burglaries
in Marianna
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
The Marianna Police
Department is actively inves-
tigating a senes of residential
and vehicle burglaries within
the city of Marianna.'
According to the MPD, in
many of those vehicle burgla-
ries the vehicles were left
unsecured:.
"Leaving your vehicle
unsecured only creates
opportunity for the would-be
burglar. Please, everyone
secure your vehicles," read a ,
news release from MPD. -
The report also said that
many of the burglary victims
failed to report the incidents
in a timely manner, hindering
law enforcement investiga-'

"Because, as often is the
case, evidence is developed
in a series of crimes and
become sufficient enough to
identify and prosecute a sus-
pect," said the report.

DCA awards $750,000 to county for water plant

adding 100 jobs, $25M company investment

SPECIAL TO THE FLORIDAN
The Florida Department
of Community Affairs has
awarded $750,000 to
Jackson County for an eco-
nomic development project
generating up to 100 new
jobs and a $25 million pri-
vate-sector investment,
DCA Secretary Tom
Pelham announced.
Ice River Springs USA,
Inc. will build and operate
a new water bottling plant
at the Marianna Industrial
Park on State Road 71. A
portion of the jobs will be
made available to residents
from low-to-moderate
income households.
"Economic development

projects such as this and
the type of jobs they gener-
ate -- are sorely needed in
Jackson and other smaller
rural counties," said
Florida Department of
Community Affairs
Secretary Tom Pelham
who is a native of neigh-
boring Calhoun County.
"In these difficult econom-
ic times, I am delighted
that this will help families
with new, well-paying jobs
even above the minimum
wage," he added.
The Community
Development Block Grant
funds will be used by the
county for access road con-
struction suitable for large
semi-tractor trailer vehi-

cles, water well upgrades,
and wastewater, treatment
infrastructure in and
around the Industrial Park.
The company will spend at
least $1.5 million on the
bottling plant building and
an estimated $25 million
total investment. The
grant-funded portion of the
work also will improve the
industrial park's overall
attractiveness for other
commercial and industrial
development on nearby
parcels. A minimum of 16
jobs will create opportuni-
ty for people from low-to-
moderate income families.
Enterprise Florida is also

Dear Editor, support and pride in.
Jackson Hopital

We would like to express
our heart felt thanks to all
those who donated money to
help Bill get the treatments he
needed. We would also like to
thank all of you who have kept
us in your prayers. It has truly
touched our hearts to know
that so many people care. We
extend a special thanks to the
Ted Walt VFW Post 12046
and Ladies Aux. without all of
you none of this would have
been possible. We are in
Arizona and Bill has had more
than 17 treatments so far. We
will give updates on Bill's
progress as we go along. May
God bless each and everyone
of you!
With Sincere Thanks,

Dear editor;

Recently my mother, Elsie
Glover, became gravely ill
with what would later be diag-
nosed as ischemic bowel dis-
ease. When the unbearable
pain began, we immediately
took her to Jackson Hospital.
My mother was visiting; she
was not a resident of Jackson
County and had never been in
our hospital. From the time
she entered the door, she was
treated with the utmost
respect.
She was in triage almost
immediately, and the nurses,
along with Dr. Herring began
treatment to relieve, her pain

and determine the cause.
Although she was seen by sev-
etal health care professionals,
no one ever treated her like an
aged lady with many com-
plaints.
When she did not improve,
she was hospitalized and Dr.
Gay became our doctor. He
saw her several times within
the next two days, and did
everything medically possible
for her.
Dr. Gay made many
attempts to get her transferred
to Tallahassee, where she
could be treated by her own
doctors, but before that could
be accomplished, her situation
became an emergency, and
surgery was mandatory.
Dr. Chai Arunakul had seen
her earlier and came back to
the hospital, calling in his sur-
gery team to perform emer-
gency surgery at 9:30 that
night.
Although the post-operative

report was bleak, and we were
distraught, he offered us some
hope, and we were transferred
to Tallahassee the next day for
further treatment.
Mom had a heart attack in
transfer and did not recover
from her illness. She passed
away a week later.
Although our hearts are
heavy, we know she had the
best medical care possible.
Our family is so grateful to the
great staff, caring and capable
nurses, and wonderful doctors
at Jackson Hospital. They
treated our mother with care
and dignity, and made losing
her a little easier to bear.
Jackson County should be
proud to support our local hos-
pital.

Staying alive

Pirates will try to keep their district

hopes alive in Jay against 1-2 Royals

BY DUSTIN KENT
FLORIDAN SPORTS EDITOR
The Sneads Pirates will hit the road
Friday in search of renewed playoff hopes
when they take on the Jay Royals.
After getting shut out 24-0 by West
Gadsden in their home opener Sept. 26,
the Pirates will try to move to 2-1 in
District 1-1A play with a win Friday.
At 1-1 in a loaded district with another
road game at Port St. Joe the following
week, Friday's game takes on an even
greater significance for the Pirates.
"The big thing I'm telling the kids is that
we're still in the hunt," Sneads coach Don
Dowling said Tuesday. "We're just 1-1 in
district, so if we get a win, we're good to
go.
"We may not be at the top (of the district
standings), but we would be in the hunt.
To win the district, we would have to have
help, but it's a long season. You look at the
scores and see that any given team can win
and any given team can lose every week..
This is a big one."
The good news for the Pirates is that the
Royals, according to Dowling, have much
more in common with Sneads than they do
with the speedy West Gadsden club that
gave the Pirates fits.
"Jay is one of those teams that plays in
between the tackles, which suits us a lot
better," the Pirates coach said. "Jay has
always been known as a team that will hit
you in the mouth.
"You've got to be able to stop what they
do because they're going to do what they

do. But if you can stand with them toe-to-
-toe, you'll be alright."
In their last game, the Pirates defense
had difficulty containing the West
Gadsden playmakers and the Sneads
offense had even more difficulty finding
open space against a swarming Panthers
defense;
The Pirates were outgained 340 yards to
85 for the game.
Sneads will need a much better offen-
sive output Friday.
"We've got to get our offense back on
track," Dowling said. "West Gadsden
basically shut down everything we tried.
We've got to get back to running in'
between the tackles like we can do, then
maybe run some play action and complete
some passes. Everything we tried ,to do.
didn't work right for us."
Dowling said the plan was to simplify
the playbook somewhat, though the coach
said that his team won't face many defens-

es like West Gadsden this season.
"To be honest, most of it was West
Gadsden," the coach said when assessing
responsibility for the Pirates' offensive
struggles. "They can play some defense. It

looked like they had 14 out there. You
