Local farmer trying to grow his own fuel schools

BY DEBORAH BUCKHALTER
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER-
Jackson County farmer. Jeff
Pittman has found a unique way
to use his idle peanut and cotton
acreage during their off-season.
and his latest crop is drawing a
crowd.
Carloads of families have
arrived to stop and look at his
100-acre field of golden -centered.
sunflowers in the Lovedale.em-. -
munity, sbme taking pictures of
themselves against the bright
background.
Pittman likes the way the flow-
ers look, too, but a pretty land-
scape isn't his main goal. He's
looking to find an alternative fuel
for his aging tractors. He plans to
crush the flowers and extract
their oil in a few more weeks.
The oil will be convened into
B100 a 100 percent biofuel that
he can blend with conventional
diesel. What's more, he'll be able
to use what's left in the crushing
as cattle feed.
Pittman embarked on the proj-
ect several weeks ago,'when gas
prices were nearing $4.
"Our initial goal was to sup-
port our irrigation methods," he
explained. "We bum 25,000 to
30,000 gallons of fuel through
irrigation, and we use 50,000 gal-
lons for everything combined..
The $4 fuel was! getting us
depressed. These sunflower vari-
eties we're using has high oil

give us some relief from some of
these high energy prices. In 2008,
we're going to average $3.90 a
gallon. Seven years ago, we aver-

Pittman said he's going to use
the biofuel in his older tractors,

be a learning process, and has no
plans to involve other producers,:
at least,for now.
"This is just an experiment.
something interesting to talk
about at this point, it makes good
conversation. I wouldn't dare get
anybody else involved right now.
It's just something we're trying

on our own. We don't know
where this is taking us, but if it's
successful and we get to the point
where we know it's workable,
then I'd be glad to share what I
know with anyone. We're not
there yet, by a long shot. We
don't have all this figured out."

BN KATE McCARDELL
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
Staff, alumni and parents of
students in Graceville are join-
ing forces to create a perma-
nent. central effort to raise
funds for school programs and
scholarships.
The Graceville Education
Foundation was formed over
this summer, according to'
Graceville High Principal Chris
Watkins.
"It's an organization with a
goal to help with the financial
needs of schools in the
Graceville area." said Watkins.
. Watkins said funding raised
through the foundation will go
toward FCAT rewards trips,
honors and awards banquets,
graduation, classroom supplies,
music programs, club activities,
after school programs, field trip
transportauon and books.
The foundation also aims at
raising enough money to offer
scholarships, said Watkins.
"There have always been
times of need and Graceville
High School is an even smaller
school than it was 15 years ago.
More financing is difficult to
come by with 'fewer students.
Many people. have asked how
they can help and many people .
do different things to help. But
one unified effort I think will
work well," said Watkins.
Watkins noted that Marianna
and Sneads high schools have
similar foundations.
"Our goal is to collect
enough funds for it to collect
interest and continue on
through the years. A lot of peo-
ple say it's a tough time to be
doing this, but it's times like
this that we need the education
foundation most," said
Watkins.
Although the primary focus
will be for students at GHS, the
foundation was named to be
able to help any school in the
Graceville district. If Graceville
Elementary School has a need
for an item, they may go to the
Foundation Board of Directors
and make a request, said
Watkins. -
Ben Armstrong, a Graceville
graduate who is now an attor-
ney in Dothan, Ala., is serving
as president of the board.
Byron Mixon, a retired GHS,
teacher,is serving as vice pres-
ident of the board.
Those who wish to contribute
to the foundation may call the
school, at 263-4451. .

"The foot bone's connected to the.head bone!"
At Dr. Kurpa's office we know how the feet are the"
foundation of the entire spinal pelvic structure. Any
fallen arch or misalignment in the feet can cause pain
(now or later) in the knees, hips, back or neck and
even cause them to wear out prematurely. Many spinal
conditions are actually the result of feet that are poor-
ly supported, and we can fix that! .
We Now Have The Associatem Platinum from
Foot Levelers. The Associate Platinum is a digital scanner that
examines your feet and each of the foot's three arches. It adot
a color photo of your feet to show where you may have issues
that could affect the rest of your body. We then can recommend

District duel

Tigers host Baby Rattlers in titanic

District 1-1B showdown in Graceville

BY DUSTIN KENT
FLORIDAN SPORTS EDITOR
The Graceville Tigers face perhaps their
biggest test of the season tonight when
they play host to the FAMU Baby Rattlers
at 7 p.m.
A win would give the Tigers (5-1, 1-0 in
District 1-1B play) the inside track on a
district championship. ;
A loss and they would likely need a win
in Cottondale Nov. 7 against the rival
Hornets to earn a playoff'spot.
"This is a big game," Graceville coach
Todd Wertenberger said Thursday. "It
deals with the playoffs and it's a district
game. The FAMU coaches sent word to get
the district championship trophy ready
because ,they. think this is for the district
championship."
FAn I? Tnters the game with a 2-0 mark
in djsuc lk ynd could ensure a perfect
league record by winning tonight, with
bnly John Paul II remaining on the sched-
ule.
The Baby Rattlers are 4-3 overall, with
the losses coming to North Florida
Christian, Trinity Christian and 3A
Rickards.
FAMU's two district wins came over
Cottondale and Aucilla Christian by the
