Hatcher said he has asked the committee to
consider whether the program.can operate at little

of prioritizing which county departments would

any other topics the committee finds appropriate.
The judge also anticipates several issues will be
addressed on the pre-trail release issue when the
committee takes that up later.
These include whether the court's pretrial
release decisions are based on factors that provide
fair and equal consideration to all defendants; if
factors used by the court provide the best protec-
tion for victims and all other members of the
county; and if there other factors, conditions or
criteria the court should use in reaching pretrial
release decisions.

Sneads stifles South Walton to

advance to district semifinals

BY DUSTIN KENT
FLORIDAN SPORTS EDITOR
BLOUNTSTOWN The
Sneads Pirates got a big first
half from John Locke, and a big
second half from Josh Rogers to
take a 61-48 win over the South
Walton Seahawks on Tuesday
night in Blountstown.
It was the quarterfinals of the
District 2-2A tournament, and
the win advanced the Pirates to
Friday's semifinal matchup
with Graceville at 6 p.m.
On Tuesday, it was Locke's
11 first-half points that staked
the Pirates to a 26-16 lead at the
break, and Rogers' 14 second-
half points that helped seal the
deal. Sneads took the lead for
good on a first-quarter 3-point-
er by Locke that made it 8-6.
It was one of three triples by
Locke in the first half, the third
putting Sneads up 21-10 with
3:17 remaining in the half.
Rogers pushed the lead to 13
with a 3-pointer to start the sec-
ond half. After Dylan Smith's
corner triple brought South,
Walton to within seven at 31-
24, Rogers answered with nine
straight points.
A 3-point play by Rogers
made it 34-24, with a free throw
and a jumper by Rogers putting
Sneads up 37-28. After a bank
shot by Shane Seeger got the
Seahawks back to within seven,
Rogers answered with another
3-pointer to put SHS up 40-30.
The Pirates then' started to
pull away, with two free throws
from Jamar White, a basket by
Terrance Green, and a lay-up by,
Aaron Green off of a fast-break
-feed from Rogbrs putting

play. I know they will
be too."

onds on the third-quarter.clock.
Sneads maintained its. edge
into the fourth, with a lay-up by
Terrance Green, .and a put-back
by Rogers giving the Pirates
their biggest lead of.the night at
59-40 with 2:52 to play. It was
a fast finish for a game in which
the Pirates didn't score until the
4:58 mark of the first quarter.
"We had the jitters at the
start," Sneads coach Kelvin.
Johnson said. "After that, I.
thought we played okay. We did
enough to get it done." .
Rogers finished with 16
points to lead SHS, with White
adding 13, Terrance Green 12,
and Locke 11.
The Pirates can now make
Saturday night's district title
game against the winner .of
Cottondale ,vs. BlIountstown
with a victory over a Graceville
team they split with during the
regular season.
"It should be an exciting

Young Bulldogs trying to gain ground

BY DUSTIN KENT
FLORIDAN SPORTS EDITOR

The Marianna Bulldogs will
look to some experienced veterans
and talented youngsters to lead the
way in 2010, and improve on last
year's 13-11 season.
The Bulldogs finished district
runners-up in 2009 to Holmes
County. They were then, knocked
out of the first rotind of the playoffs
by Pensacola Catholic. .
From that team, Marianna lost
key players in Troy Clemmons,
Adam Bigald, Laramie Dryden,
Dustin Larkin, Dustin Miller, and
Brandon Hendricks.
The Bulldogs do return All-
County pitcher/catcher Colby
Johnson, as well as key contribu-
tors Zack Smith, Jaren Bannerman,
Dylan Halstead. Also back is Alex
Bigale, the top returning pitcher for
Marianna, having thrown 40.
innings last season.
Sophomores Brandon Burch and
Clayte Rooks were late call-ups
last season, and will return to play

bigger roles on this year's team.
The Bulldogs also picked up a
couple of transfers in junior utility,
player Dustin O'Hearn of
Donalsonville, Ga., and sophomore
utility player Austin Branch of
Sneads. Marianna coach Andy
Shelton said that he likes the talent.
level of this group. But at this point
in the season there are more ques-
tions than answers as to what the
Bulldogs will be.
"The majority of the guys are
young, and they've got the most
ground to make up," the coach
said. "The good thing is you can.
see-them gaining ground, but they
just have a lot to learn because
they're wet behind the ears. On the
plus side, they're eager' to learn.
Am I excited about this group?
Yeah, I see a lot of potential down
the road for them. It's just a matter
of who gets outit there and does it."
The Bulldogs will have four sen,
iors and six juniors on the team this
season, with the other 21 players in.
the program freshmen and sopho-
mores. Shelton said that puts a high.

. alue on, the leadership of the jun-
iors"and seniors. -
"You can't put a price tag, on
what the juniors and seniors have
to do to lead those younger kids in
the right direction,' the coach said.
"Youth has its pros and its cons,
but you don't really know what a
kid is going to do until he gets put
in the mix. Talent-wise, we'll be
OK. We've just got to get stronger
and faster. I think we'll gain a lot
of ground during the season from
where we start to where we end,
just from the experiences we take,..
. in along the way.. But-could we be
OK at the end?. Yeah, I think we
can be pretty good."
Shelton said Johnson would
carry more of the pitching load this
season along with Bigale,.giving
the Bulldogs two solid pitchers.
Aftei that, who gets on the
mound for Marianna and how
often is still up in the air, according
to Shelton. '.
"Bannerman can pitch. He's got
a chance. (Michael Mader) has got

The Marianna Bulldogs will
carry five wrestlers into this
weekend's 1A regional meet at
Clay High School.
Angel Candeleria will repre-
sent the Bulldogs at 119
pounds, with James Sawyer
(140), Blaine Hansford (130),
Dalton Hendrix (160), and
Dylan Reed (189) also com-
peting for Marianna.
The meet begins Friday and
.concludes with the finals at 6
p.m. on Saturday night.
Marianna wrestling coach
Barry Gardner said he was
proud of 'his qualifiers, but
thought they could have had
even more.
"We did pretty good, but we
should've had more go," the
coach said. "We had a couple
more chances (in the district
meet), but we just didn't capi-
talize on our opportunities.
"But we're really excited
about this. It's a step up in
competition. There are a lot
more teams who have been up
there longer, but we've got a

"It should be good for
us," Gardner said. "I think

a chance, O'Heam has a
chance to pitch some," the
coach said. "We might just
be a pitching staff by com-
mittee after Bigale and
Johnson.
"We've got a bunch of
guys who can do it. It's just
a matter of them getting out
there and doing it."
Whoever is on the mound
for the Bulldogs, he could
have some high-quality
defense behind him,
according to Shelton.
"Defensively, I've got
more competition in the
infield than I've ever had as
a head coach," he said. "We
have,- guys who. can play
here, there and everywhere.
We've got some depth at
catcher, which is always a
good thing. My only ques-
tion mark is who is going to
fill the spots in the out-
Sfield."
Shelton said Halstead and
Bannerman were likely to
snag :a couple of outfield
spots, but most every posi-
tion on the field, was still
being competed for.
"The jobs are pretty much
open to anybody,' the coach
said. "I tell kids that every-
thing is an open market. It's
their job to win it. I've told
them that from day one."
Offensively, the Bulldogs
will count on Smith,
Johnson and O'Hearn to do
some of the heavy lifting
this season.
Smith hit .375 last sea-
son, and will bat in the mid-
dle of the order. But the
player Shelton reserved the
most praise for was
Johnson, who batted .354
last year with a team-lead-
ing four home runs, 'while
posting a 3.27 ERA.
."Colby is the guy every-
body knows about," he said.
"He's our best player. He's
the best guy on the mound
and behind the plate. He's a
baseball player."
With a tough new district
that includes Bay, Arnold,
Pensacola' Catholic,
Chipley and Walton, the
Bulldogs will need to find
their legs sooner rather than
later.
"It's a real good district
with six good teams in it,"
Shelton said. "Talent-wise,
I think we're close to what
we were last year. Youth is
the only thing we have to
compensate for."
The Bulldogs will open
their regular season on Feb.
16 at home against Liberty
County.
