Newly-elected Jackson
County Superintendent of
Schools Lee Miller said he
considers it a gift to serve
the parents, students and
employees of the county
school district.
In fact, he considers it a
birthday gift.
"It's a birthday present
and a half," said Miller,
who will officially take
office on Nov. 18, which
happens to be his birthday.
On Nov. 4, Miller
received 11,082 votes and
competitor Steve Benton
received 9,891 votes. Miller
replaces current
Superintendent Danny
Sims.
Miller is currently the
principal of Golson
Elementary; a position that
will be advertised in the
near future, and decided on
at the Nov. 18 meeting, said
Miller.
Since a budget for this
fiscal year has already been
determined, Miller said his
short-term goal is to watch
it closely.

He said he's keeping in
mind that there may be
more state budget cuts
ahead. While he's not sure
which part of the county
school budget might need
to be whittled down if cuts

it would provide an oppor-
tunity to have a close look
at each budgeted item.
Also part of his short-
term goals, Miller said he

they want to see me," said
Miller. "I plan to visit each

There's a 2 p m.. matinee on Sunday and tickets

In a Chipola press release about the play by
William Inge. the plot is described this way:
"During a howling snowstorm, a busload of
weary travelers must hole up at a roadside diner
until morning. A nightclub singer namedCherie has
been kidnapped by a young cowk boy k ho is ready to
sling her over his shoulder and carry her, kicking

After being out of commission
for about a year, the City of
Marianna's Web site is now up and
running.
"It's pretty much user-friendly."
said Mike White, a technical con-
sultant for the city. "It has sections
for each--department ;-and each
department can post its own new s
articles and announcements. You
can view minutes from commis-
sion meeungs and also the meet-
ing agendas. And the latest news
articles will be posted on the front
page of the site."
Also, at
www.cityofmarianna.com v isi-
tors to the site may lea'e com-
ments for the city and even submit
confidential tips to the Marianna
Police Department. White said the
crime tip line won't require per-
sonal information, such as one's
email.
The site reopened just a couple
of weeks ago, said White.
"We've also put in extra recre-
ation department pages," said
White. "The departments have
already started to post articles, so
stayed tuned for more."

Chipola meets
top standards
in accreditation
BY KATE McCARDELL
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
Meeting tougher standards
than in past years, Chipola
College has once again
received accreditation from the
Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools.
The accreditation is required
from universities and colleges
in order for them to be eligible
for financial aid and federal
funding, according to Dr.
Sarah Clemmons, Chipola
College Executive Vice-
President for Instruction and
Student Services.
SACS accreditation also
ensures that students' credits
may be acknowledged by other
schools, she said.
Reviewed every ten years,
Chipola College has main-
tained continuous accreditation
with SACS since 1957.
This time around, Chipola
reaffirmed its accreditation
while meeting higher standards
as a four-year school, said
Clemmons. Chipola is now
accredited as a Level II institu-
tion because it has been
authorized to offer several
Bachelor's degrees, including

The district' champion
Crusaders took a 31-0 w in over
Walton Oct. '24 aid a 37-12 vic-

"It was, a lot like our game,"
Marianna coach Rob.Armstrong

The losses make: Friday night a

Marianna defeated Walton 34-

Of course, the Bulldogs had all
the answers .for the Braves'
attack in last season's matchup in

"Last year we did a good job of
not giving them anything easy
and limiting the big play,"

Armstrong said. "We took care
of the football and kept (posses-

."That's a credit to the players
and the coaching staff for getting

we executed and did a good job
defensively."

The No. 2 Gulf Coast Lady Commodores also

though Lady Indians coach David Lane said that
Santa Fe proved it will be no pushover this

"That was a pretty hard-fought game," the
coach said. "We were down for most of the game
and made a little run in the last four minutes and
pushed ahead to win, but they're a very talented
team. The\ beat us last year at their place, so our
kids are anxious to get out there and play them
again. ..'
Lane said that FCCJ would be formidable,
though it didn't possess the numbers that'his
team would trot out.
."',They've got a very talented first five, but
after that it's a little bit of a drop-off," the coach
said. 'I hope our depth will be effective against
them."

Chipola was without star post player Latoya

winniirig in blowout fash-
ion against the likes of
Blountstown, Bonifay and
Chipley and in dramatic
fashion against
Jacksonville Episcopal and
Florida High.
The latter win was the
high point of the season for
the Bulldogs and one of the
biggest regular season
wins for MHS in recent
years.
The Bulldogs followed
that victory with another
sterling performance
against Northview in a 42-

6 win last week in
Marianna, giving the team
three straight impressive
victories since the loss to
Catholic.
"We started talking
about that in the summer
during workouts, about
how we want to get better
every week," Armstrong
said. "I hope it will pay off
for us. We definitely need
to put our best effort for-
ward Friday to get into the
playoffs."
Armstrong said that his
team was as close to 100

been in several weeks and
that he expected running
back Tre Long, who has
missed the last two games
with a foot injury, to be
back in the lineup against
Walton.
"I'm confident he'll
play, I just don't know how
much," the coach said.
"We're planning for him to
be out there. We'll just
have to see how (the foot)
feels once we get going."
