Man robbed by those he helped

BY DEBORAH BUCKHALTER
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
Thanks to an experience he had
Sunday evening, a local man may see a
grain of truth in the old saying "no good
deed goes unpunished."
Marianna resident Thomas Keith
Buckley, 27, gave two men a lift to the
grocery store that day and was held up
at gunpoint for his trouble.
Two young black men approached
Buckley near 'Peterson's Store on
Carter's Mill Road around 6:45 p.m. and
asked for a ride to the Grocery Outlet,

according to Capt. Bill Bryant- of the
Marianna Police Department.
Buckley obliged, and the trouble
began after he pulled off of Oates Street
into the back parking lot of the grocery
store. At that point, Bryant said, one of
the riders put a gun to Buckley's head
and demanded his wallet.
After one of them grabbed the billfold,
which contained approximately $380,
the two got out of the victim's car and
ran away toward Kelson Avenue.
Bryant said police believe the men
involved in the hold-up may also be'
associated with a purse-snatching on

Carter's Mill Road one week earlier.
In that case, 46-year-old victim, Mary
Ann Jones reported that a young black
man pushed her down as she walked
along Carter's. Mill Road on Sunday,
Sept. 28. She rolled 6ver'ahd'tried to get
up run, Bryant said, but the assailant was
holding onto her purse. Jones then
released the purse, got up and ran. She
said she saw a second young.black man
standing with the assailant when she
looked back.
The tan purse contained about $2 in
change, a portable CD player, Jones' dri-
ver's license and other items, police

said.
Bryant said the descriptions of the
suspects in the armed robbery appear to
match those of the suspects in the purse-
snatching.
Mariannapolice are warning the pub-
lic to be especially careful in the wake of
the armed robbery and purse snatching,
as well as a rash of car burglaries in the
area of Eighth Street.
With the Christmas shopping season
drawing near, the incidence of theft is
not likely to slow anytime soon, so
police are urging people to take extra
precautions.

Florida's Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) prepared a

Fay came to live at:Sunland in 1987, and officials 'say he had some
behavioral issues at first.

There was no peeling paint on any

or the "Cliff Hanger" or the "Silver
Streak" or the other dozen-plus rides
lining the midway. Their finishes are
carefully maintained on. a regular
basis by the Myers family, working
from their headquarters near Tampa.
There's also a traveling parts house
among the Myers caravan as it moves
from town to town. Most recently,'
Myers worked the fair in Panama
City, and erected about half the rides
they'd used there in Marianna. Pope
said the demand drives the decision
about how many to put up in a given
venue. He hopes the crowd in
Marianna will merit an increase in
the fairway hardware next year if
Myers comes back again. He said
he'd been disappointed in the 2006
and 2007 totals and that a couple of
bad-weather years didn't help mat-
ters. He said he hopes that the near-
perfect early autumn temperatures
and clear skies will turn the tide this
year.
Just as the rides looked remarkably
well-maintained, the food concession

booths scattered throughout the mid-
way were so clean they' looked new,
and were well-equipped to serve up
all the traditional fair fare, from can-
died apples to cotton candy, from
corn dogs and burgers to funnel cakes
and freeze pops.
As for ethical considerations in
gaming, Pope said that most of the
games on his midway are set up to
assure that players get at least a small
prize. There's a sign on each booth
where that's the rule, he said.
The ethics extend to personal lives
on the midway circuit, he said.
There are husband-wife teams, and
their children often join the traveling
show when they're out of school for
summer, he said. Most of them eager-
ly find a summer job in the show,
whether it's picking up trash or
retrieving game balls.
Pope is a third-generation carnival
man, having worked for his father's
and grandfather's outfits before join-
ing the Myers tour.
"I think every friend I ever had
worked for my father at one time or
another," he said in-recalling the sum-
mer jobs his buddies found in his
dad's show.
