The federal stimulus package has been used to
provide money for renters in crisis, and Jackson
Countians could get a share of that money.
The Department of Children and Families issued
a press release Tuesday about the program.
The federal dollars are being funneled through
DCE, which in turn is using the non-profit Catholic
Charities of Northwest Florida to help administer
the cash.
Jackson, Bay, Calhoun,. Gulf, Holmes and
.Washington counties will split a $1.18 million
share of Florida's total allocation of $12.6 million,
set aside to held those who rent.
People who have been evicted .because they
couldn't pay the rent, or who are facing potential
eviction because of a failure to pay can apply.
Renters who owe back rent can get money for rent
and utilities so they can stay put. Families who are
already homeless can get money for rent, utilities
and security deposits so they get into a dwelling.

SPECIAL TO THE FLORIDAN
Cub Scouts iri.-Pack 170
met outside at the First
Presbyterian Church for
their most recent den meet-
ing, in order to learn how to
use tools for upcoming
building projects-
Bear Scouts completed
tool boxes, under the
instruction of Ray Morgan
and leader Wilson Sanchez.
As part of meeting, the
requirements for complet-
ing this Achievement from
their handliooks, Bear
Scouts had to show how to
use and take care of four
tools, build a tool box, and
use at least two tools to fix
something.
The Webelos began a
month-long unit of study
on how to handle a variety
of tools in order to use
wood, leather, metal, or
other materials for their
projects. Their first cre-
ations were made by
drilling holes in pieces of
silverware, threading fish- .
ing line through the holes
and hanging the pieces to
make silverware wind
chimes. Scouts learned
how to use electric drills'to
put holes in the forks,
knives and spoons, and pli-
ers to bend the silverware.
Upon completion of sev-
eral more building projects,
Webelos will earn their
Craftsmanship badges.

It's easy to second-guess juries.
Like any good Monday morning
quarterback, we can review what tran-
spired and state what we would have
done differently. We can pick apart the
decisions made with the benefit of 20-
20 hindsight.
But the truth is, unless we actually
sat on the jury with 11 others, heard
what they heard, and deliberated with
them afterward, there's no telling what
we would have decided.
'I'he recently concluded quadruple
murder trial for Wesley Williams was
supposed to bring some closure to a
particularly heinous chapter of Jackson
County's history. The deaths of four
people three of them babies -
shocked the community four years ago.
The gruesome circumstances behind
their deaths just added to the shock.
Some feel the prosecution's case was

Murder trials in real life are rarely as
cut and dtied as they are portYayed in
books, movies and films. Cases involv-
inj; a clear "smoking gun" are the
exception, rather than the rule.
As a result, a jury of 12 people must
often sift through what evidence there
is and rely on their gut, as much as
their reason, to reach a decision. They
have to wqigh the community's desire
for justice with the realization that their
decision may well condemn a tnan to
death.
Anybody out there want that job?
Probably not. The hours are long and
the pay is lousy. We need to respect the
jury's decision, everE if we don't agree
with it.
Williams will get an appeal. If the
higher court feels the jury's logic was
flawed, or if it finds, the revelation that
the relation between one of the wit-
nesses with three jurors was improper,
they will rule accordingly. That appeal
court decision will probably itself by
appealed, by one side or the other.
Meanwhile, Judge Bill Wright still
has to pass sentence. If the sentence is
death, an appeal is automatic. This case
is far from over. The community needs
to idlow the justice system to do what
it was designed to do, however long '
that may take.

Place your hand near the
chimney opening above the
firebox. If you feel cool air
coming down, there is not
adequate draft. This can
cause the smoke to drift
down into the house,
because the cold air above
is pushing it down.
Proper. draft can be
achieved by opening a win-
dow or door about three
inches to create better
uplift. After doing this,
check for the draft again. If
cold air is still coming

This allows room tempera-
ture air to enter and create
the needed uplift. This step
is not usually necessary in
north Florida or south
,Alabama's mild winters,
Pope added, but may be
needed if the first method
doesn't work.
Lastly, make sure your
