sexual battery

on a child
FLORIDAN STAFF REPORT
On Thursday. U.S. NMarhsalls in Texas arrested a Chipley man
wanted for sexual batter on a child under the age of 12.
The investigation of Ramon Del Sol Hemandez began on June
12, which subsequently led Chipley police
Department to obtain a warrant for Hernandez's
arrest' according to CPD.
"Hernandez fled the Chipley area before his
,arrest warrant could be served. We tracked
Hemandez to the Miami area with the assistance
of the United States Marshals Service Violent
Fugitive Task Force," said the CPD report.
According to the CPD, Hernandez remained
in the South Florida arpa for a few weeks before Ramon Del
he apparently fled to Mexico. Sol Hernandez
"Around midnight on September 22, the
Chipley Police Department received information that Hernandez
was traveling by bus in Mexico in an attempt to re-enter the
United States through south Texas. Shortly after lunch on the 23rd
we were able to. ascertain Hemandez exact location in
.Brownsville, Texas which led to his arrest without incident by the
U. S. Marshals Service," said the CPD report.

FDOC fires

probation officer

BY KATE McCARDELL
FLORIDAN STAFF REPORT
A state probation officer
arrested :on drug-related
charges last month is no
longer employed with the
Florida Department of
Corrections.
FDOC Director of
Communications Gretl
Plessinger said Ryder
Anthony Laramore's employ-
ment was terminated the day
after his arrest in the form of
an "extraordinary dismissal.".
A Marianna resident,
Laramore served as a state
probation officer for the last
17 years.
He was arrested by the Bay
County, Sheriff's Office on
Wednesday, Sept. 24, and
charged with DUI, possession
'of. a controlled substance
(methamphetamine), posses-
sion of marijuana less than 20
grams, and possession of drug
paraphe.rnalia.. according- to

the Bay County Jail.
Later that day, Laramore
made his first appearance
before a judge and was grant-
ed a conditional release.
A first arraignment in the
case is set for Oct. 23, accord-
ing to Bay County Court
records. Laramore's legal rep-
resentation is currently listed
as "self' in those records.
FDOC representatives ini-
tially reported, that
Laramore's employment with
the department was not
affected by the incident,
pending the results of a crim-
inal case.
The circumstances of the
arrest, however, and the evi-
dence introduced early on in
the. case contributed to
grounds for an extraordinary
dismissal, said Plessinger.
"With these types of
charges, We don't want them
supervising another' offend-
er," said Plessinger.

Optimists welcome March for

Babies ambassador family.

SPECIAL TO THE FLORIDAN
The Optimist Club of
Jackson County had the
pleasure of having David
and Crickett Griffin at their
meeting this month as guest
speakers. David is now 2
years old and like any other
active 2-year-old, enjoys
playing with his 8-month-
old brother, Samuel.
Every year, half a million
babies in the U.S. are born
prematurely. Premature
birth is the leading cause of
newborn death and many
life long disabilities. The
funds raised by March for
Babies support research that
saves babies' lives. The mis-
sion of March of Dimes is
to improve the health of
babies by preventing birth,
defects, premature birth and
infant mortality.
This is the month for
March for Babies and this
year the ambassador family
for the March is the Griffin
family from Greenwood.
David Bowen Griffin was'
born at Tallahassee Memorial
Hospital and he was born at
26 weeks. He was one pound,
seven ounces and was 12
inches long.
Much of the technology
that aided Griffin in his
development during the
three months he spent in the
hospital came about
through research funded by
the March of Dimes. David
is the son of Benjamin and
Crickett Griffin. David and
his family at the Citizen
Lodge weekend for the
March for Babies and tried
to out walk everyone.

BY DUSTIN KENT

After suffering three straight.
losses, the Cottondale Hornets
will try to get back on the win-
ning track Friday against the
South Walton Seahawks.
* The game will mark the third
consecutive on the road for the
Hornets (1-3, 0-1 in District 1-1B
play), who have not won since
their season-opening victory over
Sneads.
. Since its 32-24 win over the
Pirates, Cottondale has fallen 40-
6 to Liberty County, 26-14 to
Wewahitchka and, most recently,
46-0 to FAMU in Tallahassee.
The first two losses featured a
host of Hornet errors, though the
Baby Rattlers simply proved too
big and fast.
Cottondale coach Mike Melvin
said there wasn't much to be
taken from the Sept. 25 defeat.
"You just take those lumps and
go on about it," the Hornets
coach said Wednesday. "(FAMU)

The Marianna Middle
School Bullpups football
team went into Tuesday
night's matchup against
another undefeated team,
the Riversprings Bears
from Wakulla.
The pressure was to
defend what two previous
teams had done: go unde-
feated for Bullpups coach
Hunter Nolen.
Since Nolen took over
as the athletic director
and head football coach,
his teams had not suf-
fered a loss before
Tuesday night.
The 30-8 loss, the first
after 17 straight wins,
was not indicative of the

defense to start the game.
Riversprings was kept
off the board and the
Bullpups' offense took
the field and drove the
distance, culminating in a
36-yard touchdown run
by Quayshawn Johnson.
Micah Reed converted
on the extra point and the
Bullpups had an early 8-0
lead.

James Mack.
were arrested a
day earlier
after the two
met to buy
cocaine from a
Travis Henry person who
was cooperat-
ing with authorities,'according to
an arrest warrant affidavit.
Mack and Henry were in fed-
eral custody on suspicion of
knowingly and intentionally
conspiring to distribute and pos-
sess with intent to distribute
cocaine. They were advised of
charges Wednesday. A prelimi-
nary hearing and detention hear-
ing were scheduled for Monday.
It was not immediately known
whether Mack had an attorney.
Henry's attorney, Harvey
Steinberg, and his agent did not
immediately return phone mes-
sages seeking comment.
The case has its roots, in
Montana, where a trooper and
DEA agent stopped a car that
was carrying six pounds of mar-
ijuana and about three kilograms
of cocaine on Sept. 16, the affi-
davit said. A passenger in the
car, whose name was not. dis-
closed in the affidavit, told
authorities Mack and Henry had
supplied him with the drugs,
which he was supposed to deliv-
er to customers in Billings. The
man said he was supposed to be
paid $5,000 for delivering the
drugs and transporting about
$63,600 in sales proceeds to
Henry, according to the affidavit.
The affidavit indicated that
separately, the passenger and
another customer in Billings
already owed Henry about
$40,000 in drug proceeds. The
passenger told authorities Henry
had threatened him and his fam-
ily over the debt.
The passenger agreed to coop-
erate with authorities and set up
a drug deal Tuesday with Henry
that led to the arrests of Mack
and Henry, the affidavit said.
Broncos coach Mike
Shanahan declined comment
Wednesday, saying it wouldn't
be fair to say anything until he
knew the facts of the case.

Game 1 of the National League division
series Wednesday in Philadelphia. Rob

PHILADELPHIA Cole. Hamels put
Philadelphia in position to win, then Brad
Lidge barely hung on. Behind their top two
arms, the Phillies grabbed their first postsea-
son victory in 15 years.
Hamels pitched eight brilliant innings,
Lidge escaped a ninth-inning jam and
Philadelphia took advantage of Mike
Cameron's miscue in center field for a 3-1
win over Milwaukee in their playoff opener
Wednesday.
Chase Utley's two-run double slipped out
of Cameron's glove in the third, helping the

Phillies take a 3-0 lead. Lidge allowed a run
in the ninth but struck out Corey Hart with
runners at second and third to end it. .
Game 2 in the best-of-five series is
Thursday, with ace CC Sabathia going to the
mound for the wild-card Brewers on three
days' rest for the fourth consecutive start.
Brett Myers pitches for the Phillies.
It'll be tough for anyone to match Hamels'
superb performance The 24-year-old lefty
retired the first 14 batters and allowed two.
hits, striking out nine.
Lidge, 41-for-41 in 'save chances during
the season, pitched 6ut of trouble in a shaky
ninth. The Brewers had the tying run at the
plate when Prince Fielder fanned for the sec-
ond out. After J.J. Hardy walked to put two
runners on, they. advanced on a wild pitch.
But Hart struck out swinging to end it.
Hamels baffled the fastball-hitting
Brewers with his dazzling changeup, helping
the Phillies earn their first postseason win
since the 1993 World Series against Toronto.
The NL East champions were swept out of
the first round by the surging Colorado
Rockies last year. Hamels lost the opener of
that series.
Making his second start since returning
from surgery for a torn knee ligament,
Milwaukee's Yovani Gallardo got rattled
after his defense fell apart in the third.
The 22-year-old, righty allowed three.
unearned runs and three hits in four innings,
walking five. Gallardo became the second
pitcher in major league history to start a
postseason game without recording a win
that year. He pitched in three games before
' he injured his right knee on May 1 and had a'
1.88 ERA to go with four no-decisions.
Carlos Ruiz started Philadelphia's third
inning with a single. Hamels then bunted
hard to third baseman Bill Hall, who bob-
bled the ball, costing him a chance to get
Ruiz at second. Second baseman Rickie
Weeks dropped Hall's throw to first for an'
error.
Gallardo almost worked out of the jam,
though. He retired Jimmy Rollins on a shal-
low fly and struck out Jayson Werth. But

Utley ripped a liner through a swirling wind
to- center. Cameron took a poor route, raced
back and reached up for a backhanded catch
only to have the ball bounce out of his glove.
Both runners scored on Utley's double for
a 2-0 lead. A three-time Gold Glove winner,
Cameron usually makes that play look rou-
tine. Gallardo intentionally walked Ryan
Howard and then walked Pat Burrell' to load
the bases. Gallardo walked Shane Victorino
to force in another run, before retiring Pedro
Feliz on a fly to center.
Hamels, who didn't get much run support
as he went 14-10 in the regular season, did-
n't need any more. The Phillies had just four
hits.
Hart lined a single to right on an 0-2 pitch
with two outs in the fifth for Milwaukee's
first hit. Hamels pitched out of his, only jam
in the sixth. Craig Counsell singled with one
out and Cameron walked. But Hamels
fanned Hall on a down-and-away changeup
and got Ryan.Braun to pop out.
A sellout crowd of 45,929 at Citizens
Bank Park withstood a steady rain for most
of the game, waved their "Fightin' Phils"
rally towels and savored a rare playoff victo-
ry. .
This championship-starved city hasn't cel-
ebrated a title since the NBA's 76ers won it
all in 1983.
The Brewers, in the postseason for the
first time in 26 years,. now turn to Sabathia.
The burly left-hander almost single-handed-
ly carried Milwaukee intd the playoffs,
going 11-2 with a 1.65 ERA aftdr he was
acquired July 7 from Cleveland. But
Sabathia is just 2-2 with a 7.17 ERA in four
postseason starts.
The Brewers haven't fared well in Philly
this year. They were swept in a four-game
series here three weeks ago. Manager Ned
Yost was fired with 12 games remaining
after that series and third-base coach Dale
Sveum took over.
Milwaukee entered September with a 5V2-
game lead in the wild-card standings, but
didn't clinch a spot until the New York Mets
lost to Florida on the final day of the season.
