Man accused in fatal shooting held without bail

BY KATE McCARDELL
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
The Bay County man
accused of fatally shooting a
Cottondale woman and criti-
cally wounding two men
Thursday remained in the
Jackson County Correctional
Facility Saturday, held without
bail.
Paul Eric Fuder, 32, is
charged with one open count
of murder, according to
Jackson County "Sheriff John
McDaniel.
Fuder was apprehended

Thursday morning in the
woods by Neal's Landing off,
Highway 2, several hours after
he allegedly shot Brenda.
Marshall, Richard Jeffries and
his brother Kevin Fuder in the
intersection of Kynesville and
Standland Road.
Marshall was 'pronounced
dead at the scene. Jeffries and
Kevin Fuder were hospitalized
in critical condition.
On Friday, McDaniel said
there is a strong possibility
that neither of the nien will
survive their injuries.
The incident occurred short-

ly after 1:30 a.m. said
McDaniel, after a scuffle
between the parties at
Midget's Lounge subsequent-
ly led to the altercation on
Kynesville Road.
McDaniel said it. was possi-
ble that Marshall's 16-year-
old daughter, who was at the
incident, may have attempted
to rani the suspect's vehicle
after the shooting.
A witness that came upon
the bodies of Marshall and
-Jeffries said that Marshall
appeared to have been shot in
the chest and Jeffries appeared

to have been shot in the head.
Apparently, Kevin Fuder
was brought to the hospital by
his brother Paul, who obtained
a ride out of Marianna after
dropping his brother off at the
Jackson Hospital emergency
room and fled the area, said
McDaniel.
Witnesses positively identi-
fied Paul and Kevin Fuder as'
being involved in the incident
in Bay County, as well as at
the scene of the shootings on
Kynesville Road, according to
JCSO.
McDaniel said that Jeffries

cell phone was obtained by
one of the Fuders after a scuf-
fle at Midget's Bar.
He said that may be. part of
the reason the parties involved
met back up on Kynesville
Road.
McDaniel said it appeared
that Kevin Fuder was acci-
dently shot by his brother in
,the incident, and he suffered
more than one gun shot
wound.
The Fuders were raised in
Jackson County,. said
McDaniel.

FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
A 14-month investigation and a
swift trial ended ith a firm hand-
shake, between Scot Black and the
young man who pled guilty to vehic-
ular homicide in the death of Black's
daughter.
Gabriel Sanchez, 17, of Marianna.
was ajudicated as a juvenile and pled
guilty to one count of 'ehicluar
homicide Friday morning. His charge
stemmed from a crash in the summer
of 2007 that proved fatal for Mary
Perfecta Fabian Black, 17, who was a
passenger in the vehicle Sanchez was
driving.
"Gabriel ... Sometimes the result
of our actions is not tangible," began
a statement Black read before
Sanchez in the courtroom. "You
rolled the dice and you lost." he con-

chance. You have ant opportunity to

this tragedy."
According' to As-.i-t.nri State

al Jackson County teens riding in his
vehicle, including Mary Black. .
"After a night of social events, -he.
was engaged in jumping a hill on
Berskshire Road at estimated speeds
at 80 to 80 miles per hour," said&
Sims.

Patrol, Sanchez lost control of the

Sanchez .. Continued From Page IA

His probation will last about 15
months. The terms, according to Sims,
include the following: Eight public, in'
person, speaking engagements, most of'
which- will take place in the Jackson
County School District-and two of them
to take place at Ponce De Leon High
School and Bethlehem High School; a
curfew from 7:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., wvith
the exception of school and extra.curricu-
lar activities that are 'supervised by
Sanchez's parents or another responsible
adult; a suspended license.for 36 months;
200 course of community service, half of
which must be served in a trauma envi-
ronment-such as an emergency room or
with highway patrol; and'$240 in restitu-
tion to the Malone Lady Tigers basketball'
team, for which Mary Black was an active
team member.
Sanchez will also be required to pub-
lish a letter of apology in a Sunday edi-
tion' of the Jackson County Floridan.
Additionally, he will be charged $168 in
court fees.
Mary Black had just turned 17 before
her death. She leaves behind her parents
Scot and Cristina Black, and her older
brother, Chris.
"Our marriage is being held together by
a thread at best," Scot Black read to
Sanchez in court. I gave Mary permis-
sion to go that night, it was my fault. I
was to blame. Chris struggled at FSU
hoping to major in biology. He lost his
scholarship. With counseling and a lot of
* hard work he was able to return this fall
semester. To you this may be over, I don't
know. For us there will never be closure.

Mary's room is just the way' she left it.
Bijrhda\ presents not touched, mail
unopened. clothes in the hamper. I look at
her door and know she won't be walking
out and say 'Dad what's for breakfast."
Cristina Black spoke next, choking
back sobs as she told Sanchez anid the rest
of the courtroom about her daughter.
"'I've been patiently waiting for this
opportunity\ to tell you from my dying
heart about my loving daughter. Mary
Perfecta Fabian Black. Mary was a
friendly, loving, caring, helpful person.
Fun to be around. She loved and cared
about her family and friends. I was the
happiest Mother when Mary came into
this world. My prayers were answered. I
took good care of my children, the best
way that my parents had taught me. I was
so protective with 'them. I did everything
that a Mother can do for their children.",
"In the summer of Mary's 6th grade
year we moved here from Ohio. She start-
ed going to Malone school. She played
basketball, soccer and softball. Basketball
was her passion and in her heart. She was
the most highly recruited point guard
according to her coach. She had been
playing basketball since she was in the
4th grade. I very much enjoyed going to
all her games and I will miss that very
much. When her team went to the state
finals and lost by one point, she promised
me that they would go back in her senior
year. But, that promise will never be ful-
filled. You took my daughters dream and
my dream that one day she would be
playing college ball and attending Ohio
State."

"She trusted you that night to take her
home safely. The choices you made that
night in June robbed Mary of'her future.
You still have your senior year. When its
time for your prom, I want you to think
about how Mary missed hers. When you
are at your graduation, I want you to think
about how Mary missed hers. The deci-
sions you made that night not only took
my daughters life bu't, affected many oth-
ers. You took a teammate from the Lady
Tigers, a classmate from the class of 08, a
friend from all the students, Chris's sister
and our daughter."
"For the life of me I can't understand
why you made the choices that you made
that night. What were you thinking driv-
ing that fast? The consequences can not
be reversed. Mary is gone and we have to
live with that everyday. I hope you
learned something from this, because our
lives will never be the same. Part of me is
gone. I miss' my daughter dearly; I miss
her smile, her laughter,: her voice and
touch. I miss everything.For now, I can
not forgive you, but hopefully with time
this will change."
As the trial ended, Sanchez approached
Scot Black with his hand outstretched.
Black's eyes fixed steadily on the
young man's, and the two, stood in a
motionless hancj shake, silent except for
two words.
"Good luck," said Black.
Sanchez's parents decline to comment,
but his attorney Bary Baroset said the
Sanchezes have been through a trying
time and recognize with great sympathy
the tragedy the Blacks have endured.

In life and in election: Choose and choose wisely

BY THOMAS VINCENT MURPHY

"Change" has been one of
the major issues in the upcom-
ing election, from both the
Democrat .and Republican
Party.
While watching the candi-,
dates running for office on tel-
evision the other day, I real-
ized that the initial excitement
that I had about, this historical
event was beginning to
"change" to a feeling of seri-
ous concern.
Barack Obama is an out-
standing orator who can ignite
a room with excitement; and I.
am proud to see ant African
American candidate with an
opportunity to continue mak-
ing history.
John McCain is a veteran
with a moving story about his
experiences as a prisoner of
war that should make us all
feel appreciative for the sacri- .
fices of our men and women in
the military.

Sarah Palin has brought an
emotional lift to the
Republican Party that has
caused a great deal of excite-
ment.
Joe Biden has shown the
tough energetic image that he
is known for. .
However,' as I hear speech
after speech and hear negative'
connotations toward each
other from the candidates, and
see how they change. their
opinions in certain instances, I
wonder what each of the can-
didates really does believe.
Then there are the commen-
tators, who give their opinions
about the candidates, and how
good or bad each candidate is
doing; their opinions are based
on their affiliation with a cer-
tain party; their job is to try
and make their candidate look
good, no matter what.
When I watch our future
leaders maneuvering with tac-
.tics that will enable them to
lead our country, it's an

uncomfortable feeling in cer-
tain aspects. When you're
going through what we as a
country are presently (high
gas prices, high food prices
and the high cost of living)
going through, you want
strong solid answers that you
can reallybelieve.
This race reminds me of
how I look at life in general
these days. Growing up in a
large city my trust factor was
limited to my family and close
friends. "
When I moved to rural
Northwest Florida, I had to
adjust to the warm friendly
atmosphere of the South.,
This part of the country has
been known for it's slower
pace of living and pleasant
atmosphere among its citi-
zens. This feeling (relaxed and
friendly) still exists in our area
in many instances, but the
Winds of change have definite-
ly affected our part of the
country.

Some of the mistrust and
doubt that is common in our
large cities has begun to creep
into our lifestyle. The popula-
tion growth of this area has
created a need for some level
of adjustment in the way we
live.
For me, meeting someone
new and getting an immediate,
opinion of them is ng longer
as simple as it was in the past.
That old nemesis "doubt"
seems to be raising its ugly
head. '
How and when do you
decide if you should invite a
new acquaintance into your
home (hopefully the one place
you feel safe)?
Is life turning into a con-
stant gamble?
Figuring some people out
can be as frustrating at times
as figuring out what our presi-
dential candidates will dis-
agree on next.
Years ago I heard that peo-
ple would get married;

because .they fell "in love at
first sight" (I haven't heard
that line lately). I-don't know
how those marriages fared in
the past, but making sure you
know who you'll spend your
life with is very important.
There is so much deception
around these days that it is,
wise for all of us to be careful
with whom we associate. In,
my opinion, it takes a long
time to "really" know some-
one these days.
You will meet some folks in
life that with time and com-
munication, can end up being
great friends; while others that
appear friendly initially can
turn out to be someone of bad
character.
Don't rush to judgment! It's
too bad that we as' American
citizens have such a short time
to decide .who to vote for to be
the next President of the
United States of America.
Voting in our great country
is an opportunity for each of

of weary travelers holed up at
a roadside diner. A nightclub
singer named Cherie (played
by Marilyn Monroe in the

movie adaptation) has been
kidnapped by a young cowboy
who is ready to sling her over
his shoulder and carry her,
kicking and screaming, down
the aisle. As a counterpoint to
the romance, the cafe owner
and the bus driver at last find
time to develop a friendship of
their own; a middle age schol-
ar comes to terms with him-
self; and a young waitress also
gets her first taste of romance.

Michelangelo in Concert at BCF

SPECIAL TO THE FLORIDAN
On Sept. 30, at The Baptist
College of, Florida (BCF) in
Graceville, Italian performer
Michelangelo Nari will per-
form compositions from his
Italian repertoire "Speranza"
beginning at 7 p.m.

"Speranza" is the Italian word
for "hope," but for Nari it
means much more than wish-
ful thinking: it means a pas-
sion for music, powerful emo-
tions, and the will to share it
with his audience..
Nari comes to the United
States having studied under

BCF Voice Professor
Kimberle Moon, and Rob
Seible who recently returned
from Italy after a series of
voice seminars they taught
throughout the country.
"American audiences will love
his voice -and the way he
sings," said Moon. "There is

something about his singing
that moves emotions deeply
and sends chills down my
spine," adds Seible.
Nari brings to the United
States a slice of the country
where the bel canto has its
roots. He sings about the great
Caruso; about love, about -a
life painted by music with the
colors typical of the small
Italian villages on the western
Riviera. Ligure, his birthplace
of twenty-six years ago, is
located between ,France and
the splendid towns..of the
Cinque Terre.
"I already love this country,
and the fact that it has offered
a chance for happiness to so
many people that were perse-
cuted at home or had no way.
of living during hard times,"
said Nari, after having been in
the U.S. only a few days. "I
also love my land for being so
rich with great and expressive
music. I was very happy when
I was asked to choose the
music that I would sing during
these eight weeks. abroad
between Texas and Florida,"
he said.
Nari has recorded several
singles and has already

reached number two in the
Italian charts with the gold
record "Zidane, il a tape"
(2006), under the alias "La
Planche." According to his
manager, Nari's strongest suit
is interpreting Italian classics
from the '60s with a more con-
temporary, yet passionately
melodic style. He was
Geppetto in a revival of
"Pinocchio" an original musi-
cal theater work featuring
music by "Pooh" one of the
most famous bands in Italy.
Michelangelo lives in Milano
where he works with several
other artists and has made
noticeable appearances as

vocalist with some a-cappella
groups such as "Vocal Jam."
Nari said that he is excited
to have a chance to be in the
U.S., learning about America's
music specialty: musical the-
ater. His objective is to absorb
as much as possible from the
great singers of the 'Golden
Age of Broadway so that he
can be as much an ambassador
for Italian music here as' one
for musical theater in Italy.
For more information con-
tact the BCF Music Division
at 263.3261, ext. 427 or learn
more about Michelangelo Nari
on his Web site,

Seminaries to visit BCF Campus

SPECIAL TO THE FLORIDAN
On Friday, Sept. 19, The
Baptist College of Florida
(BCF) in Graceville will be
hosting representatives from
Baptist seminaries and educa-
tional institutions beginning at
8 a.m., in the Frank Farris
Student Center. ,
Representatives. will be
available to answer questions
on their specific degree pro-
grams from schools such as
Southeastern Baptist
Theological, Seminary in
Wake Forest, N.C.; Mid-
America Baptist Theological

Seminary in Memphis, Tenn.;
and ;New Orleans Baptist
Theological Seminary in New
Orleans, La.
Last semester, six different
seminaries visited the campus,
recruited students, and set up
exhibits informing BCF jun-
iors. and seniors. about their
graduate degree programs. In
this joint format, students have
the opportunity to compare
each seminary and contrast the
similarities and differences of
each school. "We wanted' to
assist our students in' selecting
a place to continue their edu-
cation beyond BCF.

Because of the expenses
involved in traveling to multi-
ple schools, we thought it.
would be a benefit to have the
,various seminaries come here
so that our students can make
an intelligent decision in nar-
rowing down the list of
schools that they will visit,
based upon the programs the
seminaries have to offer," said'
Roger Richards, director of
Student Services.
'The event, is open to the
public. For more information

ticipating, please contact

Bulldogs hold off Tigers

BY DUSTIN KENT
FLORIDAN SPORTS EDITOR
Bradley Battles and Tre Long com-
bined for 265 total yards and four
touchdowns to lead the Marianna
Bulldogs past the Graceville Tigers
36-28 Friday night.
Battles rushed for 126 yards and
two scores and Long scored on a run
.of 48 yards and a pass reception of 53
yards to'lead the Bulldogs, now 2-0
this season.
The Bulldogs led 29-8 at halftime
before a furious rally by the Tigers,
now 1-1, made it a one-possession
game with 6:09 left in the game.
Graceville's last shot at completing
the comeback fell short when quar-
terback Justiri Miles was run out of
bounds at the Tigers' 43-yard line as
time expired.
"It was a great football game,"
Marianna coach Rob Armstrong said
after the game. "I was pleased with
how we started the game. We jumped
on them early, but they came right,
back at us."
The Tigers put quite a scare into
the Bulldogs when Chris Works
stripped Battles of the football and
raced back down the field 75 yards
for a touchdown to trim the MHS
lead to just eight at 36-28.
The Tigers got the ball back one
last time from their own 1-yard line
with 1:50 to play, but a pair of sacks
and an intentional grounding penalty
put the breaks on Graceyille's final
drive,
It was quite a rally by the Tigers,
though GHS coach -Todd
Wertenberger was more concerned
with the three first half turnovers his.
team committed that led to 14,
Marianna points apd' necessitated a
comeback in the first place.
"We killed' ourselves with the
turnovers," Wertenberger said. "I
really felt like they forced one on that
interception, but on the fumbles % e.
just didn't take care of the ball and
dug ourselves a hole."
The first fumble came on a missed
.option pitch from Miles, to Antrell
Wright, recovered by Laramie
Dryden at the Marianna 31.

Marianna's Fidel Montgomery runs downfield against Graceville Friday. Marianna won 36-28. Mark Skinner
/ Floridan

One play later. Battles took it 69.
yards up the middle of the Grace% ille
defense for a touchdown to make it
13-0 Bulldogs..
Fidel Montgomery recovered a
Hoover fumble on the Tigers' next
possession and Tommy Stephens
picked off Miles later in the half and
returned it 63 yards for a touchdown
with 5:12 left in the half. .
The 2-point conversion by Battles
gave the Bulldogs a three-touchdown

Q. Graceville scored a touchdou n on
its opening possession of the second
'half, driving '53 yards on six plays
% with Leron Hoover taking it in from
a) ard out to make it 29-14. .
Marianna answered with a six-play
scoring drive of its own, with Battles ,
scoring from 2 yards out to ive the
Bulldogs a 36-14 lead with 6:20 .left
in the third quarter.
Hoover's. 38-yard kickoff return on

*the ensuing kick gave Graceville
prime field position at the MHS 31
and the Tigers paid it off seven plays
later on a 14-yard option keeper by
Miles.
The .2-point 'conversion .by
Treyshaun White made it 36-22 with
2:50 left in the third.
The Bulldogs are off next Friday,
while Graceville hosts Holmes
Count) at 7 p.m.

LAKE SEMINOLE-Bass
will bite actively near the
banks, especially early in the
morning. Fish topwater lures
just after daybreak for good
results., Along. banks and
slightly offshore, seek sub-
merged treetops and fish soft
jerkbaits. This may tempt
largemouths after the sun has
been up a few hours. Grass
fishermen can still take a few
fish if they limit their fishing
to the grass that is still green.
Fish the pockets in the grass
with lightly weighted Texas-
rig worms..
Bream fishing is fair on
worms and crickets fished
near the bottom in all the tra-
ditional panfish haunts.
Crappies are slow. Look to
the ledges along the main river
channels for minimal action.
Hybrids are slow at present.
Catfishing is very good.
Fish just off the bottom at
depths of around 12 feet.
LAKE EUFAULA Bass
are rather slow overall, but
some anglers report minor

fishing report

success. Those catching fish
seem to be doing so on the
deep creek ledges and certain
ledges along the main river
channel. Patient fishermen can
do reasonably well using
Carolina-rig worms in these
locations. Crankbaits and
slow-rolled spinnerbaits are
not paying off as they should
right now.
Bream are quite active and
will readily take crickets and
worms, particularly along
steeper banks with rip-rap or
natural rock cover in the area.
On the negative side, the
bluegills and occasional shell
crackers are quite small over-
all.
Crappies are slow. Catch a
few, perhaps, along some of
the deeper -creek channels.
Hybrids may school late in
the afternoon.
LAKE ANDREWS/CHAT-
TAHOOCHEE RIVER If
the creeks aren't too muddy,
venture upstream and tempt
the bass with small, lightly
weighted Texas-rig worm in

pumpkinseed, motor oil, or
similar pattern. Fish around
visible cover very slowly. Also
try jerkbaits and shallow
crankbaits for possible suc-
cess.
Bottom-fishing with earth-
worms in these same creeks
can produce some fair mixed-
bag bream and catfish catches,
Most of the bream are feisty,
hand-size shell crackers that
are quite enjoyable to catch.
The drift-fishing for bream in
the main river has slowed
down.
Tailwater catfish have been
fair and the bluff-wall catfish-
ing is good at times, but spot-
ty. Wigglers are the preferred
catfish offering at present.
Crappies are slow.

breasts. Fishing was good.
Better than good, actually. The
bream were, large as well as
numerous. .
The stream, and being there,
was good as well. Still as pret-
ty as I remembered from years
past; water black and flowing
like dark molasses, terrapins
sunning on half-submerged
. fallen tree trunks, verdant
bankside vegetation bedecked
with dew-dappled spider
webs, an occasional clump of
aquatic wildflowers.
Nice. At least until we
rounded'a bend and were con-
fronted by something that
brought home the fact -that
looks, indeed, can be deceiv-
ing.
-Around the bend was a deep
pool, formed by slackening
current making a lazy course
change hard against a sharply
curving cut-bank. The site,
and the "sight," motivated a
mildly vulgar comment from
my friend.
"Damn, this place looks
nasty," he muttered.
It did. Soda cans, bait cups,
food wrappers, arid other(
assorted debris littered tthe
bank.
Similar detritus bobbed in
the eddy where the creek
twisted itself around the bole,
of a downed white oak. Snarls
of discarded fishing line and
even the remains of disposable

disgust and, anger evident in
his tone.
Contrarily, I do understand.
I know full well why so many
folks are apt to habitually scat-
ter their leavings amidst other-
wise lovely surroundings.
It's simple, really, and it las
little to do with the fact that
America is the site of a mam-
tnoth ongoing toga party and
the "frat house" is in a con-
stant state of morning-after
clutter.
The plain fact is, in all we.
do, we are by and large fol-
lowers. We litter and pollute
for the same reason we might
let a sissy little European fash-
ion designer dictate what
clothes we wear..In short, we,
"trash" the great outdoors
because someone else trashed
it first and somehow that
makes it seem alright to follow
suit. We fail to see how one
more piece of filth could pos-
sibly matter.
But here's the one part that
does baffle me. Who was first?
What long-ago angler, pic-
nicker, or hiker initially came
upon this dark, unspoiled pool
of pure water, tossed in a
handful of garbage, and there-
by led so many others to
believe it is an acceptable
dumping ground? Such a fool
might just as well have drawn
a scrawled mustache on the
Mona Lisa.

original sin's worst fault lies
in making subsequent sinning
much easier.
, Chances are it's only the
,thoughtless imitators we now
have to consider anyhow.
There are few unsullied places
left where man has not left
behind reminders that his is a
throwaway society.
Even with the growing pop-
ularity of such practices as
reuse and recycling, it's likely
we-will always be a nation of
discard.
Those who love and, hope-
fully, respect the outdoors
must take care that our dis-
carding is done only in places
we ourselves deem acceptable.
And, brethren, our woods and
waters were never meant to be
landfills or dumps. '
Okay, Kornegay, you're no
doubt thinking, you've made
your point. We shouldn't litter
up our outdoor "playroom"
just because someone else did.
We hear and agree. Now why'
don't you stop preaching and
offer some practical sugges-
tions on how to clean up the
mess that's already there?
Well; I'm not smart enough
to formulate any miracle cure,
but I think I know where to
start.
What if every angler, hunter,
and other outdoor enthusiast,
wherever his sporting pastime
takes him, simply stops and
