7 local

complaints

of gas price

gouging

reported
BY DEBORAH BUCKHALTER
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
Seven complaints about sus-
pected gasoline price gouging
related to Hurricane Ike involve
stations in Jackson County,
according to Victoria Heller, a
spokesman for state Attorney
General Bill McCollum.
Two of the calls were about
businesses in Sneads, two were
about stores in Marianna, one was
about a business in Cottondale,
one was about a Grand Ridge-area
station, and one was about a store
in Graceville.
According to Heller, these and
the other 1,834 complaints
received statewide are being
investigated. She explained how
the process begins.
"When someone calls in a com-
plaint, an investigator is assigned
and, if prices did in fact go up, the
station is asked to provide docu-
ments that show they paid more
for that delivery. If they can't,
then the investigator goes up the
corporate chain to see if there's a

Shoe shop owner

recovering from crash

BY DEBORAH BUCKHALTER
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
One of Marianna's oldest and best-
loved mom and pop establishments is
closed right now because owner
Dennis Creamer was seriously
injured in a traffic crash last month.
.But his many loyal customers \\ ill
be. glad- to know that Windham's
Shoe Store should be back in busi-
ness by the end of this month or early
October.
Sii.:ce hl Aug. 29 il01. Creamer
has been recuperating at his home in
Malone and says he feels like he
could be off the couch and back to
work in a couple of weeks.
Doctors tell him he'll probably
have to-walk with a cane. for the rest
of his life, but Creamer said he thinks
he'll eventually be able to get along
without one.
Either way, he's looking at a far
better prognosis than he faced three
weeks ago. Doctors at one point
thought they'd have to amputate his
Right foot because it was so severely
damaged.
His heel and ankle were shattered,
he said, but his physicians mended
the heel with "bone cement," a sub-
stance used to augment and weave
the heel back together: The ankle was
repaired with pins and plates.
People have told him he was lucky
to have survived at all, considering,
the shape his truck was in after the
crash.
It occurred on Old U.S. Road
around 5:30 p.m., on Aug. 29.
According to Florida Highway Patrol
reports, Creamer was driving north at
35 m.p.h., in a 1996 Isuzu pick-up
truck, when it was stuck by a truck
speeding-south on the same road.
The vehicles collided when the
other driver lost control of his 1995
Nissan, truck and spun into the north-
bound lane. ,
The other, driver, Bascom resident
Harmon Perkins, has been charged
with driving under the influence with
property damage and injurytfo anoth-
er, according to Florida Highway
Patrol reports.
Creamer's passenger, Cynthia
Smith, was also seriously injured in
the crash.
Creamer's niece, Smith also hap-
pens to be his only employee at the
-shoe store. She knows the pricing
and the stock, and is an important
second in command to her uncle.
With the two of them injured,
Creamer said there was nothing else.
to do but close the shop temporarily.
He is one of just a few shoe repair-
men in this region of the country, and
has customers who come from as far
away as Clearwater to have him fix
their shoes. He has many who live in
Tallahassee, Hosford and other dis-
tant places.
He also has some in places like
Chicago, Ill. who mail him their.
shoes for repair.
His customer in Chicago has a spe-

few weeks. Mark Skinner / Floridan

cial place in his heart the indit idual
has polio, and Creamner turns that
customer's left shoes into right ones
for the proper fit.
He said he's anxious to get back to
helping that customer and all the oth-
ers. In addition to repairing shoes, he
also fixes saddles and has even been
called upon to treat baseball gloves.
He bought the shop in 1984 from
original owner W.C. Windham, after
five years of working for and learn-
ing from him.
"I bought the shop because I like
people, and I like being able to keep
them in a good pair of shoes,"
Creamer said. "It makes me feel
good if I can keep somebody from
having to just throw away a quality
pair of shoes with a problem that can
be easily saved with some repairs.
Marianna is a great place for me to
do business. I've opened more shops
in other places from time to time, but

I never found the kind of customer
loyalt) that I have here. If you do a
good job, people stay with you."
Right now, he's confined to his liv-
ing room couch. He sleeps there, eats
there, and watches a lot more televi-
sion than usual. He and wife, Eunie,
are helping each other in their recu-
perative period she'd just been
through gall bladder surgery when
his crash occurred. '
"We're doing all right," Creamer
said. "We've got neighbors and rela-
tives that are standing ready to help
us if we need anything. We feel
blessed, because it could have turned
out different, and we just ask that
everybody pray for us. It's taking
some lime. but we're getting better.".
He said his niece is "bruised from
head to toe," but that she's also on the
road to recovery.

DMV offers

two-year

renewal option
FLORIDAN STAFF REPORT
The Florida Department of
Highway Safety and Motor
Vehicles wants people awai-eof its
new biennial renewal option avail-
able to drivers.
According to a news release
from the department, motorists
can now choose to renew tehir
vehilce registration for two years
at a time.
"Now, when a motorist chooses
the two year renewal, they will
receive a license plate decal with
an additional year added now choose to renew the
expiration date. For example, if
your expiration date is February
2008 and you request the two-year
renewal period, your new expira-
tion date will be January 2010,"
said the news release.
More than 490,239 customers
have taken advantage of the
option through August, according
to the news release.
The biennial registration also is
available online at
www.GoRenew.com.
"Thanks to the Legislature, our
residents now have the option to
save time by renewing only once
every two years, rather than each
year. Vehicle owners will still be
required- to renew their tags by
their birthdays, as usual, but those
who opt to renew for two years get
to skip a year," said Carl Ford,
Director of the Division of Motor
Vehicles.

Tigers try not

to overlook

Blue Devils

BY DUSTIN KENT
FLORIDAN SPORTS EDITOR
After nearly pulling off an upset
of a team they had been dominated
by in recent years, the Graceville
Tigers now turn their attention to a
team that always seems to make
them sweat it out to the last second.
Graceville (1-1), coming off a 36-
28 road loss to the Marianna
Bulldogs, will play host to Holmes
County (0-2) Friday in Graceville.
The Tigers have won the last two
meetings over the Blue Devils,
though by a combined four points.
GHS took a 30-27 victory last sea-
son and a 21-20 win in 2006, Todd
Wertenberger's first season as coach
of the Tigers.
With Holmes County's early-sea-
son struggles, losing to Jay 39-6 and*
Freeport 35-31, Wertenberger said
his team can't use the Blue Devils'
losses as an indicator of the kind of
challenge it will face Friday night.
"The kids probably think they'll
be a pushover, but they usually play
us tough," the coach said. "The film
we've got on them, they're not play-
ing too good, so it's hard to convince
the kids that they'll play against us
like it's the Super Bowl, but that's
what they always seem to do when
they play us."

Holmes County is coached by for-
mer Marianna assistant Carlan
Martin, who is in his first year as the
Blue Devils coach.
Wertenberger said that Holmes
County's system will be a familiar
one.
"They run the same offense and
defense that Marianna did, except a
little .bit slower," the coach said.
"They do -go into the shotgun and
throw the ball all over the place as
well,,which is coach Martin's signa-
ture.
"We'll do what we do best and
just see how we match up."
The Tigers should be brimming
with confidence after registering
blowout wins over Sneads (in the
preseason) and Liberty County and
going toe-to-toe with MHS.
It was a fine showing by
Graceville, marred only by the three
turnovers that helped contribute to
the loss.
"We would have liked to have
won the game, but I felt pretty good
about the way we finished the
game," Wertenberger said.
"Marianna's going to make some
good plays I won't take anything
away from them they're that
good. We're just upset about our
turnovers. That was us trNie to do
too much'.

Tigers
Continued From Page 1B
led to a drive-killing 21-yard
loss.
It's something that
Wertenberger, whose team is
using far more of an option
attack then the coach's first'
two bHS teams, said he is
working on correcting.
"We're definitely working
on that. When you run the
option, you have to be willing
to take what the defense gives
you," le said. "We were trying
to create, but you have to just
go with the flow, so to speak.
We just get back to basics,
doing what we're coached to
do."
While the Tigers' option
attack has looked like .a well-
oiled machine at times,
Wertenberger said that it is
still a learning process for his
team, so a few early-season
hiccups are to be expected.
"We ran it so well the first
two weeks, we thought we
