closing

down soon
BY DEBORAH BUCKHALTER
.FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
Beall's Department Store in
the Crossroads shopping center
in Marianna is closing at the
end of this year, but the Beall's
Outlet Store in the Oak Station
shopping plaza will remain in
full operation.
Company representative Jim
Simpson confirmed Tuesday
that the local department, store
will close its doors on Dec. 27.
See BEALL'S, Page 7A >

On Saturday, Nadine Long put
a political sign in her front yard
supporting Barack Obama.
On Monday night, it was
stolen. And the thief went a step
further he or she replaced it
with two John McCain signs.
Long's husband discovered the
switch when he went into the
yard around 10 p.m:, Monday.
Instead of removing the
McCain signs from their yard, the
Longs left them there, and part of
the family, stayed up all night
Monday fashioning three home-
made signs to go along with
them.
One of their signs explain that
the Obama sign was stolen and
replaced with McCain signs. One
declares that the family's free-
dom of choice was violated in the
act, and the third asks a question:
"What's next Jackson County? A
cross burning in our yard?"

Marianna, Florida, The History of Jackson County
Volume I, and The Battle of Natural Bridge, Florida:
The Confederate Defense of Tallahassee.
Dorothy Seals began teaching in Cottondale in 1935
earning a salary of $60 a month and spent the next 58
years working in education. For over 35 years she has
been collecting the "childhood memories, friendships,
happy and care free thoughts, and activities some

"The foot bone's connected to the...head bone!"
At Dr. Kurpa's office we know how the feet are the
foundation of the entire spinal pelvic structure. Any
fallen arch or misalignment in the feet can cause pain
(now or later) in the knees, hips, back or neck and
even cause them to wear out prematurely. Many spinal
conditions are actually the result of feet that are poor-
ly supported, and we can fix that!
We Now Have The Associate" Platinum from
Foot Levelers. The Associate Platinum is a digital scanner that
examines your feet and each of the foot's three arches. It prints
a color photo of your feet to show where you may have issues
that could affect the rest of your body. We then can recommend
customized Stabilizers made just for you!

Department, and the Florida Highway Patrol," the release read. When Howell deployed
"Canine Max" to sniff the vehicle, the search dog alerted on the truck and trailer, according
to the news release.
"A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed one hundred and fifty kilos (330 pounds) of
cocaine with a street value of approximately $3,000,000 and $3,000 in U.S. currency," read
the news release. Driver Eduardo Requejo of Miami and co-driver Jorge Luis Almanza.of
Texas were arrested on trafficking charges and turned over to Special Agents of the United
States Drug Enforcement Administration and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement,
according to FDOT.
FDOT said that the truck tractor and trailer were seized, and that the investigation is ongo-

Until 'then, he said, shoppers can
expect to enjoy deepening discounts
as the closing date gets closer. Any
remaining merchandise will be dis-
tributed among the company's
remaining 87 department stores in
Florida. The company also has 452
Outlet Stores throughout the country.
Among the reasons for the closure
of the department store is that the
lease on the 25,000 square-foot build-
ing is up at the end of the year and the
structure no longer meets the compa-
ny's standard footprint of 80,000
square feet per store, Simpson said.
Although the department store is,
closing, hie said, much of the mer-
chandise like that in the store will still
be available on the Beall's website at
www.beallsflorida.com.

Mrs. Long said she decided not to
simply take up the McCain signs and
put up a new Obama sign for several
reasons.
For one thing, she wanted the com-
munity to know what happened. For
another, she was thinking of her chil-
dren and trying to give them a sense of
empowerment by taking a proactive
approach to the problem. Her 10-year-
old daughter, Faith, helped, color in
the signs. Her twin sons, 15-year-old
Darius and Darion Pollock, helped put
the signs in the ground.
Mrs. Long said her son, Darion,
was devastated by the actions of .
Monday night.
"When I first put up the Obama
sign, I had put it closer to the porch.

Jackson County Chamber of'
Commerce President Art Kimbrough
said he will make a last ditch effort to
convince Beall's to stay.
"I had an opportunity to meet a
Beall's representative at a recent
event, and I asked him if there was
anything we as a community could do
to help them stay here. He told me
he'd talk' to the decision-maker, and
I'm planning to try and have some
conversation with him about it,"
Kimbrough said.
But even if the store closes as
planned, Kimbrough said that's &no
reason to throw in the towel on the
shopping center that has lost a hand-
ful of its retail tenants in the past few
years. There's been a steady migra-.
tion CVS pharmacy recently built

He told me, 'Mom, you act like you're
trying to hide it, put it where it can be
seen.' So I did that. He has faith in the
concept of freedom of choice, and he
was shaken by what happened," she
said. "I didn't feel like I could just let
this go and act like nothing happened.
It's as much for them as for me that I
decided to make a statement."
Mrs. Long said her sign about a
cross .burning was not meant as an
accusation of ill will against everyone
in Jackson County, but rather as a
wake-up call to the community.
"Are we as Jackson Countians
going to allow this kind of thing to
happen, or are we going to try to put a
stop to it?," she said. "I feel like some-

The victim told officers that he was eastbound on Clay
Street and was struck by a burgundy Chevrolet car traveling
west on Clay St. at a high rate of speed, according to MPD.
According to MPD, the burgundy vehicle did not stop after
the crash, but was located moments later abandoned on Hawk'
Street. "Both vehicles sustained heavy damages in the crash,
and both were disabled," according to a news release from
MPD. Emergency medical services were provided by
Jackson County Fire Rescue to the victim, who complained
of neck pain, according to MPD. The driver of the burgundy

Kimbrough said he anticipates that
the old shopping center may undergo
a transition that could make it a viable
multi-use complex.
"The Chamber will always be there
to 'help the. owner find tenants,
whether we need to use our connec-
tions with industry, retail or other
avenues. The location is a good loca-
tion not only for retail but a variety of
uses. We could see a substantial tran-
sition. The old- strip-mall .model is
changing from its traditional use.
Maybe there will be more office

sage, and I feel like the community
needs to send a message to those who
would do something like this that
we don't approve, that we're not
going to tolerate this."
