAlpin said.
"He'd made a threat earlier that
he'd see it burnt down."
McAlpin said Patrick claimed
-he'd dropped a cigarette under
the trailer and that the fire was
not intentional. McAlpin, howev-
er, said no discarded cigarette
was found that could have
explained the fire.

students injured
BY DEBORAH BUCKHALTER '
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
CHATTAHOOCHEE One student was
partially ejected as a fully loaded Gadsden
County school bus plowed into the woods and
crashed off County Road 269A near
Chattahoochee Monday.
The driver and one other student were also
critically injured. They and almost a dozen
others were hospitalized, with two going to,
Jackson Hospital and the others taken to
Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.
Authorities say none of the injuries
appeared life-threatening. Florida Highway
Patrol Lt., Ken Ellis said it was not known
what caused the driver to veer of the road;
The accident occurred as the bus was heading
north into Chattahoochee after 2 p.m. Central
time.
Lt. Ellis said the accident was likely due to
the driver suffering a "health incident," or dis-
traction.
There were 41 students aboard the bus as it
travelled from West Gadsden High School in
Greensboro. Some students were able to
break out windows and help others to safety
after the bus crashed and struck a tree.
Several students were trapped for a time in
the front and central sections of the bus.
One' student was pinned under the driver,
and had to be removed with the "jaws of life."
Emergency and health care professionals
mounted an all-out rescue effort, including
Jackson County Fire Rescue.

Emergency personnel poured into Calhoun County Monday to assist with rescue efforts in
this school bus accident near the city limits of Chattahoochee. Mark Skinner / Floridan
Nurses were summoned from Apalachee up on the grounds of Florida State Hospital in
Correctional Institution in Sneads to help sort Chattahoochee. The name of the driver was
out the injured at a makeshift triage center set not released as of press time.

Cops still

looking for

burglar
BY DEBORAH BUCKHALTER
FlRIOIDAN STAFF WRIIFR
Sneads law enforcement'is try-
ing to find out who broke into a
store there and stole $4,000 worth
of cigarettes last week.
Sneads -Police Chief Burt
McAlpin said someone broke the
front glass door of the' Lake
Seminole Shell Station in Sneads,
formerly the Petro station, around
12:48 a.m. last Wednesday.
Four cases of Marlboroughs
and 305 cigarettes were taken
from behind the counter,
McAlpin said.
Police are on the lookout for a
car of interest in the case.
McAlpin believes that a small,
white BMW box-style car with
non-standard, high-end rims -may
have been involved' A car of that
description was seen across from
the Shell station at another con-
venience store off U.S. Highway
90 around the time of the theft.
Authorities suspect' the four-
door car and its occupant may be
connected to the theft, with
another individual possibly act-
ing as a lookout for the burglar
and providing the getaway car.
Anyone with information in the
case is asked to call Sneads police
at 593-6403.

FCAT exams begin

BY DEBORAH BUCKHALTER
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
FCAT exams begin today in Jackson County
schools.
Taking the state tests are students in grades
three through 11, as well as any high school sen-
iors who either haven't taken the test yet, or who
haven't passed on previous tries. The tests will
take place over the next eight school days.
Third graders have the most at, stake they
have to pass the reading section in order to be
promoted, unless they go to summer reading
camp and pass an alternative test.
Summer reading camp offers the Stanford 10
test after the session winds up. Passing that exam
would let students advance to fourth grade along
with their classmates, if the FCAT reading score
was the only thing standing in the way.
FCAT days are not completely driven by test-
ing.
As an example of how the tests are staggered,
third graders will take one reading section today,
a 60-minute test.
The next day, they'll take the second and final
reading test, another 60 minute exam.
"On the third day, they'll take two 60-minute
math sessions.
The fourth day will be make-up for all grade
levels, where students who missed taking their
Tuesday through Thursday tests because they
were absent or unable to sit for the exam.
Monday is also a make-up day.
Jackson County Superintendent of Schools
Lee Miller said students and teachers in all
grades have been working hard to prepare for the

tests, and that he has confidence in their ability to
succeed.
For the past month, students have been taking
practice tests and learning test-taking techniques.
All year long, they've been learning Sunshine
State standards, the areas which are tested in the
FCAT.
They've had writing, math, reading and sci-
ence consultants on campuses this year at all the
schools, trying to help students hone the. skills
they need for the tests.
Teachers put together a Power Point presenta-
tion of FCAT tips, information that is available to
parents so they can help students at home.
Elementary students aren't the only ones
who'll have to buckle down for the tests.
Jackson County's Director of Student
Services, Shirl Williams, said Monday that 227
of 925 juniors and seniors in the county system
still haven't finished all of their FCAT require-
ments. She said that, compared to other school
systems in Florida, it's not uncommon for rough-
ly 25 percent of juniors and seniors to still be
lacking the scores they need.
Fifth, eighth and 11 th graders are the only ones
who take a science test, but everybody gets read-
ing and math.
Students will have other opportunities if they
don't get it clone this time around, with re-takes
possible during the next round of FCAT testing
this fall.
Tenth graders, for instance, will have four
more opportunities to pass the standards in their
junior and senior years.

Students take a look at composting

SPECIAL TO THE FLORIDAN
The Chipola Home Educators 4-H
Eureka Science Club held its monthly
meeting on March 4, at the Jackson
County Extension Office.
The meeting was called to order by
Michael Young, while Mason Young
called the roll and Jacob Hayes led the
Pledge ofAllegiance.
Their unit of study on recycling contin-
ued, with parent Chris Smith leading the
presentation and discussion time.
The topic of the meeting was vermicom-
posting, or worm composting, which
demonstrates the natural process of
decomposition and the use of worms as a
positive alternative to disposing of
garbage.
Students learned that a worm bin can be
made using a large plastic container, with
holes drilled in the top, bottom, and sides.
Bedding 'materials can include shredded
moist newspaper, cardboard, kitchen
scraps, or leaf compost.
Students also learned that after adding
one pound of worms to the bin, the worms
will eventually crawl to the bottom of the
bedding material to avoid light, and that
the worms can consume 3 to 3 1/2 pounds
of kitchen waste per week while making
vermicompost. This vermicompost can be

Dr John W. Kurpa
The Area's ONLY
Board Certified.
Chiropractic Neurologist

"The foot bone's connected to the...head bone!"
At Dr. Kurpa's office we know how the feet are the
foundation of the entire spinal pelvic structure. Any
fallen arch or misalignment in the feet can cause pain
(now or later) in the knees, hips, back or neck and
even cause them to wear out prematurely. Many spinal 4-.
conditions are actually the result of feet that arc poorly
supported, and we can fix that!
We Now Have The Associate" Platinum from
Foot Levelers. The Associate Platinum is a digital scanner that
examines your feet and each of the foot's three arches. It prints
a color photo of your feet to show where you may have issues
that could affect the rest of your body. We then can recommend
customized Stabilizers made just for you!
