BY DEBORAH

FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
New Jackson County
Sheriff Lou
Roberts named his
chief deputy
Tuesday night, just
moments after
winning the elec-
tion.
Roberts said that
appointing Donnie
Branch to that post Don
was the only big Bra
change he was
willing to make immediate-
ly.
Branch, his good friend
in law enforcement for
many years, retired a year
ago from his longtime posi-
tion as a special agent for
the Florida Department of
Law Enforcement.
Previously, Bran had
served as a deputy and
investigator for the Jackson
County Sheriff's Office.
Roberts, a Democrat,
won handily over his clos-
est competitor, Republican
Jim Peacock. Roberts took
12,348 votes, or 57.8 per-
cent. Peacock got 7,763
votes or 36.3 percent.
As he celebrated his vic-
tory with friends and fami-
ly at election headquarters
and later at Madison's
Restaurant in Marianna,
Robert was awaiting word
on whether Gov. Charlie

Crist will appoint him to
serve until he officially
takes office on Jan. 6.
Former Sheriff John
McDaniel, who ran for
State Representative
District 5, said a few weeks
ago that he would be leav-
ing his post as sheriff at
midnight on Nov. 4, and
had asked Crist authorize
tonight's winner to take
over immediately.

Miller takes over
schools
In other local
races, new Jackson
o-,i : U,:;- n t y
Superintendent of
Schools Lee Miller,
a Democrat, won
by a closer margin
over his
Republican oppo-
nnie nent Steve Benton.
nch Miller took 11,082
enh votes, or 52.8 .per-
cent, while Benton got
close with 9,891 votes, or
47.1 percent.
Incumbent Lockey
retains post
Jackson County
Commission District 3
incumbent Chuck Lockey,
a Democrat, \Non handily
over his challenger,
Republican Seabron Chad
Fears. Lockey took 2,362
votes, or 65.7 percent of
the vote, while Fears pulled
in 1,233 votes, or 34.3 per-
cent.
Stephens wins
county district 5
In the Jackson County
Commission District 5
race, Democrat Kenneth
Stephens took the race by a
comfortable margin over
opponent Ben Howard
Odom, a Republican.

Stephens got 2,965 votes.
.58.5 percent, while Odom
got 2,097 votes, 41.4 per-
cent.
The majority of Jackson
County voters also support-
ed former sheriff John P.
McDaniel in his bid to
become the District 5 State
Representative. McDaniel
got 5,242 votes, or 59.9
percent of the vote in
Jackson County. His oppo-
nent, Brad Drake, got
3,555 votes here, or 40.4
percent of the local vote.
At press time, Drake was
ahead overall by a comfort-

able margin in the multi-
county race, however.
In the presidential race,
the majority of Jackson
County voters cast their
ballots for Republican John
McCain, who got 13,695
votes, or 63.5 percent

locally. Barack Obama got
7,632 votes here, or 35.4
percent of the local vote.
In the Congressional
race, the majority of
Jackson County voters cast
their ballots for incumbent
Allen Boyd. He got 13,827

votes locally, 66.3 percent
of the vote, while chal-
lenger Mark Mulligan got
7,004 votes, or 33.6 per-
cent.
Boyd was ahead by a
comfortable margin at
press time.

The organizational meet-

the food served at this first

assume that the wonderful
yeast rolls for which the
hotel was famous were on
the menu.
The Chipola was also
.known for dozens of fresh
roses grown in their nursery
and placed daily throughout
the hotel. The hotel, built
during the era when the sat-
suma festival brought
tourists to town, grew its
own vegetables and operated
the Chipola Dairy. One of
the milk bottles from the

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Writer objects to
McCain endorsement

(Editor's note: This letter
was received on Monday,
before election day. Today was
the first opportunity to run it,
however, as editorial pages
only run on Sundays and
Wednesdays.)

To the Editor:
I have purchased my last
)t newspaper from the Floridan.
And I will encourage everyone
I know to not purchase it.
I was appalled at the
endorsement of McCain by the
Floridan. This is one of the
most racist newspapers in the
state of Florida.
If McCain and his dog
Rover were on the ticket you

would vote for McCain and
his dog and encourage every-
one else to do the same.
The Republicans got us into
this mess and there we will
stay, if we do not change
direction. A house divided
cannot stand. And if McCain
steals this election that is pre-
cisely where we will be and
stay. He is not qualified to be
President.

Voter talks about why
she voted for Obama

(Editor's Note: This letter was
received on Tuesday)

Dear Editor:

Today I did something that
many of you reading this, as
well as I, never thought I
would be able to do.
I stood in my voting stall in
the Masonic Temple in
Marianna, Florida, and I voted
for a black man to become
President of the United States.
As I stood there, bubbling in
the oval beside Barack
Obama's name, I felt like I
was bubbling in a chapter of
history. The history of our
future, and I was part of it.
I took my children, ages 12
and 9 in with me and I told
them how truly proud I was
that they were living in an
America where this was possi-
ble.
Now, I didn't vote for
Obama because he is black. I
voted for him because I think

he is brilliant, young and ener-
getic and because I see some-
thing in his eyes that looks to
me like a vision for this coun-
try.
Beyond that, for the first
time in my life, the act of vot-
ing and the candidate I was
voting for actually invoked in
me a feeling of hope unadul-
terated, deep-seated hope for
the future. What a feeling that
is!
No matter your candidate
and no matter the outcome of
the election, I hope that you
will pause to reflect on what a
truly remarkable moment in
American history was before
us on this day.

Pirates hope

to finish on

high note
BY DUSTIN KENT
FLORIDAN SPORTS ErrTOR "I asked the seniors if

As far as the Sneads Pirates are
concerned, the District 1-LA race
is over.
The Pirates are mathematical-
ly-eliminated from the race with
no chance of a playoff berth.
That, however, has not stopped
the Pirates from trying to finish
the season with a bang.
after .rallying .for an 18-12,
comeback win over Liberty
County last week, Sneads (3-5, 2-
4 in district play) will try to make
it two in a row and three out of
four Friday ,night when it. plays
host to Freeport (4-4, 3-3 in dis-
trict play) at 7 p.m. for the
Pirates' Homecoming.
After the Pirates' 28-13 loss to
Wewahitchka Oct. 24, Sneads
coach Don Dowling said he
talked to his veteran players about
how they wanted to finish the sea-
son.
"I -asked the seniors if they
wanted to finish this thing strong

the young kids and working with
them," the coach said. "For the
most part, .they bowed up and
played.
"I told them I had three weeks
to work with the younger kids (if
the seniors weren't up to it), but
the seniors have answered the
challenge. They want to be
known as the class that turned it
around. I'm proud of them for
hanging in there."
Against the Liberty. County
Bulldogs, the Pirates' resolve was
put to the test.
, Trailing 12-0 at halftime,
Sneads got back into the game

quickly, capitalizing on a
Bulldogs fumble on the opening
kickoff of the second half, going
in for a touchdown to make it 12-

On that short drive, the Pirates

faced a key 4th-and-1 play to
keep their drive, as well as their
hopes of winning the game, alive.
Mark Lawson converted the
play for a first down and later.
went on to reach the end zone.

"Before that play, I looked over
at one of my coaches and said,
'ball game,'" Dowling said. "If
we hadn't gotten that, we

The Sneads Pirates junior var-
sity football team played its final
game of the 2008 season Oct. 23
against Bonifay and pulled out a
20-0 win, finishing the season
with a 5-1 record.
Sneads got 118 rushing yards
and a touchdown from Dillon
Spates, while Jeff Bell scored a
receiving touchdown .and
returned an interception for a
score to lead the way.
The Pirates got a 20-yard
touchdown pass from TJ Granger
to Bell in the first quarter to take
a 6-0 lead.
Spates scored from 70 yards
out in the second quarter to give
the Pirates a 12-0 lead that they
would carry into halftime.
Bonifaya was driving in the
third 4uarter'when Bell stopped
the surge with an interception at
the Sneads 20-yard line, returning
it 80 yards the other direction for.
the game-clinching touchdown.
Bell converted the 2-point play

It was a pretty eventful
opening weekend of the
season for the No. 2
Chipola Indians.
The Indians saw
dreams of an undefeated
season go down in flames,
then turned around and
pulled off one of the
biggest regular season
wins in school history just
two days later.
After winning the open-
er Friday over Mineral
Area in Poplar Bluffs,
Mo., Chipola lost to Three
Rivers, 78-71, the follow-
ing night.
On Monday, the Indians
took on the No. 1 team in
the country, Indian Hills,
in its own backyard in
Ottumwa, Iowa and
bounced back in style
with a 62-60 win.
Indians guard Casey
Mitchell put back a Gary
Flowers miss in the clos-
ing seconds of the game
to secure the win.
It was a statement vic-
tory for the Indians,' who
proved that their presea-

dent.
"I thought our kids
showed a lot of toughness
and togetherness,"
Chipola coach Greg Heiar
said after the game. "As a
team, for us to come back
after the adversity of the
Three Rivers loss and go
into an environment like
the one they played in, it
says a lot about these
kids.
"We had injuries, we
had sickness and I'm real-

ly pleased and proud of
the team."
Mitchell led the Indians
with 15 points, while
Malcolm Armstead and
Torye Pelham each added
13 points.
Jeremy Jacob had 11
points and 12 rebounds.
Heiar said it was a play-
off atmosphere in Iowa.
"The environment was
just .phenomenal," the
coach said. "There were
2,000-plus (fans) and they
were loud after every shot
that (Indian Hills) hit.
"For the kids to handle
that environment in the
third game of the year
after* we got beat
Saturday, it shows we're
growing up as a team."
Chipola .was without
center Jon Kreft
(mononucleosis), as well
as starting point guard
Darius Stowers (knee).

season opener and also
missed the Three Rivers
game.

point guard for nearly half
the game.
The result was 28
Chipola turnovers and an
upset loss.
"It was unfortunate, but
we still had a chance to
win," Heiar said of
Saturday night's defeat.
"We had so many missed
opportunities. We had
open looks, free throws,

offensive rebounds...we'd
steal the ball and have a 2-
on-1 break and. turn it
right back over.

over that many times and

.come back to practice and really
work on execution on both ends of
the court.
"I think the things we have to
continue to get better at is executing
on the offensive end of the floor,
communicating on defense,
rebounding at both ends of the
court, just things that every team
needs to get better at it."

would've been done. We got it
by about six inches."
Sneads then caught another
big break, recovering yet anoth-
er Liberty County fumble on the
ensuing kickoff, which led to a
Billy Knight field goal to make
it 12-10.
Later in the half, Jeff Davis
rushed for a touchdown to give
the Pirates the lead at 16-12.
A safety by Sherrick Williams
provided for the final margin.

"It was a good win for us,"
Dowling said. "Liberty County
is struggling a little bit, but the
kids come out after halftime and
got a good win for our program.
They just hung in there and kept
playing and made the plays to
win.
"They showed they still had a
heartbeat."
Lawson rushed, for 245 yards
on the night to go over 1,000
yards for the season.

game after.
"The team worked harder every week and looked better
and better each game they played."
Brown, who was assisted this season by Tyler Poole,
Braxton Glover and Louis Glisson, said it was that same
work ethic and persistent effort that carried his, team to suc-
cess.
"This has been the most disciplined and hard-working
team I have coached," he said. "It is easy to rest on one's
laurels after a win, but these players never slacked in prac-
tice throughout the season. In fact, they worked harder to
prepare for each game as the season went on."
In addition to his two touchdowns, Bell also rushed for 80
yards in the game and had five tackles.
Derrick Streater rushed for 55 yards for the Pirates, while
Ethan McClendon added 28 and Granger 27.
Sean Yawn led the defense with 10 tackles and
McClendon and Jarice Barbee each added a sack.

The Pirates now turn their
attention to the Bulldogs of
Freeport, who have lost three
straight games to Jay, Port St.
Joe and West Gadsden.
"I've been there and done
that," Dowling said of losing to
the trio of District 1-lA powers.
"We had the same kind of run
against those teams earlier this
season.
"But (Freeport) has a running
back, No. 30, who is pretty much

their leader. If you can shut him
down, you stand a pretty good
chance to win the ball game."
Dowling compared the
Bulldogs to a pair of earlier
Sneads opponents.
"They run a similar defense to
Liberty County and a similar
offense to Jay," the coach said.
"I hope we can just line up and
play. We need a maximum effort
with no missed assignments and
no loafing and we can win."
