could use a phone call or visit to ensure their
"The mission of Police Care is to make sure
city residents living alone have daily contact
with a friendly member of the Marianna Police
Department," said MPD Chief Hayes Baggett.
There is no program in Jackson County
equivalent to MPD Police Care, said Baggett,
and the free well-check service is available to
anyone inside the city who is living alone and
'in need of such assistance.
Currently, 77 residents are recipients of the
service, with MPD dispatchers being their
point of contact.
"We have some people whose families are
not based nearby anod we're their only point of
.daily contact," said dispatcher Frances Yon. /
Participants call the police department every
day, and when dispatchers do not hear from a
participant, a dispatcher will make efforts to
reach that person by phone. If the call is not
successful, an officer will visit the person's
home to make sure the person is all right.
"Sometimes we have people who have fallen.
Sometimes people have died,"'' said Yon.
She and other dispatchers said families of the
participants show much appreciation for the
program, and so do the participants.
"You' can't imagine how appreciative they
are," said Yon.
In many cases, participants' provide the
police department with a key to their home, in
case officer should be presented.with a need to
enter the house in order to assist the participant,
"When they apply we have them fill out a
form for information on emergency contacts,
doctors, allergies, that sort of thing," said
Baggett. "In providing this service for our city
residents, we're helping people continue to live
on their own."
The dispatchers who make the friendly calls
each day are: Frances Yon, Clarity Hogan,
Irene Williams, Ray McDowell, Stephanie;
Miller and Belinda Williams.:

Many Louisianans who fled Hurricane Gustav
just- got in their vehicles and headed for parts
unknown to live among strangers for a few days.
But others, like'Michelle Reber, knew they'd
find .a band of loved ones waiting for them in
The history of her connection to the local com-'
munity is a remarkable story that started before she
was even born.
Now 39 years of age and living in the West Bank
community of Gretna, La., Reber was born to
James Curtis Odom and Willene Odom. The
Jackson County couple had ten children altogeth-
er, and Reber was the baby of the bunch.
But tragedy struck the family when she was just
two years old, and set in motion a series of events
that separated Reber from her siblings for the next
When she was still a toddler, her father died of
cancer and her mother died of a heart attack.
Some of her brothers and sisters were young
adults when that happened, and they tried to keep
the' family together even though child welfare
'authorities stepped in to oversee the youngest three
Reber's sister 'Bee Bee" Springer of Grand
Ridge remembers what happened all too well.
Springer was about 20 when their parents died.
After Michelle was placed in the care of the state,
Springer used to go and get her baby sister on
weekends. But after a while, a troubling pattern
began to develop. She would arrive to pick
Michelle up. only to be told that she'd gone on an,
outing. This happened a number of times,, until
one day she. was simply told that Michelle had
been adopted and that there was no way she could
contact the adoptive family.
Years later;, she learned the truth. Michelle had
not been immediately adopted, but had instead
entered the foster care system: .
Michelle said she 'was bounced from home to
home for about five years before being placed for
She has no fond memories of the foster care
years. She said she suffered physical and emotion-
al abuse throughout out that period. Her rescue
came at the age of seven, whenLouisiana couple
Larry and Audrey Vicknair entered her life.
'She said their loving attention helped heal her of
the wounds she suffered, and that she couldn't
have asked for better parents. They are in e'veO
meaningful way her mother and father. .
Still, as adoptive children will, she wondered
many times about her birth family.
Why didn't they want her, were they looking for
her, did anyone even remember her?
.Reber's adoptive mother promised her on her
18th birthday that she'd do everything she could to
help her find her siblings, but five years passed
with no success. All they had was the family's last
name Odom and a location Round Lake, Fla.
Michelle couldn't have known it then, but her
birth family had never stopped looking for her.
Her brother Robert led the charge, spending
thousands of dollars and thousands of hours trying
to find her. He chose Michelle as his own daugh-
ter's middle name in honor of his lost sister, and
kept on looking. But time and time again, he
bumped into the unassailable brick wall of secre-
cy .that surrounded the adoption process in those
Reber, in the meantime, grew up and married.
She moved away from her parents' Louisiana

one which, ironically, put her on the path to a joy-

road and headed to Jackson County.
Incredibly, by the end of that day she was stand-
ing in the presence pf all eight of her surviving sib-.
It happened quite simply, in a way that might
only happen in small town America.
Reber stopped at various places in Round Lake,
asking a vague question "do you know of any
Odoms who used to live here?" Soon, she hit pay
"I ran, across an elderly gentleman at a fruit'
stand. I bought some fruit from him, and I asked
if he knew some Odoms. He looked at me and said,
'Your name's not Michelle, is it?' He said he used
to go fishing with my dad. He said my uncle Steve
lived right behind him."
And with this stunning revelation, a family
reunion was quickly arranged.
"I was just reeling, but I went to the phone and
called my uncle Steve. The phone went dead, and
I just started beating on it. I was frantic, and I had
to go another couple of miles to call again. I final-
ly got them. My uncle was totally blown away. He
told me where he lived, and it was as simple as
that. I just drove down the road to his house, and it
was clear we were family all the Odoms have the
same eyes. He started calling my brothers and sis-
ters. They didn't believe him; they were, like;
'Come on, do you know how long we've been
looking for her?' They were just.crying, and .they
all started driving, and by that night they were all
with me in his living room."
There was one sad moment that evening;
Michelle learned that one of her brothers had died
But the rest of the time was filled with stories
that let her know her family loved her and wanted
to find her all along. This all happened 15 years
ago, and since then she and her brothers and sisters
have gotten together often.
They see each other at least twice,a year, when
she comes down for Christmas and summertime
visits from her home in Gretna.
And many times, her adoptive parents come
with tier. That's the icing on the cake.
"My brothers and sisters fell in love with them,
and they fell in love with my brothers and sisters,"
Reber said. "They call my parents 'mom and. pop.'
We're one big family now," Reber said.

Tigers try to stay
hot in regular
BY' DUSTIN KENT
FLORIDAN SPORTS EDITOR
After looking exceptional in their
preseason debut, the Graceville
Tigers hope they can look even more
impressive in their regular season
The Tigers, who beat Sneads 42-14
Aug. 29 in a preseason classic, will
kick off the regular season Friday
night when they host the Liberty
County Bulldogs at 7 p.m.,
Graceville dominated the Pirates in
the preseason contest, scoring 30
points in the second quarter alorfe
and rushing for 431 yards for the
game, while holding ,Sneads to just
128 yards total on the night..
However, Tigers coach Todd
Wertenberger said that his team can
improve significantly in one key
"I think a lot of our execution
problems later in the game were from
fatigue," the coach said. "We're
going to work real hard on condition-
ing this week because we have to get
in better shape. We had two guys
with cramps (against Sneads) and we
can't have that mess. We have to get
in shape and run the whole game.":
Early in the game, execution was
far from a problem fdt the Tigers.-
After a scoreless first quarter,
Graceville opened the game up in the
second, scoring four touchdowns on
four straight possessions.
"We played with a lot of intensity,"
Wertenberger said of his team's per-
formance against Sneads. "We gave a
lot of effort the whole game, which
was promising. In the third quarter, I
knew we were tired, but I was proud
that we put another drive together for
a touchdown because you have to
learn to put a team away.
"I'm happy with the effort. I hope
we'll just keep getting better every
What the Tigers also unveiled
against the Pirates was a potentially
potent option attack, 'which Sneads
had trouble defending all night.
Running back Antrell Wright
rushed for 134 yards and three touch-
downs on 10 carries, all in the first
half. Bulky fullback Leron Hoover
carried'13 times for 89 yards and
quarterback Justin Miles rushed nine
times for 89 yards and two touch-
downs, while making great decisions
on the option all night.
It's a triple-threat that presents a
daunting challenge to opposing
"You ask any high school coach,
when you've got an offensive line
like we've got, a good fullback and a
good option quarterback, you can
Graceville quarterback Justin Miles tries to elude a trio of Sneads defenders during the Aug. 29 preseason clas-
sic in Graceville. The Tigers open the regular season Friday against Liberty County. Floridan File Photo
win a lot, of games like that,"
Wertenberger said. "We're blessed to
have the pieces, I just hqpe we can
keep them healthy."
As for the offense the Tigers will
be trying to stop Friday,
Wertenberger said it's similar to the
one they faced against the Pirates.
"(Liberty County) is.basically run-
ning ,the same offense Sneads is,
which is good since we just played
them," the coach said. "They'll be
running a/ little more toss and count-
er,' but it won't be much different
than it was playing Sneads.
. "Defensively; they'll be running a
3-5-3 defense, with a lot of blitzing
linebackers trying to confuse you.
Their defense looks good. They can
run and they'll hit you?."
As for coming into the regular sea-
son on a high after the Sneads win,
USC leaps past UGA to No 1
Wertenberger. said his, team's
approach is always the same, regard-
less of the previous week's game.
"I was feeling good going into the
season," he said. "I don't know how
much it helps the kids. It's still just
like a business week for us. We're
going to do just like we always' do.
We played last week like a regular
season game we hope for more of the
same this week."
