In the meantime, those who wish to request'a refund may drop
Crisp a line at 2305 Fillmore Drive, Marianna. FL 32448.

businesses, and the state set aside roughly $1 million to help with

future set-asides were anticiapted. However, severe economic
downturns make the outlook for future set-asides doubtful.
While the state funding will now go into a general maintenance
fund for the courthouse, the private funds will be sent back to the
contributors or re-directed into the Chipola Historical Trust to help

maintain the 1840's Davis-West
House and for other worthwhile
historical projects, Hart advised.
The text of her entire press
release is below:
"All of us who have worked so
hard during the past several years
to secure funding for renovating
the existing Jackson County
Courthouse with an outside appear-
ance more fitting to Marianna and
it's history, are sad the project must
be placed on hold.
"When it became clear that the
Jackson County Board of
Commissioners had to delay build-
ing a new county administration
building due to the current eco-
nomic conditions, we knew that
plans for renovating the existing
courthouse with a new facade
would also have to be delayed
indefinitely. Pat Crisp and I worked

hard to secure necessary financing
for the Courthouse Renovation
Project. Many Jackson County cit-
izens and businesses contributed
almost $34,000 and the State of
Florida dedicated over $1 million,
but this was not enough to com-
plete the project. Current budget
shortfalls at the state level made it
impossible to secure additional
funds needed to complete the proj-
ect.
"We are heart-broken that the
vision we had of a beautifully ren-
ovated courthouse in the center of
our city has vanished, at least for
the foreseeable future. The dream
of the Marianna Woman's Club
(which also spearheaded the effort)
is also dashed. With no current
plans to proceed with the new
administration building, it is
impossible to proceed with the

courthouse facade renovation proj-
ect.
."When we asked citizens and
businesses to contribute to this
effort, we promised the Chipola
Historical Trust would hold the
funds until they were needed for
the courthouse renovation project.
We also promised to offer a refund
to anyone requesting it, should the
project not go forward as planned.
Since it has been delayed, and can-
not be completed in a timely man-
ner, each donor will soon receive a
letter from Pat Crisp, Treasurer of
the Trnist, offering to refund his or
her contribution.
"Mrs. Crisp's letter will also
offer as an alternative, these contri-
butions be left with the Chipola
Historical Trust to be placed in a
recently established Endowment
Fund to keep the 1840's Davis-

history of Marianna and Jackson
County and for other worthwhile
historical projects.
"It is our hope that those who
contributed to the courthouse reno-
vation project, will choose to leave
their contribution with the Chipola
Historical Trust Endowment Fund.
"Anyone who wants their contri-
bution returned should send a note
to Pat Crisp at: 2305 Fillmore
Drive, Marianna, FL 32448.
"Pat and I along with members
of the Marianna Woman's Club
want to thank all of you for the
confidence placed in us. We are
eternally grateful for your support
and help. We did our best and one
day, maybe the courthouse facade

'Tis the season for the 2008
Holiday Parade of Homes
SPECIAL TO THE FLORIDAN
It's getting to be that time of year again. There's a nip
in the air and quite possibly a pumpkin pie in the oven as
families everywhere begin to ready their homes for the
Christmas season. Once again, the Sneads Carlisle Rose,
Garden Club will add to your holiday festivities as they
present the 2008 Holiday Parade of Homes on Sunday,
Dec. 14 from 2 to 5 p.m. (CST).
One of the five beautiful homes featured on this year's
tour is the Gainer home located on Highway 90 in Grand
Ridge.
Designed by the late Ducky Johnson, this spacious four-
bedroom house is situated dramatically among several
ponds, a lake and wildlife that also call this area home.
' You can bet that Santa will smile approvingly' when he
spies the custom-built dollhouse that resides on the bank
of the entrance pond to the property, a gift given to the
homeowner's daughter when she was 3.
As guests enter the new home and mo% e into the fami-
ly room, they are greeted by a large ten-foot Christmas
tree showcasing ornaments that hold special meaning for
the members of the Gainer family.
Three more spectacularly decorated trees can be found
in the master and children's bedrooms, all depicting a dif-
ferent theme and color scheme.
The elegant formal dining room is set for a special
Christmas dinner as the table gleams with heirloom china
handed down from generations.
Mark your calendars now for this fun and inspiring
event. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased the day of the
tour at the Log Cabin Communitm House on Old Spanish
Trail in Sneads, where the tour begins.
Tickets may also be purchased in advance from any
Garden Club member. Call 593-6143 for more informa-
tion.
For the next ,ei'\till 'weeks. the' Jakl-son County
Floridan will spoiliglh a hone ei to be featured in this
event. ,

The holidays are coming prepare

By THOMAS VINCENT MURPHY

The Thanksgiving and
Christmas Holidays will
soon be here!
Thanksgiving .has always
been very special to me.,
Even though I love
Christmas and all the great
music and excitement it
has given me over -the
years (especially as a child
waiting for my gifts),
Thanksgiving doesn't
carry the pressure, expec-
tations and expenses that
Christmas can bring; espe-
cially during this time of
financial crisis in our
country.
As a youngster I was
raised in- an area where
frigid weather and snow
were a normal part of the
winter, but during the fall
and month of November
we usually were still able
to throw the football and
play in the nippy air with-
out the heavy winter cloth-
ing..
The feeling, of the
Thanksgiving Holiday
spirit was in the. air!.I
Over the years there has.
been one thing ..that has
remained consistent; ..the
anticipation of
Thanksgiling dinner with
family and friends! In the
past when relatives were
asked to bring a special
dish to the home chosen
for the Thanksgiving
Holiday meal,, you knewI

that there would be deli-
cious, homemade foods
made by the best family
cooks or close friends.
With different people
assigned to bring a partic-
ular dish it made it easier
on everyone. In the past I
was a true fan of this
process (sharing the cook-
ing responsibilities); but
somewhere along the way
things began to falter.
When you attend a din-
ner and the food you keep
returning t0 comes from
your own home, because
your wife or husband is a
great cook, you might as
well eat at home. .
If there is one meal that
doesn't need to be botched
up, it's the "Thanksgiving
Day-meal"! The statement
"potluck dinner" somehow
doesn't sound as good ,as it
did in the past to me.
Webster's New World
Dictionary describes-
"potluck" as; "whatever
the family meal happens
to be".
For me, that's not a good
definition for a
Thanksgiving Day family
meal.
Let's face⁢ the women
of .the past. who would
spend a full day or two
cooking in the hot atmos-
phere of the kitchen have
been disappearing at a
rapid rate.
Women that work one or
.two jobs i-o help: support

their families are often too
tired to .cook a regular
meal.
Times have changed;
and in many cases, so have
our Holiday meals. If you
are fortunate enough to
belong to a family that still
does things the old fashion
way, and your family and
extended family are able
to still have those large
scrumptious meals you
have enjoyed in the past,
you have a lot to be thank-
ful for.
There is no doubt about
it; the sad economic situa-
tion has also affected our
meals. At the last large
meal gathering I attended,
I could see the difference
in the size of the bowls
and dishes of food from
two years ago at a similar
gathering (the bowls and
dishes .had gotten much
smaller).
Have you ever been at a
dinner and spotted a dish
made by someone you
knew was a great cook;
but the bowl wasn't large
and you were far back in
the food line?
That's not too good a
feeling is it; especially
when there's not much
more you feel you' would
enjoy? The earlier you
began planning for the
Holiday Seasons, the more'
successful it will be.
By starting early you
may be able to plan well

Shariah David

and cake. "Dora" treat; bags
were also' given out.
Shariah's actual birthday
was Nov. 11. Friends and
family came out to. cele-
brate with her on the spe-
cial occasion. She received
many gifts.

A slow start doomed the
Marianna Bulldogs Friday night,
as the Port St. Joe Sharks cruised
to a 35-14 win in Port St. Joe in
the final regular season game for
both teams.
The Sharks took a 20-0 lead
into halftime and the Bulldogs
could never gets closer than 14
points in the second half.
"They jumped on. us,"
Marianna coach Rob Armstrong
said. "They did a good job. They
played good, played faster than
we did and the next thing you
know, we're down a couple
scores andt we never could fight
back. We just couldn't stop
them."
Bradley Battles and RJ Bowers
scored the only two touchdowns
of the.night for MHS.

Marianna running back Bradley Battles falls ,forward for extra,
yardage in a game against Pensacola Catholic earlier this season.

in the mind's of this year's
team.
"That's what we've
talked about. We try to talk
about it every day,"
Holman said of making the
Final Four. "(Forward) is
really excited. She's made
that her personal goal. This
is her last chance. She
wants to leave her mark and
has one more year to do it."
Forward scored 39 points
in that memorable game
against NFC and carried the
Lady Hornets in the second
half.
She'll again be counted
on to carry the scoring load
for Cottondale, as Lady
Hornet opponents are
always aware of.
"She's going to have to
carry a lot her senior year,"
Holman said. "But when
you have a player like her,
she's got a big bullseye on
her back, so the other senior
leaders have to step in and
carry the load as well for us
to get there."
Obert's Lady Hornets
used an aggressive, full-
court, trapping defense and
fast-paced style to get to the

Regional Finals.
Holman said her Lady
Hornets would play the
same way.
"With what we've got
and with our personnel,
we'll definitely keep on
with the Cottondale style of
play in terms of pressing
and keeping up the pace of
the game," the coach said.
"It fits (the players). They
play better the faster we
play."
However, without much
depth, Cottondale will have
to be in great shape to play
such a demanding style all
season.
"I've been conditioning
really hard for that purpose
because we knew about the
numbers," Holman said.
"We don't want to run into
that fourth quarter, empty-
gas syndrome, where we
lose a 10-point lead just
because we're fatigued."
The Lady Hornets lost to

played a part in the coach's decision.
Sneads scored first on a Mark Lawson touchdown to
go up 8-0 and led 21-6 after a touchdown by Jeff Davis
and another by Lawson.
But South Walton marched 90 yards in the closing
seconds of the first half to get a touchdown and make it
a 21-13 game at the half.
The Pirates had one last chance after South Walton
took the lead with the ball on the Seahawks' 3Q-yard
line, but Sneads was unable to capitalize.
"We had a good drive going, but we shot ourselves in
the foot, had a penalty that hurt us and we had to punt
it back to them," Dowling said. "Then they pretty much
burned up the clock."
However, Dowling said he was pleased with his
team's effort in the final game of a disappointing sea-'
son.
"The kids came out and really played hard, it being
senior night and all," the coach said. "John Locke was
sick most of the time, so Taylor Edge played quarter-
back and did a good job of running the offense."
Sneads finishes the season with a 3-7 record in
Dowling's first year as the Pirates' head man.

Floridan weekly fishing report

LAKE SEMINOLE -
Fair numbers of large-
mouths are being taken
early and late in the day.
Topwater baits in shallow
water can produce some
good, if sporadic, action.
Texas-rig worms may pay
off as well.
Jig-and-pig combinations
and Carolina-rig worms are
prime baits in deeper water
along the river and creek
ledges.
Preferred jig colors are
black and dark blue. Fish
between 6 and 12 feet.
Crappies are biting rea-
sonably well. Stay in the
stumps or along the
grasslines and fish about 12
feet deep. Both minnows
and jigs can work.
Catfish are active in spots
all across the lake. Look for
them deep (12 to 15 feet)
over hard bottoms. Large
wigglers and prepared stink
baits can produce fair num-
bers of pan-size cats.
Bream are slow to fair in
spots, while hybrids contin-
ue to school sporadically.
LAKE EUFAULA -
Bass fishing is slow. Small
fish continue to show up in
grassy areas early and late.
Medium-running
crankbaits and black Texas-
rig worms are good, as are
occasional topwater offer-
ings. Better fish may hit
crankbaits in 12 feet of
water in spots. Some bass
may be taken near the
mouths of creeks on Rat-L-
Traps and some are biting
around timber and brush
piles. Fish slowly for these
fish and use smaller-size
Texas-rig worms.

Crappie fishing is report-
ed as fair to good. Areas
where water is slightly
stained or where stained
water is meeting an area of
clearer water are good spots
to check out.
Some good fish are being
taken from brushy structure
at 8 to j5 feet. Minnows
and jigs may both work.
Areas beneath bridges are
also recommended loca-
tions.
Hybrids, bream, and cat-
fish are slow at present.
L A K E
ANDREWS/CHATTA-
HOOCHEE RIVER -
Water conditions are pretty
good right now and fishing
is fairly good in some loca-
tions up and down the river.
Bass fishing is fair.
Largemouths may be
caught along ledges in spots
where the current is not too
great. Fish jig-and-pig com-
binations and be patient.
Bass fishing up the creeks
is fair also, but sporadic at
times. Use worms and
crank baits there. The fish-
ing has slowed consider-
ably near sandbars and
bankside structure.
Catfishing is fair to good
up and downriver, particu-
larly during wanner periods
of the day. For the larger
cats, go downstream from
Columbia and fish along
the bluff walls and near
river bends. Tailwater cat-
fishing is fair on frozen
shad, worms, or prepared
baits.
Crappies Will bite active-
ly when concentrations of
fish can be located.
However, they are scat-

tered.
Bream fishing up the
creeks has slowed a great
deal.

pool levels, and other such
information for area water-
ways may be obtained by
