Burglary suspects

named, jailed

BY KATE McCARDELL
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER

Two men were arrested on
Wednesday just a few streets down
from the house they allegedly bur-
glarized twice in one week.
According to Marianna Police
Chief Hayes Baggett, the house at
4573 South St. was burglarized on
Saturday and a MPD officer had
returned to the house Wednesday
afternoon to follow up on the case.
While there, the officer apparently
observed that the house had again
been burglarized, said Baggett. It was
confirmed that a VCR and jewelry
was stolen from the residence.
At about the same time that offi-
cers were investigating the scene of
the burglary, a traffic stop was per-
formed on a vehicle on Pearl Street
as a result of that vehicle running a
stop sign, said Baggett. The officer

Marvin Jerome Jarrod Daniel
Blount Gibson
also noted that the
vehicle's tag was expired.
As the routine traffic stop was con-
ducted, said Baggett, it was learned
that the passenger, Marvin Jerome
Blount of 4128 North St., Marianna,,
had an active warrant out of Jackson
County. Also during the traffic stop,
the officer observed the same stolen
VCR in the vehicle, which was being
driven by the burglary victim's
grandson, Jarrod Daniel Gibson of

24396 NE CR 69A, Altha.
Upon Gibson's arrest for posses-
sion of stolen property, officers dis-
covered his grandmother's stolen
ring in his pocket.
Gibson was transported to the
Jackson County Sheriff's Office for
further questioning, according to
Baggett.
Blount was charged with burglary
of an unoccupied structure after he
admitted to accompanying Gibson
during the Saturday burglary, accord-
ing to Baggett.
Gibson was charged with burglary
of an unoccupied structure for both
burglaries and also With two counts
of grand theft, according to Baggett.
Gibson also has charges pending
for two counts of uttering a forged
instrument in a separate case, accord-
ing to Baggett. In that case, the vic-
tim is Gibson's brother, said Baggett.

Yard man

arrested in

check theft
FLORIDAN STAFF REPORT
A man was arrested Wednesday for allegedly
stealing checks from a house where he had been
doing yard work, according to authorities.
Grover F. Steiner, 44, was arrested on a charge of
burglary and on two counts of forgery, according to
a news release from the Marianna Police
Department.
The victim told authorities that several days after
Steiner did yard work for her, she was alerted by her
bank that two of her checks had been cashed, said Grover F.
the MPD report. Steiner
The victim learned that a book of her checks had
been taken from her residence, said the report.
The report said that an investigation led authorities to Steiner, who
they say admitted to stealing the checks and forging the victim's name
on two of the checks.'
Steiner was able to steal over $300 from the victim's account, accord-
ing to MPD.
Steiner has no listed address and told authorities that he has no per-
manent place, to stay.

BCF student serves in New York City

SPECIAL TO THE FLORIDAN
From the small town of
Graceville to the "Big
Apple," Baptist College of
Florida (BCF) Mission's
major, Courtney Coggins,
spent two and a half months
in New York City this sum-
mer serving with Graffiti 2
Ministry.
Graffiti 2 is a community
and children centered min-
istry branch from Graffiti
Church located in the Lower
East Side of Manhattan. The
vision of the ministry is to
have a church planted in trou-
bled communities of all five
boroughs.
While Coggins was in
NYC, she spent her time
planning and preparing for
summer camps that have
been held every year since
the start of Graffiti 2 Ministry
three years ago.
The director, Andrew
Mann, began as a summer
intern for Graffiti Church in
Manhattan. Falling in love
with the ministry there and
God's calling on his life,
Mann was asked to start the
second Graffiti in Mott
Haven which has been rated
one of the worst places to
raise children. An additional
employee, Ashley Emmertt,
has just been hired to help
Mann with Graffiti 2.
Emmertt also started out as a
summer intern and immedi-
ately felt God's call on her
life to live and serve with the
people in the Mott Haven
community.
While the people of Mott
Haven have a rough lifestyle,
they also have a deep desire
for a better life. While serv-
ing Coggins quickly learned
over the summer that people
need to be ministered to no
matter what their lifestyle
may be. She. stated- that her
views on people not needing
to hear the gospel until they
changed their lifestyle
promptly changed to just the
opposite, "They need the
gospel before they can
change their lifestyles."
According to Coggins, the
work she participated in was
simple. The Graffiti 2
Ministry held two separate
camps during the summer
and then a block party at the

end. The first camp was held
in the mornings from 9 a.m.
to 12 p.m. This was a sports
camp, which lasted four
weeks highlighting football,
baseball, tennis, basketball,
and cheerleading.
Churches from different
parts of the country, come and
lead the, sports camps. Every
day the children were taught
about a particular sport to
improve their skills, as well
as learned about Jesus Christ.
On Friday, Mann would
present the gospel to all of the
children.
The other camp was a fine
arts camp held in the after-
noon. The children learned
about music, drama, dance,
and art. During the block
party held at the end of the
camp, the children performed
a production showcasing the
work they did all summer.
For example, during the art
class, they drew and colored
the backdrop, and many chil-
dren sang solos, duets, and
raps. The theme song they
performed was "Lean on
Me."
All of the children heard
more of God's word and on
Friday' they heard the story of
the missionary Jim Elliot.
"I would like to encourage
all of tour students and others
to go into the world and serve
God," stated Coggins. "'Even
if you are not called to over-

Ready to go

Don Dowling and his Sneads Pirates

are anxious to get season underway

BY DUSTIN KENT
FLORIDAN SPORTS EDITOR
With his debut as Sneads coach
nearing closer and closer, first-year
Pirates head man Don Dowling said
he and his team are growing ever
more impatient with the waiting.
"Yeah, I'm pretty nervous right
now," the coach said Thursday, one
day before,tonight's preseason clas-
sic against Graceville in Graceville.
"I haven't slept much this week. I
went to sleep at 2:30 a.m., Monday
and, 4 a.m., Tuesday night.
(Thursday) morning, I made it to
4:30 a.m. But the kids are getting
excited about it. We just want to
play."
After a long offseason with spring
practice, summer workouts and fall
practice, the Pirates, like all other
teams, are ready to take out their
aggression on an actual opponent. ,
"We're looking forward to play-
ing someone else, that's for sure,"
Dowling said. "I hope the kids feel
better than me because I'm about
shot-out. They're just absolutely
tired of playing against each other.
They want to see a different color
jersey."
Just as the players are eager to get
back to hitting opponents, Dowling
is just as anxious to see how far
along his club is.
"You want to get that first game

"Because it's a cross-
county game, it should be
a big one."
-Don Dowling,
Sneads coach
out of the way to see how much
they're going to remember," the
coach said of his team. "We've got
new uniforms, a new look and the
kids are excited about wearing that
stuff, but when they get out there
under the lights, are they going to
freeze up or play? We want to see
how we stack up."
The Pirates will certainly get a
stiff test from the Tigers and the
intensity of cross-county game
should be the same level as that of a
regular season contest.
"Because it's a cross-county
game, it should be a big one,"
Dowling said. "I hope everybody
shows up for it because when you
play at a place like Graceville or
Sneads with two county teams and
the place is full, it's just a great envi-
ronment for the kids to play in.".
Dowling said that like every other
team in the area, the Pirates' fall
practice has been affected by the
weather, though he has been pleased.
with what his team has accom-

polished so far.
"We've come a long way," the
coach said of his team. "The kids
have picked up on most of what
we've done, but we still have some,
things we need to put in that we

haven't been able to yet, so we're
still trying to get all that lined up.
You have good days and bad, but
we're just ready to play so we can
see where we measure up."
The game kicks off at 7 p.m.

Pricing and Costs

In this economy, most businesses are caught between rap-
idly increasing prices of commodities and raising prices for
their goods and services.
For one firm that we are assisting, the cost of steel increas-
es almost every month. It has already gone up by ten percent
in the first six months of the year. Competition has also
increased, so the firm feels that it cannot raise prices despite
the fact that it is being squeezed by both steel and fuel price
increases. Clearly, the owner is very concerned about main-
taining their positive profits.
So many firms in today's economy are experiencing a sim-
ilar squeeze. Forced to raise their prices in response, firms are
now worried about losing sales and profits. However, there is
so much a business owner can do to mitigate the damage
caused by price increases.
If you are competing with other firms, it, is important to
remember that they have to buy the same products you do and
are experiencing the same price increases. If many firms in an
industry begin raising prices, consumers will be able to
understand and tolerate the increases that you implement.
Most consumers understand that in order to stay in busi-
ness, a firm needs to make a profit and cover its costs. Most'
will tolerate a five percent increase in price, especially if you
clearly explain why you are doing this. Most understand as
they are seeing costs increase all over, particularly in food
and fuel. Increasing price because of the higher costs of fuel
and other commodities is clearly understandable. For exam-
ple, we are working with one service industry firm that
increased its prices mid-year by six percent. Following their
priqe increase, they saw no decrease in sales. In fact, some
customers wondered why they waited so long to raise prices.
Firms should consider unbundling as many products or
services as they can. Doing so will allow you to mask the
price increase. For example, one service company previously
included transportation in its pricing. They removed it from
the bundle and began billing transportation costs separately.
While some customers were unhappy, the majority under-
stood what the firm was doing -especially following the nice
letter that was sent out to announce the price increase.
What is important to remember here is that receiving com-
plaints from a limited number of customers does not neces-
sarily mean that the price increase, was not tolerated. Rather,
certain customers are just always. going to complain about
price increases. Paying too much attention to the vocal minor-
ity could be very dangerous to the financial health of a busi-
ness.
Clearly every business needs to be profitable over the long
run. Raising prices to cover cost increases is simply good
business and economics. If you are, however, in an environ-
ment that prohibits you from increasing your prices, you may
need to think about the products or services that you are pro-
viding. It may be that you are in a much too competitive envi-
ronment, in which case you will need to find better ways to
differentiate your products and services from others in the
market. You may also find that certain products or services
are no longer viable for your business.
With costs rising all over, each and every business must
make sure that they are covering all of their costs in order to
stay in business. Now go out and make sure that your prices
are sufficient to cover your costs.
You can do this.

The Truth About Money

Plan to protect more than-

your income if laid off

BY R EDELMAN

Mention the word "layoff' and most. people
think about the pain of losing thdir income. But
what about your health, disability and life insur-
ance? Nearly 60 percent of Americans are cov-
ered by employer-sponsored insurance plans,
according to the U.S. Census Bureau. When
employment ends, so does the coverage. That loss
can lead to a rude awakening when people dis-
cover they can't automatically replace their cover-
age or that such replacement is far more expen-,
sive than what they.paid for previously,
If you suspect that you might suffer a job loss,
start planning now. Here are your options for
maintaining or replacing, your coverage:

HEALTH INSURANCE
-- Your Spouse's Plan: Typically, you can be,
added to your spouse's policy within 30 days of'
losing your job, even if it isn't open enrollment
time. Pre-existing health problems usually Won't
prevent you from signing up.
-- COBRA: If you worked for a company with
20 or more workers, you have the right to contin-
ue being covered by your former employer's plan
for up to 18 months after you leave the job -- but
at your cost. (This privilege is denied if you were
fired for gross misconduct.) COBRA is especially
useful if you have health problems that might pre-
vent you from qualifying for a policy on your
own, but be forewarned: COBRA coverage is
expensive.
-- Individual Policy: Health, life and disability
insurance are all available to individuals.
Compared to a spouse's plan and COBRA, these
offer the most flexibility in terms of options and
price, but they also require research, the comple-
tion of applications and eligibility exams. Here's

how to choose a policy:
1) Begin with research. Read several policies
and chart the benefits. Similarities and differences
will emerge, enabling you to compare.,
2) Complete an application. It can take up. to
three months for an application to be approved
and coverage to begin. The insurance company
might request a copy of your medical records
from your physician, and you may be required to
undergo a medical exam (at the insurance compa-
ny's expense). Note: You must be relatively
healthy to get individual insurance; pre-existing
conditions (which include health factors and
build, family history, driving record and hobbies)
can increase the cost of coverage or make you
ineligible.

DISABILITY & LIFE INSURANCE
If you do not have an income, you cannot
obtain disability income insurance because the
policy replaces lost income due to illness or
injury. (Without a job, there is no income to
replace.) Ditto for life insurance. It is designed to
protect those financially dependent on you; if you
are not earning an income, then generally there is
no financial loss upon your death (at least in the
opinion of the insurance industry). Hence, only
limited coverage is available.
Therefore, it's best to obtain your own disabili-
ty and life-insurance policies before you lose your
job. Once you have the policy, it cannot be can-
celed if you are out of work, provided you keep
paying the policy premiums.
Individual disability insurance could cost $300
a month, while health insurance might cost as
much as $300 for a single person or $1,000 a
month for a family of four (excluding dental or
vision coverage). But there's good news with life
insurance: Individual policies often cost less than
employer-provided policies. Don't wait until you
get that pink slip to consider your insurance
options, Have a plan ready -- and make it by talk-
ing with your financial adviser now.
