Pirates p re p
BY DUSTIN KENT
FLORIDAN SPORTS EDITOR
The Sneads Pirates (1-1, 1-0)
will look to move to 2-0 in
District 1-1A play tonight when
they play host to the West
Gadsden Panthers (1-2) at 7 p.m.
The Pirates, who notched their
first win of the season against
district foe Franklin County Sept.
19, will take a step up in compe-
tition tonight against a talented
Panthers team that is far tougher,
than their record would indicate.
West Gadsden's two losses
came at the hands of 5A
Niceville and 4A Crestview,
which. narrowly defeated the
Panthers 5-3 Sept. 19.
"Their losses have come to
some big schools," Sneads coach
Don Dowling said of the
Panthers. "They're playing some
big schools and they held
Crestview to five points, which is

The Pirates lost 30-26 to West
Gadsden last season and have
lost three of the last four meet-
ings with the Panthers by a
touchdown or less.
Dowling said that's typically
the way it goes in a series
between teams so familiar with
"It is a big rivalry. It's as big as
Marianna and Chipley or
Marianna, and Walton," the for-
mer MHS coach said. "I think it's
always close, kind of like the
Sneads/Cottondale rivalry. The
kids know each other, they're
talking to one another already.
It's just good because it's in dis-
trict and such a big rivalry. It
would be a huge win for us."
.A 2-0 start in a very tough dis-
trict would be a tremendous,
boost for the Pirates, who have to

Making things more daunt-
ing for .the Pirates is the fact
that both Davis and fellow
running back Mark Lawson
are nursing high ankle sprains.
Both will play tonight,
though Dowling said neither
would be at 100 percent.
"We've done all the treat-
ments, icing and all that stuff,"
the coach said about Lawson
and Davis. "They're coming

But in a game like this, if a
player can go on the field and
make an impact, he will.
"It's one of those games
where you get in there and it's
a big crowd and everybody's
jacked up," Dowling said,
"but the team that flinches
first is usually the one who
gives up the big play. I just
