Storm evacuees find haven in Jackson Co.

BY DEBORAH BUCKHAJTER
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
For a time, the traffic on Interstate
10 was bumper to bumper through
Jackson County as residents of
Louisiana and Mississippi sought
refuge from Hurricane Gustav.'
They filled local
motels, and were
trying to make the
most of it as they
waited out the
storm.
Kim Melvin of
D'iamondhead,
Miss. took her
youngsters to
Florida Caverns Kim
State Park, and they Melvin
spent Monday after-
noon splashing around in the pool at
their Marianna hotel.
This isn't the first time the
Melvins have had to run from a
storm. A tidal surge from Hurricane
Katrina devastated their former
home, but Melvin was relieved to
hear from a neighbor Monday that
their current home seems .to have
made it through Gustav mostly
unscathed. It Was telling that she
viewed a tree falling on the roof as a
minor problem.
While the Melvins played in -the
pool, Jeremy Carter and his
Louisiana family cooked a tailgate
party in,the adjacent parking lot.
Carter, Reginald Cheaves and others
in their group were making fast
friends with another family who had
the same idea. As burgers, steaks,
chicken, hot dogs and sausages siz-
zled on their grills, they compared
notes on their journey here from
their respective towns.

Renaissance celebrates folk arts

BY DEBORAH BUCKHALTER
FLORIDAN STAFF'WRITER
When Charles Mitchell .and Floy
Spears struck a deal at Renaissance Park
on Monday, it was a business transaction.
right out of the old rural days that the
Labor Day event was meant to celebrate.
Mitchell, a blacksmith, traded the
long-handled spoon he'd just made for a
bag of muscadine grapes that Spears had
,harvested, along with one of her hand-
'made handkerchiefs and a bar of lye
soap that she'd set out to dry.
Mitchell and Spears were working
side ,by side.in the park. not far from
where 70-year-old larion Spires sat
'whittling a walking. stick from a sweet-
"gum branch.
"Never know, I might need this myself
pretty soon," Spires said with a smile.
A whittling knife wasn't the only kind
of blade that came in handy in days gone
by; Spires also had his grandfather's
crosscut saw on display. Likely well
over 100 years old, the saw and the
wood rack which cradles it will likely
pass through many generations of the
Spires family. Spires said he felt it was
important to pass the implement on.
Within his reason for that also lay the
explanation for why he volunteered to
work at the annual event.
"You have to remember where you've .
been to know where you're going, he
said.
"We didn't throw anything away. We
used it all. Life was kind of rugged but it
was good. This old saw kept us keep in
wood for the fireplace that we used to
stay warm and for the wood stove we
used to cook our food."
Spires also brought along some of the

cane syrup he'd made earlier this. year,
and he wasn't .the only one serving up
something good to eat at the festival.
Ann Mazion and several other women
labored in the Renaissance Park outdoor
kitchen all morning Monday, filling the
air with the unmistakable smells of
country cooking.

They fried chicken and offered up
okrai, corn bread, collard greens, rice and
smoked turkey necks to feed the hungry
crowd.
Diners were serenaded as they ate,
with old-time music as well as modem

Bowers Family Reunion

held in Jacksonville

SPECIAL TO THE FLORIDAN
The descen-
dants of Ed and
Basha Bowers
observed the
94th Bowers
Reunion at the
Wyndom
Jacksonville Nolyar
Riverwalk Bowers
Hotel in
Jacksonville, recently.
The reunion was started by
Nolyar Bowers in 1914 in
Bascom. Nolyar,,.the seventh
child of Ed and Basha Bowers,
was married to Annetta;
together they were parents to
nine children. Annetta passed
away in 1910, and four years
later, Nolyar, the owner of a
small grocery store, had a big
meal prepared, called the nine
children together and had a
great feast. At Nolyar's
request, the children kept the
tradition alive.
With its origins in Jackson
County, the reunion expanded
to include the families of
Nolyar's brothers and sisters,
and is now held in various
cities where the Bowers fami-
lies reside. Hosting the 2008
reunion 'in Jacksonville were
the families of Evelyn Bowers
Martin, formerly of Marianna.
The weekend included a
variety of activities. Families
got together for a meet-and-
greet, food and games on
Friday night. The picnic and

the annual. family meeting
were Saturday. On Saturday
night, everyone enjoyed the
banquet and the entertainment
that followed.
The traditional Sunday
morning worship service was
held at the hotel, with music
provided by the Bowers choir,
under the direction of Dr.
Doris Bowers Herring of
Bascom. The Rev. Ethel
Mitchell of Delray Beach
delivered the message, and a
memorial service was held at
.the close of the service.
Following the worship serv-
ice, a delicious meal was
served and awards were given
to various family members for
dedicated service.
Family members were also
reminded to begin writing sto-
ries for the "Bowers Family
Book." The book is set to be
published before the 100th
Bowers Family Reunion in
2014. That reunion will be
held in Jackson C6unty, where
the first reunion originated in
1914.

Have Car,

will travel

Let us come to your home to explain

the Reverse Mortgage Program

"Have car, will travel" is Sr. Reverse
Manager's motto.
Boswell, a Reverse Mortgage specialist,
knows that often it can be hard for people in
their senior years to get around, so he comes to
you,
We take the application in the comfort of
your home, and return to the privacy of your
home to close your Reverse Mortgage,"
Boswell said. "It gives me a lot of pride and a
great feeling to give homeowners a lifetime
income and funds to use at their leisure without
ever having a monthly payment as long as they
live in the home."
A Reverse Mortgage is a HUD/FHA pro-
gram that allows homeowners,, age 62 and
older, to receive a tax-free loan based on the
equity in their home without having to sell,
give up the title or take on a new monthly
mortgage payment.
To obtain a Reverse Mortgage, there are no
income, employment, medical or credit score
qualifying restrictions and homeowners can use
the money however they want whether they
choose to use it on bills or even a vacation.
Boswell said he equates it, to a line of credit -
you can use as much or as little as you need.
According to Boswell, the first step in
obtaining a Reverse Mortgage is for the client
to obtain HUD approved Home Equity
Conversion Mortgage (HECM) counseling. In
addition to pointing clients in the right direc-
tion, he likes to answer his client's questions
from the very beginning whether it's in his
office or in their homes.
Here are some frequently asked questions:
Q1. Will the bank take my house?
No. The title to the property remains in your
name. You must keep the taxes and insurance
current on the property.
Q2. Does my home have to be free and clear?
No. Many people .get a Reverse Mortgage to
pay off their current mortgage or equity thereby
eliminating those monthly payments.
Q3. How much money can I receive?
Three factors are taken into consideration:
Date of birth of the youngest person on the
title, your zip code, and the value of your
home.

Q4. Is the money I receive taxable?
No. The IRS treats these funds as borrowed
money. This is a loan, not income.
Q5. What happens ta my home when I pass
away?
The loan is repaid to the lender through the
sale or refinancing of your home by your heirs.
Any proceeds in excess of the amount owed to
the lender belong to your heirs. You only pay
for the funds you have used plus interest.
Q6. What if I don't use all the money?
You and your heirs are required to pay back
ONLY the outstanding balance that is due. Any
money remaining after the mortgage is paid
regardless of the home value, goes to your heirs.
Q7. Can I be forced to sell or vacate my home
if the loan amount exceeds the value of my
home?
No. The FHA mortgage insurance guaran-
tees to pay the difference to the lender. You
cannot be forced to sell your home if the loan
exceeds its value. If you have any other ques-
tions or would like to know more about
Reverse Mortgages, please call Jim or Steve
Boswell at 1-888-575-5888 or 334-897-1400.
They have a car and they will be happy to do
the traveling for you. Call for an appointment
today and they will meet you in the conven-
ience and privacy of your home and will show
you what is available to improve your quality
of life.

Old-time modes of trans-
portation also took center
stage at Monday's event.
Horse-drawn carriages
were on display, for instance,
thanks to the Buffalo
Soldiers-Marianna chapter.
Will Barnes, president of
the local chapter, showed vis-
itors a doctor's wagon, an
Amish family wagon, and a
supply chuck wagon like the
one used by the all-black mil-
itary regiments of old known
as Buffalo Soldiers.
And perennial festival par-
ticipant Leon Kelly was there
again this year with dozens
of old bicycles. The jewel of
his collection is the one his

transportation. He rode it
many times from Marianna to
Dothan and back again,"
Kelly said.
He also had a couple of
tandem bikes and some vin-
tage models from various
eras.
Kids who wanted to ride a
bike Monday were welcome
to do so, but Kelly put one
condition on that invitation;
they had to help fix one
before they could take one
out for a spin..
Kelly, who owns a
shoeshine shop in Marianna,
also brought along had his
shoeshine collection as usual.
He's been shining shoes ever
since he was a child, and he's
amassed a collection that
includes a wide variety of
'unique shoeshine stands,
boxes, and many other
antiques of the field.

He's getting ready to put
them in a permanent museum
somewhere in Marianna, but
likes to bring his collection
out to the festival each year,
to showcase the tools of his
time-honored trade.
Kelly said he values the
opportunity to both honor
those who came before him
in the business and also to
educate youngsters about the
old days and old ways of
doing things. '
That was a thought
expressed by many who
spent their Labor Day work-
ing for that cause.

Volleybal

BY SHELIA MADER
FLQRIDAN CORRESPONDENT
After a 26-year absence volleyball returns to
Graceville High School The varsity squad will
take the court with 12 players vying for starting
positions while 13 players are readying for top
spots for the junior varsity team.
The Lady Tigers are under the leadership of
Coach Bob .Bloomter. Bloomer is in his first year
Sas head, coach but brings years of experience with
him having played co-ed volleyball. Bloomer is
optimistic about the squad's inaugural year, "I
think-, we are capable of winning some games. I
hope we can build up a foundation so they have an
'itch for next year. You have to have the itch to

back at Graceville High

build a program and have success."
Principal Chris Franklin is equally excited about
the new program, "These girls, are playing their
heart out. We played in two pre-season games and
they didn't win a game but you would have never
known it. They were ready to take the court for
their next game." '
Taking the court for the varsity squad will be
Heather McCoy, Diamond Robinson, Cassandra
Delgado, Ashley Miles, Amber Waddell, Shantil
Reed, Kayla Merritt, Paris Hill, Praisesha Hill,
Andi Pierce, Samantha Myrick, and Brittany
Flournoy.,
Members of the junior varsity are Jessica
McClendon, Asia McClendon, Winterra Pittman,
Jacquese Daffine, Casey Ward, Megan Sanders,

Carley Adams, Ann Marie Nichols, Lyndsey
Wheatley, Fiarra Sorey, Shai Dozier, Patrea Clark,
and Angel Ropozo.
The Lady Tigers participated in the Pre-Season
Tip Off Classic in Chipley last week and opened
their regular season Thursday night against
Bethlehem. Graceville has yet to record a win but
has played well. The Lady Tigers lost in consecu-
tiye games against Bethlehem but recorded 20
points in all but one of their games. Bloomer sees
that as a victory.
The Lady Tigers will be on the road Tuesday at.
Chipley with three games: Varsity will tip off at 6
p.m. with the junior varsity scheduled for two
games at 4 and 5.
