BY DUSTIN KENT
FLORIDAN SPORTS EDITOR
In what has become a
disturbing trend for the
Grand Ridge Indians foot-
ball team, one play has,
again, been the difference
between victory and defeat.
Grand Ridge lost its
fourth game of the season,
the second by just two
points, Tuesday at home
against Graceville by the
score of 14-12.
Three of the Indians'
four losses have come by a
grand total of 10 points,
with losses on failed 2-
point conversions coming
to Liberty County and a 6-
point loss on a last-second
:touchdown. coming ,to
"We've had three tough'
losses," Grand Ridge coach
Art Porep said. "We just
can't seem to win a close
'On Tuesday, it was
Grand Ridge that led 6-0 at'
halftime and 12-8 after
three quarters, but the
Indians couldn't quite close
the door on the Tigers.
A Clay Jenkins .touch-
down run, followed by a
Rasheed Campbell 2-point
conversion, gave the Tigers
an 8-6 lead in the third
period before Grand
Ridge's Joseph Boyd's 20-
yard run put the Indians
back on top.
However, like the first
time GRMS found the end-
zone on a Delontre Keys

from 2 yards out, with five
minutes to play.

they were stopped a yard
short on a fourth-down
play, turning the ball back
over to the Tigers, who ran
the clock out.
"We were better than
Graceville. That's just my
opinion," Porep said of his
team. "It just didn't show
up in the score. I think we
kind of took them lightly,
the. players did. We didn't
play like we were capable.
"We felt like we were a
touchdown or two better,
but they kept it close,
pulled it out and we didn't.
That was it."
The Tigers moved to-3-1
on the season for second-
year coach.Travis Miller,
who said he was impressed
by the resolve his team'
showed after trailing at
halftime and in the fourth..
"I thought we played '
good and did a good job of
getting back in it," Miller
said. "We did a good job of
fighting back against
Grand Ridge, who are a lot
better than what their
record shows. They've got
a good football team. I'm

having trouble, stopping
them on 'defense, but we

For the Tigers, who have
one game remaining on the
season against Vernon Oct.
7, this year has been almost
a complete reversal from
last season when the team
went 1-3 in Miller's first
year at the helm.
"It's been a good sea-
s:f ," "the coach said.
"We've had a good year. I
knew we had some good
players coming in, but also
some new faces and I did-

little guys, but they're
fighters. They show up and

it's been a really good year;
These are really coachable
guys. It's'been enjoyable."
For the Indians, this sea-
son has been more about
what could have been.
"We could be 4-1 right
now" Porep said. "We lost
three close games by a total
of 10 points. That's our
season in a nutshell."
Grand Ridge has a
chance to end the season on
a high note, however, if it
can beat undefeated
B.lountstown Oct. 7 in
"We've got,a chance to
maybe upset them," Porep
said. "I think we can play
with them and possibly
beat them. We played
Liberty County, who they

easily could've won our
game with them."

hurt, it would've put (the offense)
in a bind. Now, there's more depth
and two or three other kids who
can go in there. You won't replace
Bradley, but those other kids are
not that far off either."
Whatever the outcome, Martin
said the game will have a positive,
long-term impact onri his team.
"(Marianna) will make us better
down the road," the coach said.
"We're a young, inexperienced
team. We've only got six seniors,
so we'll have to go through some
bumps in the road. Each week
we've gotten a little bit better, but
we know we've got a challenge
ahead of us (tonight)."
Armstrong said that the
Bulldogs coaching staff is facing
a unique challenge of their own.
"Coach Martin is very familiar
with us. They're more familiar
with us than we are with them,"
the coach said. "I think that gives.
(Martin) an advantage. He knows
exactly what we're going to do.
So we've got to go out there and
play better than the last time we
In. Marianna's last game, the
Bulldogs had to come up with a
95-yard drive in the closing min-
utes of the game to take a 22-21
win over Episcopal in
Jacksonville Sept. 26.
Armstrong said he wasn't
happy with how his team played
much of the night but was
impressed by his team's ability to
gut out a tough win so far away
"It was a great way to win a
game," the coach said. "We had to,
fight the whole way. We never led
until the last drive. The kids kept
fighting and kept playing. The
defense kept us in it and the
offense sucked it up with eight
minutes left and drove it 95 yards
to win. I think that proves that
our kids will fight and play and
find a way to get it done. I hope.
that will give us- 'some momen-
The Bulldogs did make their
share 'of mistakes against,
Episcopal, fumbling the ball
inside the 10-yard line, giving up
a long kickoff return touchdown
and allowing. Episcopal's offense
to move the ball with great suc-
cess in the first half.
That and the fact that the
Bulldogs are hosting a highly-
motivated team the week before
the biggest MHS game of the sea-
son is enough to make Armstrong
wary of just how much intensity
his team will play with tonight.
"We've got some business to
take care of (tonight)," Armstrong
said. "We have'to go out there and
play better and harder than we did
last Friday night.
"(Holmes County) is like a lot
of our opponents, in that a lot of
people come in here and it's a big
game, it's a chance to whip
Marianna. We've got to be pre-
pared for that and execute on both
sides of the ball and be ready to
play as hard as we can play."
While Armstrong is trying to
keep his team on the right track,
Martin is just trying to get his
, The coach said that early-sea-
son struggles weren't completely
unexpected, but it doesn't make
losing any easier.
"It's not a total surprise because
you've got to crawl before you
can walk," Martin said. "It's just
been a learning experience. But
nobody wants to win more than I
do. It's not going to be an
overnight thing, but I do see light
at the end of the tunnel. It has
been one of the toughest chal-
lenges that I've faced in my
coaching career, but I'm commit-
ted to turning it around and the
kids we have are committed to
"Coach Armstrong and his, staff
do such a good job. I tell our kids
that when you watch MHS (on
film), I hope that we're some-
where close to where they're at a
year from now."

Most consumers have a choice as to where they spend
their money, from "big box" or national stores to locally
based businesses. The thrust of this column is to encour-
age you to not only support local businesses, but also to
become a raving fan for your local firms. So many con-
sumers believe that there is little difference between mak-
ing purchases at a local business and at a chain store. This.
is simply not true. Buying locally supports your commu-
nity in more ways than just the revenues generated by the
sale of the product or service.
Numerous studies show that buying local is better for a
community. In 2004, the Andersonville Development
Corporation studied the. Andersonville neighborhood,
which is located on Chicago's north side. What they found
was that local businesses generated 70% more local eco-
nomic impact per square foot than "big box" stores. They
also found that each $100 spent on local businesses creat-,
ed $68 in additional economic benefits.. With "big box"
stores, the additional local impact was only $43.
Another important way that local businesses contribute
to their community is through their support of non-profits.
Local small businesses exceed chain stores in their support
of local non-profits by a factor of 250%. When I chaired
and served on the boards of various non-profits, we
focused on raising local funds, because it was almost
impossible to find a person in a "big box" store who want-
ed to understand our local issues and contribute financial-
ly. In fact, when I went to the store managers to talk about
some type of support for local non-profits, they just about
always said that they had no control over this and that cor-
porate made all of these decisions.
In addition, in my experience as well as in the experi-
ences of so many others the overall service at local busi-
nesses is so much better than that of bigger national cor-'
porations. Whenever I have had a problem with a national
store, it has been so difficult to deal with. So many people
have told me horror stories about being unable to speak to
anyone about the significant problem they were having
with a national store. Dealing with local stores is so much
easier. If I have a problem at a local business, I know I can
go right to the owner and get it remedied. This is certain-
ly not the case at "big box" stores.
Yet another benefit of, buying locally is that local mer-
chants must support their local customers' needs.' While
"big b6x" stores have national marketing plans that they
implement in all of their stores, local merchants must lis-
ten to their local customers and give them what they want.
Personally, I know that I do not wan" to live in a com-
munity that looks like all the others. By supporting and
encouraging the local businesses that make .our area so
special, we nurture the uniqueness of our community, set-
ting it apart from the rest. Local businesses are your neigh-
bors and community supporters. Support local firms by
voting for them through your purchases.
Now go out and make sure that you are supporting your
local businesses, because by doing so, you are supporting
your community in so many ways. You can do this!
BY BRUCE WILLIAMS without you. While your ex
may be entitled to some
credit because it was devel-
oped during your marriage,
the reality is that you are not
going to find a buyer at that
price. I think your attorney
can negotiate that number
DEAR BRUCE: My hus-
band and I are in our mid-
70s. We want to protect our
home from the state in the
event either of us should be
sent to a nursing home. We
want to put the house in a
trust in our children's names.
We trust our children com-
pletely and know they would
not defraud us. A lawyer
friend suggested that the
spouses of each child sign a
release form, stating they
would not try to collect in
the event of divorce. Our
home is our main asset. My
husband is in favor of this
proposal, but I am concerned
about losing control of my
home. Reader, via e-mail
DEAR READER: Do
you want to collect Medicaid
and then try to defraud the
government so that you can
leave an estate to your chil-
dren? The fact is that a home
cannot be sold or foreclosed
until both husband and wife
are no longer alive. The
appropriate agencies would
then try to recapture some of
their investment. Why
should taxpayers pay to pro-
tect an inheritance?
That said, if you are going
to proceed with this 'issue,
your attorney offered good
advice. If you put the home
in your kids' names -and
there is a divorce, their
. spouses would have an inter-
est. Should your offspring
pass away, this could further
complicate the ownership of
your home. In my opinion,
don't play that game. If you
insist on doing this, let your
attorney guide you.

DEAR BRUCE: We own
four acres of property on
which our house is situated.
Several of the acres have
been kept in their natural
state and, as a consequence,
some kids have taken to rid-
ing their all-terrain vehicles
on the property. I don't care,
but my wife is getting very
upset. She thinks if they get
injured on our property,
we're on the hook. I don't
think it's such a big deal. -
Reader in Nevada
DEAR READER: Your
wife is absolutely correct.
Letting kids run anything on
your property is an invitation
for trouble; there is no ques-
tion about it. If one of those
kids is injured, even as a
result of just screwing
around, you are very much
on the hook. If I were you, I
would do everything in my
power to get them off the
property. It's not that you.
want to be an ogre, but you
are flirting with losing
everything you have if a seri-
ous accident occurs.
DEAR BRUCE: I am in
the middle of a divorce. I
built a consulting business
from scratch, and I am the'
sole employee. Her attorney
says the business is worth
$800,000, with $150,000
annual gross revenue. Since
I am the only employee and
there is no business without
me, how do you put a value
on something like this? -.
B.O., via e-mail
DEAR B.O.: With a gross
of only $150,000 less
expenses, I cannot imagine
where the $800,000 estimate
comes from. Since you are
the only employee, this is a
business that has, no value
