Fishermen rescued in Lake Seminole
in high winds
BY DEBORAH BUCKHALTER
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
Two Chattahoochee men were rescued
from Lake Seminole late Tuesday, several
hours after their boat capsized in high
The men were identified as 71-year-old
Roland Thomas Parramore and 62-year-
old Robert Lee Slaughter. They had gone
out fishing around 9 a.m., and were report-
ed missing by a family member three
hours after they failed to return home on
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission officers Alton Ranew and,
David Arnette found the men clinging to
the boat around 5 p.m., about a mile north
of Jim Woodruff Dam.
"Officer Ranew got up on his vehicle
with some field glasses and saw something
about two miles out from the landing that
didn't look right," said FWC spokesman
Stan Kirkland. "He and officer Arnette got
out there and went right to them."
Parramore and Slaughter were believed
to have been in the water nine hours.
' "They had just put down anchor that
morning when, they took a wave over the
rear of the vessel, which caused it to flip
and sink to a point," Kirkland said. "It did-
n't got to the bottom, and they were able to
hold on to it. They never saw another fish-
erman all day."
The men were brought to shore in
Sneads Park, above the dam, Kirkland
The men are expected to fully recover
from the experience, although Parramore
did show some early signs of hypothermia.
Both refused medical treatment and
returned home shortly after the rescue.
Arnette and Ranew helped family mem-
bers as they attempted to retrieve the 13-
foot, open hull jon boat.
Sneads Police Chief Burt McAlpin said
the men were wearing their life jackets, a
fact he said probably saved their lives.
"From being on Lake Seminole all my
life, I can tell you it can be dangerous in
the wind," McAlpin said. "If they hadn't
been wearing their life jackets, it might
have turned out different. An Olympic
swimmer couldn't tread water unaided for
eight hours. We're just glad that they're all
right. The water can get rough out there,
and they were just overcome by a wave.
"The lake is a lot of fun, but it has it's
hazards, and using good judgement is what
made it possible for them to be found and
New Main Street Director looks
forward to downtown projects
FL KATE Mc..CARDE .. LL .
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER ,.5'-*:
The City of Marianna.will wel-
come a new Main Street
Marianna director this Thursday.
Charlotte Brunner is clearly
excited about her new role as
director of the downtown redevel-
opment agency that was initiated
more than 10 years ago.
"Through' Main Street we've
got a thriving downtown thai's
beautiful and user-friendly. I am
so excited to be able to take on
this job of director," said
Brunner said she's lived in the
area for most of her life and was
most recently teaching at Florida
She said she holds a masters
degree in interior design, with
part of her specialty being his-
toric preservation, and has taught'
in FSU's interior design program
for the past eight years.
Part of her excitement, she
said, comes from already being
familiar with the program, having
served cn. the Mainu' Street
Marijmna advisory board for
about 10 years.
"It was an absolute passion,"
said Brunner. "When Main Street
first got started, we practically
had a ghost town with tattoo par-
lors and pawn shops here. I can
remember sitting in one of the
first meetings with the architects
and their conceptual drawings .of
what Marianna could be. I had
been a little skeptical:. But once
we got into the program and I
learned the four-point application
of design, economic festructur-
ing, promotion and organization,
I saw how beautifully this could
Brunner said. she saw the think-
ing become "very contagious."
"People in the community
became very excited. We got the
businesses back downtown and
all of the involvement just
screams community pride. I think
Main Street is an extremely vital
part of our downtown and our
community. It has brought us for-
* ward in so many ways," said
The new director said she looks
forward to the future 6f down-

meeting Thursday. Mark Skinner / Floridan
town Marianna, and hopes to
make Main Street Marianna even
more involved in downtown revi-
"I'm so excited. There are so'
many wonderful things we can do
as a community to breathe even
more life back into the area," said
Brunner hopes to bring back
some of the events that used to be
held downtown, such as outdoor
movie viewings and small festi-
"Also, we always have this
great Christmas parade. It's
amazing to me how many people
show up downtown. So, you have.
all those people down there, why
not take advantage of it by keep-
ing some of the downtown busi-
nesses open during the parade?
Why not have more food ven-
dors? Wouldn't it be great to get
Madison's or Gazebo or one of
the Mexican restaurants outside
selling things? Let's make this
more than just a parade," said
Brunner couldn't conceal her
enthusiasm for the farmer's mar-
ket pavilion that's planned for' the
future Performance Arts Park.
"Can you imagine all the great
things we'll be able to do there?
The possibilities are endless,"
She also has ideas for the 1902
First Bank Building on
McPherson Street. The city pur-
chased the historical building ear-
lier this year.
"We'd love to redo it as a
museum and get the grants need-
ed to preserve this building.
Hopefully we'll find the money
to make this a multi-use space. I
see us using it as a museum, get-
ting moveable walls and holding
art shows inside of it. There are
plenty of artists here in this town
and surrounding counties. It
could be a place for all types of
social gatherings," said Brunner.
"There's going to be lots of fun
things we can do. I've already
contacted Jonathan Fuqua with
the Mariana Arts. Festival. The
Arts Festival has earmarked
about $5,000 a year toward the
bank building. Now, I know that's
not a drop in the bucket, but it's a:
start to do maybe a feasibility
study on the building to find out
what needs to be done and get
prices on how to do it," said
Brunner also wants to get a
Web site up and running for the
Main Street program.
"It would be a way to talk to
everyone, get as much feedback
as we can. I want to know what
the community would like to see
happening downtown. I think
that's important," said Brunner.
But, first things first, said
Brunner she'll need to get the
Main Street advisory board and
volunteers, a very important fac-
tor, regrouped and ready to go.
,"And I'll be trying to get
myself organized and moved into
City Hall," she said.
Brunner officially starts her
role as director on Thursday, but
will be more ready and happy,
she said, to take calls from the
community the following week.
"I'll get my voicemail up and
running there as soon as I can.

The Bear Scouts contin-

study of rope tying tech-

taught scouts how to coil a
rope, throw it, and hit a
marker at least 20 feet away.
One end of the rope was
tied to a sock that had been
filled with sand for weight,
making the line heavy
.enough to carry it out when
thrown. Scouts practiced
facing the marker, swinging
the line toward it, and trying
the hit the mark.
This skill could come in
handy if scouts were ever to
find themselves needing to

drowning, for example.
Bear Scouts also learned

Scouts learned how to
