A Jackson County man was
shot to death at his home late
Thursday afternoon on Blue
Springs Road.
One person of interest in the
shooting had been located as of
nightfall, but investigators were
still looking for at least one more
and a possible accomplice at
deadline. The identity of the per-
son being questioned was not
immediately given.
Investigators were searching
Cloud Road and other locations
with tracking dogs and men on
the ground as darkness fell
Thursday.
Gerald Williams, a neighbor of

"The foot bone's connected to the...head bone!"
At Dr. Kurpa's office we know how the feet are the
foundation of the entire spinal pelvic structure. Any
fallen arch or misalignment in the feet can cause pain
(now or later) in the knees, hips, back or neck and
even cause them to wear out prematurely. Many spinal
conditions are actually the result of feet that are poor-
ly supported, and we can fix that!
We Now Have The Associate" Platinum from
Foot Levelers. The Associate Platinum is a digital scanner that
examines your feet and each of the foot's three arches. It prints
a color photo of your feet to show where you may have issues
that could affect the rest of your body. We then can recommend
customized Stabilizers made just for you!

Williams said that shortly after
he heard multiple gunshots, a
woman next door summoned him
to 6031 Blue Springs Road. There,
he said, he found Garrett lying in
the carport with at least one gun-
shot wound to the back.
Many of Garrett's friends and
fqrnmily mmhers gathered at the
Jackson Hospital emergency room'

to lend each other support as news
of the shooting spread. Among
them was Celeste Myrick, a close
friend of Garrett's mother who said
she considered Garrett a nephew.
Authorities with the Jackson
County Sheriff's office say the
killing may have been related to an
earlier report of trouble.
Just hours before, investigators

had used tracking dogs and a heli-
copter to. search for a burly, red-
haired man armed and dressed in
camouflage. who was reportedly
upset and claiming that some of his
tire rims had been stolen.
In that incident, dogs picked up a
scent and searched in the woods
off Lawrence Road near its inter-
section witn ilue Springs Road.
T

The search went cold, however,
with investigators speculating that
the man had a vehicle waiting for
him on the back side of Lawrence
Road.
The shooting was reported a few
hours later in the same neighbor-
hood.
More information will be pro-
vided as it becomes available.

Pirates 'excited'

about facing

Yellowjackets

BY DUSTIN KENT
FLORIDAN SPORTS EDITOR
.With his team reeling from
treee straight lopsided district
losses, Sneads coach Don
Dowling might expect a sour
mood from his team in the week
leading to tonight's home game-
against Vernon.
However, the Pirates coach
said Thursday that his team has
had renewed energy this week
with an intense focus on getting
back in the win column.
"The last three days of practice
have been very good," the coach
said. "I told the team that
Monday was the best Monday
practice we've ever had. We were
a-. little sluggish at the start
Tuesday, but picked it up and fin-
ighed very strong. (Wednesday),
we talked about making it three
ifn a row and they nailed it.
.'"I'm as excited about this
game as any all year. We're look-
ing for a win. The kids are really
excited."
According to Doling. a big
part of that excitement comes

Taylor Edge out of the lineup.
Dowling said that the team is
focused on supporting its young-
quarterback and giving him a
chance to be successful.
"The kids have kind of rallied
around him," the coach said of
Locke. "They're working their
butts off because they want him
to succeed. They're looking after
him."
The coach said he is excited
about what the talented youngster
can bring to the table, particular-
ly with his athleticism and arm
strength, though he cautioned not
to be surprised if Locke makes
the kind of errors freshmen quar-
terbacks tend to make. ,
"He's young, so I'm waiting on
him to make a freshman mis-
take,"' Dowling said. "I'm giving
him a couple of (hose because
that is going to happen. But he
has got a great arm and he's just

Emerald Coast Invitational

BY DUSTIN KENT'
FLORIDAN SPOwIS EDITOR.
The "Corona" team from.
Kindel Lanes recently took first
place in the Emerald Coast
Invitational bowling tournament (
in Fort Walton Beach, winning
the Sept. 11 tournament with a
team score of 3,450.
The team, which consists of
Jason Carter, John Kindelspire,
Keith Rhodes, Larry Waldren
and team captain Robert Booth,
took a first-place prize of
$5,000.
However, Booth said money
wasn't the main priority for he
and his bowling mates.
"We just had a good time and
bowled real good," he said. "We
just go to have a good time.
Anything we get back from it is
just icing on the cake."

Booth said that his team com-
petes in the Emerald Coast tour-
ney every year and finished sec-
ond in the Miracle Strip tourney
in Pensacola earlier this year.
"We've competed in a lot of
team events." Booth said, "and
all of it has to click just right for
you to win. If one guy doesn't
have it, that could cost you the
tournament. Everything finally
clicked (in Fort Walton Beach)."
Booth said he had the highest
score in the team event, but he
credited Carter for providing a
big boost.
"Jason really carried us down
there," Booth said. "He bowled
well over his average, which
helped a lot."
Corona's next tournament
will also. be in Fort Walton
Beach in the Northwest Florida
tournament in February.

Hornets rest up for critical district games

season. -Floridan File Photo

After breaking through with their first win in over
a month last Friday night, the Cottondale Hornets
will spend tonight just watching, which is just fine
by Hornets coach Mike Melvin.
"It has been a pretty good week," the coach said
of his team's first of two bye weeks this season.
"It's nice to not have to stress about a Friday night
right now."
It's also nice for the Hornets to be coming off of
a win for a change.
Cottondale (2-4, 1-1 in District 1-1B play)
destroyed John Paul II 66-0 in its last game, break-
ing a four-game losing streak.
It was a welcome change of pace for the Hornets,
who had previously spent three straight weeks on
,the road in losses to Wewahitchka, FAMU and
South Walton.
The Hornets now get another week to prepare for
their most important stretch of the season, with their

final two district games, an Oct. 24 date with
Aucilla Christian followed the next week by arch-
rival Graceville, on the horizon.
"We came out last Friday night and played well,"
Melvin said. "Now, the open week gives our guys a
chance to rest up and get refreshed with
Homecoming next week. And the extra week gives
us a chance to get ready for Graceville."
Melvin said the team's non-district schedule,
which doesn't feature any lB opponents, was
designed specifically to prepare his team for this
part of the season.
"Our schedule at the beginning of the season was
pretty tough to get us ready for this stretch," the
coach said. "We're 1-1 in district and if you want to
keep playing, you have to win district games. That's
what we're focusing on, that's what we're practic-
ing for."
While John Paul II posed significantly less of a.
threat than the Hornets' prior opponents, the win

SPECIAL TO FLORIDAN
IRVING Texas Former

Preseason Newcomer of the
Year, the league office
announced Tuesday.
Little was picked in a vote
by the league head coaches,
who are not permitted to vote,
for their own student-athletes.
Chipola Head Coach Greg
Heiar said he believed Little's
success as an Indian will trans-
late to his time at Kansas.
"Mario worked extremely
hard during his two years at
Chipola and I have no doubts
he will continue this mentality
for Coach Self at Kansas," he
said.
Little arrives in Lawrence
after leading Chipola (Fla.)
College to a 68-5 record over
the last two seasons.
He averaged 15.2 points, 5.5
rebounds and 2.6 assists a year

fluid and smooth in everything he
does.
"We tried him a little bit earlier
in the year as a backup (quarter-
back) and he was not comfortable.
This week, he looks like he's been
doing it for most of the year."
Dowling said Locke's' maturity
is advanced beyond his age and
his physical gifts give him a
chance to make things happen
even when the play breaks down.
"He's just an athlete," the coach
said. "He's on the ball with every-
thing he does. If things start going
south with protection, he's got the
wheels that he can take it the dis-
tance. He's an exciting player."
With those new talents will
come a new type of offensive
gameplan for the Pirates, who will
try to take advantage of Locke's
athletic ability.
"We'll get into some (shotgun
formation) and get (running back
Mark Lawson, running back Jeff
Davis and Locke) in the backfield
together," Dowling said. "We'll
move (Locke) around and let him
get on the corner and on the move.
We're just going to let our athletes
get the ball and make some
plays."
It's an offensive philosophy that
resembles that of the Pirates'
opponent tonight.

The Yellowjackets run a spread
offense that will challenge the
Sneads defense down ,the field
with speedy athletes.
Vernon is just 2-3 on the season,
though the losses have come to
Walton, Graceville and South
Walton, teams with a combined
record of 13-3.
The Yellowjackets posted a 28-
7 win over a Jay team that blew
out the Pirates 30-6 two weeks
ago. .
"(Vernon) started off like gang-
busters, then lost three in a row,
but it's not'like they were playing
fluke teams," Dowling Wid.
"Vernon's an athletic team and
they're built on speed."
Dowling said that his team is
ready to play, though, and is ready
for the challenge.
"It has been three very good
days of practice," he said. "I've.
slept all night and been smiling all
day. It's been a very good Week."
The game kicks off at 7 p.m.

Also out for tonight's game for
the Pirates is starting right offen-
sive tackle Ethan Hewitt, who has
a stinger.
Dowling said that Lawson and
Davis were "about as healthy as
they'll be for a football season,"
and close to 100 percent.
