County takes up a

fistful of road issues

At

BY DEBORAH BUCKHALTER
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
Jackson County Commissioners have taken
steps to shore up a sinking road that they fear could
collapse.
The board on Tuesday selected a contractor to
replace culvert cross pipes on Sand Ridge Church
Road.
One board member, District 5 Commissioner
Milton Pittman, blamed the problem, in part, on
beavers.
The galvanized cross pipes need to be replaced
with concrete versions, county staff said, because
the existing pipes are rusting and have holes that
allow soil to get into the pipes.
That's also where the beavers come in, Pittman
said.
"In that area of the county we have a lot of prob-
lems with beavers it's just a beaver haven
because it's low-lying and swampy," he explained.
"When the pipes rust out, the beavers get in.there.
They can go most anywhere, and they undermine
the' earth under the asphalt. The road is beginning'
to sink, and it could cave in if we don't do some-'
thing. It's sort of a dangerous situation."

Pittman said replacing the galvanized pipe t% ith
concrete is a more expensive solution than simply
replacing it with more of the same type material,
but that in the long run the change will be worth
the extra money.
"I think we've replaced the galvanized pipe once
already. If we go in and put cement Culverts in with
mitered ends to:keep the beavers out, we're going
to solve the problem permanently. The pipe won't
rust out, the material can breathe, and the ends will
keep the beavers out."
Jones Construction won the job with a bid of
$57,400. ,That wasn't the lowest offered, but
County Engineer Larry Alvarez said the lowest
bidder was rejected'in light of its lesser experience
with road construction projects and because it was
not prequalified by the FDOT.
Several other roads were also on the agenda as
Jackson County' Commissioners met Tuesday in
their first regular monthly session of September.
Commissioners agreed to seek bids for work to
be done on Wintergreen and Howell roads, for
instance.
Wintergreen is slated for widening and resurfac-
ing in the section that runs from State Road 69 to
Basswood Road. The cost will be paid through the

'Living Waters' exhibit premieres today

SPECIAL TO THE FLORIDAN
The public is invited to the
premier opening of "Living
Waters: Aquatic Preserves of
Florida," a multi-media expe-
rience of film and photo-
graphs, Thursday, Sept. 11,
from 6 to 9 p.m., in -the
Chipola College Arts Center.
The free evening of art,
film, music and refreshments,
will. include discussions and
demonstrations by the artists.
Th6 exhibit, which will be
:on display Sept. 8 through
:Oct. 10, features photography,
-film and music inspired by the
Florida's natural waterways,
including a collection of 29
fine art photographic images
by Clyde Butcher, renowned
Florida Eyerglades photogra-

For more than a decade,
Stoltzfus and his Live Oak

tured rare images of natural
Florida, with Living Waters
winning a coveted Crystal
Reel award for excellence.
The film showcases a dozen of
'the state's 41 aquatic pre-
serves, highlighting their natu-
:ral and cultural significance.
Mark Hinson, .a senior

writer for the Tallahassee
Democrat, says, "Even the
most jaded CEO of an asphalt
company who wants to pave
Florida from coast to coast
would have to admit that the
documentary 'Living Waters:
Aquatic Preserves of Florida'
is dripping with gorgeous
footage. It's eco-tourism at its
most luscious and wild as well
as a ron-preachy reminder of
the fragility of these underde-
veloped Edens. Clyde
Butcher's massive, black-and-
white photos of the preserves
are dramatically juxtaposed
with brilliant color shots of the
same swamps and coastlines.
Tallahassee composer and
saxophonist Sammy Tedder
provides the ethereal back-
ground music throughout the
watery journey."
Sammy Tedder, a Florida
Panhandle music legend,
scored the film, weaving
sounds of natural instruments
he fashioned from swamp
reeds for flutes and cypress
logs for percussion. Tedder
also will perform at the pre-

The program is a joint project

FLORIDAN SPORTS EDITOR
The Graceville Tigers got
three touchdowns from
Dialo Martin to defeat the
Cottondale Hornets 44-22
Tuesday night in middle.
school action in Cottondale.
Graceville broke open a
tie game in the final minute
of the first half when Martin
scooped up a Cottondale
fumble and returned it 30
yards for a touchdown to
give the Tigers a 20-14 half-
time lead.
Martin then rushed for a
touchdown on the first
Graceville play of the sec-
ond half to spark a huge
second-half effort by his
team.
"We played pretty good
offense in the first half, but'
not good defense,"
Graceville coach Travis
Miller said. "In the second
half, we played better
defense and got some
turnovers."
After Martin's rushing
touchdown put Graceville
up 26-14, the Hornets fum-
bled the ball on the ensuing
possession, giving the ball

back to the Tigers, who put
the ball in the end zone
again to go up 32-14.
"We played alright, pretty
good," Miller said. "I think
(Cottondale) is better than
what they played the other
night. We had already
played a jamboree and had
that experience, which
helped us get some of our
kinks worked out.
"Without the turnovers, it
would've been a tight
.game."
Cottondale turned the ball
,over three times, two opn
fumbles and another on a
mishandled kick return.
Hornets coach Chris
Obert said his team execut-
ed well offensively with the
exception of not taking care
of the football.
"I thought we were able
to move the ball a little bit,
but the turnovers killed us
in crucial spots," the coach
said.
"I thought we had a good
game going in the first half,
then they stripped (Sheldon
Vann) and picked it up
clean and ran it in with 43
seconds left. That was the
turning point in the game."

A Graceville defender tackles a Cottondale ball carrier Tuesday night during a middle
school game in Cottondale. Mark Skinner/Floridan

Vann also scored two,
touchdowns for. the
Hornets, with Chase
Pittman scoring the other.
Graceville quarterback
Jackie Miles had t\mo rush-
ing touchdowns and Tigers
fullback Lamar Sorey
scored, another on the
ground.
"Graceville's a solid
team," Obert said. "Martin
is a real talented running
back. We had a hard time

trying to contain him. When
.\ou put a lot of focus 0on
him. the quarterback ',and
fullback get Nou on the
option.
"Defensively, v.e had a
couple of, good moments
but struggled for most of
the night." -
While Miller said he,
thought his team's more
extensive preseason experi-
ence gave the Tigers an
advantage over the Hornets,

Obert said that wasn't the
difference in the game.
"That may be true. but I
wouldn't use that as an
excuse.'" he said. "I just
thought they played better
than we did, played and
coached better."
Gracetille next plays
Sept. 16 at home against
Bonifay, while Cottondale
goes on the road to face
Freeport Sept. 16.
Both games start at 6,p.m.

was enough for the victory.
With less than two minutes to go in the game,
the Indians fumbled a kickoff that was recov-
ered by Liberty County to stop any threat of a
comeback.
Following the game, Grand Ridge coach Art
Porep said it was all about turnovers. '
"We turned the ball over three times, all
fumbles and missed a conversion that was the
difference in the game," he said. "We had
opportunities, we just didn't take advantage of
them. We looked better offensively, but we just
have to cut down on our mistakes.
"The guys played tough and they never quit."
