sweethearts' tokens of affec-
tion, and parents' loving gifts
took center stage Monday as
the Sneads Carlisle Rose'
Garden Club put on its first-
ever 'Show and Tell' meeting.
Helen Grice opened the ses-
sion by sharing two tiny baby,
dolls she'd received from her
parents, and a bright red zylo-
phone that Santa had brought
her on Christmas in the 1940s.
One of the dolls was espe-
cially dear to Grice.
In 1945, she was stricken
with polio and spent six weeks
at a children's hospital far
from home. In addition to the
doll that could easily fit in, the
palm of her hand, her parents
brought her a little wheelbar-
row and other small toys, to
"I spent a lot of hours push-
ing this baby in the wheelbar-
row," she said as she showed
off her keepsakes.
She showed another very
tiny baby doll complete with
a carrier that she'd gotten
from her parents at Christmas
"The toys were, small, but
the love in our house was
plentiful," Grice said as she
presented her treasures.
Bonnie Walden was up next,
and she brought a variety of
items to show. The age of one
pie6e, a mirror with an adver-
tising label affixed, was made
apparent by the phone num-
ber. The mirror, with the
image of a car etched in black
near its bottom border, let
folks know that the

and this phone number was
assigned back in the day when

operator to make a phone
call," Walden said.
She also brought items with'
a more personal connection to
her family. She had .a blue-
flowered bonnet which
belonged to her great-aunt, for
instance. "She was my
granny's older sister, and I
believe she was grown when
. my granny `was still' a little
girl, so I know this has to be
pretty old," she said.
. She also had a picture of her
mother and great-grandmother
which was taken when her
i:mother was about four years
old. "This picture is pretty
special to me," Walden said.
"My mother (Evelyn Chandler
Clark) is 88 and she lives in a
nursing home now, but when
she comes to visit she talks a
lot about the old days. When
she looks at that picture, she
says 'I remember that dress, I
remember the day the picture
was made' and she tells us the
story. It means a lot to us."
Walden also had a framed

newspaper article about the old
church she used to visit as a child.
"Smyrna Presbyterian Church was
located south of Chattahoochee on-
Hardaway Road, and when I was
growing up, we would go out to it on
Sunday evenings every month or so
to meet with their young people," she
said. The frame for the article, she
said, was made from the flooring in
the church many years later when the
structure was dismantled for safety
Her husband John helped tear the
long-vacant church down, and his
friend Gene Shelton framed the arti-
cle about the demolition with boards
from the floor of the church. 'The
frame is even more special to the
Waldens since their friend Shelton
died a few months ago'.
Walden had one more treasure to
share, this one related to her career as
She acquired a set of nursing text-
books and one Florida State Hospital
records book from the estate of a
Chattahoochee matriarch, Mae T.
Clark. The record book, from the
early 1920s',-showed that the hospital
operated on a mere $7,000 a year or
so back then.
"Mrs. Clark was a very spirited'
lady," Walden said. "After she retired
from Florida State Hospital, she
worked at other area hospitals right
up until just before she died, and she
lived to be around 100."
The nursing texts are special to
Walden, she said, tiot only because
she is a nurse herself but because
three of her aunts graduated from the
one-time nursing school at Florida
After Walden finished her presen-
tation, Melba Lanier got up and
showed off the exquisitely carved
shoes her young husband brought her
from the Phillipine Islands when he
was stationed there during World
War II. The shoes, painted green, red,
and tan, featured huts, palm trees and
other images representing the area
were he was serving at the time. She
also showed off her grandmother's
Thisis one of the two tiny baby dolls that Helen Grice received as gifts
from her parents in childhood. Mark Skinner / Floridan
old metal alarm cock, and an iron pot
her grandmother used to cook veg-'
etables for farm hands. She also
showed an old fan-shaped vase
which was one of her best yard sale
Barbara Branainan brought a hand-
made pen holder that her husband's
uncle made at the age of 13 and
which now is used to hold some of
the family's pens from the 1800s and
an old mechanical pencil that can be
worn as a pin. She also brought an
inkwell dated 1892 which also came
down through her husband's family.
Ann Stone Dykes an d her sister,
Myra Shiver, brought a vase from the
1930s, one of the few luxuries their
family was able to salvage from the
Depression years. They also had a
chair that their grandfather Stone
built, outfitting it with a cowhide seat
when he put it together in the late
1800s or early 1900s.
Dot Lewis brought a few examples
of the yellow and green glassware
she's been collecting for the past 30
years, one piece of which glows
when exposed to a blacklight.
Christine Pevy brought something
related to her unusual childhood -
she grew up in a county jail. This
happened because her father was the
sole jailer in her town for most her
her young years, and her mother was
the matron. "Me and my girlfriends
used to have pajama parties in the
jail, and they thought that was excit-
ing," she said. Pevy brought a news-
paper article that was written about
her family in the 1960s, long after
she was grown but while her parents
still lived in the jailhouse. Pevy's
husband of many years,Bill, spoke up
after her presentation, saying that
during their long-distance courtship
he sometimes spent the night in the
jail because he lived so far away, but
teased that her father "kept. three
walls of steel" between them during
those visits. The Pevy's also brought
along the stack of letters that they
exchanged during their romance.
Pevy also brought some family
pictures, including one of her grand-
mother and great-grandmother
together, along with one of herself as
and infant and one of her father as an
infant. The two show their favor.
Helen Drummond brought a clock
she'd inherited from her grandpar-
ents. As a child, she'd always loved it
and asked when she was very young
if she could have it. They told her
she'd have to wait until she got older.
When the time finally came for her to
take it, however, she found that she
couldn't. "It just' wouldn't be going
to gramma's without seeing the clock
there, so.I decided to wait. I didn't
take it until the 1970s, after, they had
both died," Drummond said.
She also brought along a baby cup
dated 1927, which belonged to a
cousin who died at the age of 17.
Drummond also had a smooth-
worn lock she believes to be more
than 100 years old. It belonged to her
husband's grandfather, who died in
1957 at the age of 107. He used it to
lock up his smokehouse, she said.
She also shared some heirloom of
national significance. one of them
was a deed signed by President
William McKinnie, and bearing the
presidential seal. The document
shows the sale of 159 acres of land in
Tallahasspe marked "Meridian."
She also brought letters that her
great-grandfather wrote while he was
a Confederate soldier in the Civil
War. He was shot and killed in battle,
and his body was never brought
home, she said.
Billie Dickson and her sister-in-
law, Nell Wester brought some treas-
ures which belong to Dickson's
mother, Pencie Wester, who died just
a few weeks ago at the age of 102.
Her voice near breaking at times,
Dickson read a resolution that her
mother's mother had written more or
less on her deathbed. She died when
..oInuiiIucu ruoin rage l.A
Pencie was about two years of age,
but she nevertheless had a voice in
her children's raising. On a crum-
pled piece of paper that she gave her
husband, she schooled him on how
to raise their youngsters in the event
of her death. In it, she implored him
to not let the children play marbles
on Sunday or engage in other frivo-
lous pursuits on that holy day. She
wanted to make sure, though, that
they had time to play, sing, hear
music and read good books as they
were coming up and that they should
be trained to be worthy, busy citizens
in adulthood. Dickson said her
grandfather must have followed his
wife's dying wishes pretty well.
"Very seldom did I see not see my
mom's hands busy readying, crochet-
ing, ...she did not sit idly," Dickson
said. She also brought a purse that
belonged to her grandmother in
thel880s, and her grandfather's Bible
which is so old she has to keep it held
together with a rubber band.
Martha Jones brought a high chair
that her dad built or had built for her
and her siblings many years ago. She
said her own children, and her broth-
er's children have also sat in the little
red high-chair and that she plans to
pass it on to her granddaughter some-
Audrey Rowan brought a clear
bowl her great-grandmother used to
eat from, along with the bowl that her
mother used when she milked the
cow on the family farm. She also had
a butter press that her mother had
bought on sale for 50 cents. It had
been marked down from 60 cents,
and was well-used throughout
Betty Miles brought a clock that
her daughter inherited from her
grandparents and some coins from
the late 1800s and early 1900s which
wee handed down to her son through
his uncle Fred Silas.
Grice said she was pleased by
Monday's turnout and hopes to invite
the general public to participate in
and attend the show and tell session
