Former Sneads High School
teacher Tommy Stoutamire pleaded
guilty Tuesday to multiple charges
related to offenses against four of his
female students, accepting a deal that
will put him behind bars for just
under a year.
Stoutamire pleaded guilty to four
counts of child abuse, two counts of'
false imprisonment, .one count of bat-
tery, and three counts of lewd and
lascivious molestation in the case.
All the incidents cited in court
occurred in 2007, according to court
officials. Stoutamire was teaching
agriculture at SHS when the case
investigation began in May of last
year. He also sponsored the school's
FFA and had 25 years of experience
as a teacher. He, resigned .his post
shortly after the investigation began.
Stoutamire, who lives in Liberty
County, was sentenced to serve 11
months and 29 days in the Liberty
County jail. He will be on probation
for an additionaL14 years under the
terms of the plea agreement.
He will be required to give up his
teaching certificate/license, and
never seek employment in the field
again, according to the terms of the
Stoutamire wrote a letter apologiz-,
ing to the girls as part of the deal.
Although they were named in his
letter, which was addressed to prose-
cutor Heather Lane, only their initials
will be used here because they are all
"I want to express my sincere
apologies to CM, KB, MY and LH,"
his letter reads. "Each of these young
ladies have suffered this past year in
school and in the community and
have done nothing to deserve the
treatment. I accept responsibility for
my actions and for the hurt the
actions have caused not only to these
four ladies but the Sneads communi-
ty as well. I urge all involved to allow
these girls to attend school in peace
and understand they have done noth-
ing wrong. It is with great regret I
move forward with my life today. I
understand and accept the. punish-
inent of the Court and I will work to
earn the trust of my family, friends,
loved ones yet again."
He was sentenced as a sex offend-
er, and must comply with a number
of requirements related to that status.
David York, the father of one vic-
tim, said he had at first wanted to see
Stoutamire sent to prison rather than
a county jail, but that after more than
a year of dealing with the trauma, the
family finally decided to accept the
plea in order to get on with their
lives. Some of the offenses carried
possible penalties of up to 15 years in
York said he expects to seek civil
relief. in the case, both against
Stoutamire individually and against
the school system.
He and wife Margie, the victim's
mother, have retained lawyer Chris
Young to handle their civil cases.
In couit Tuesday prior to sentenc-
ing, Margie York read from a written
statement addressed to Stoutamire.
"It is so hard for me to stand here
and be calm after what you.did to my
daughter," she said. "There are no
words to express what we have suf-
fered this past year because of your
actions. You know, this letter of apol-
ogy you are giving my daughter
today could have been written a year
ago and even though it would not
have taken away what you did,
maybe it would have stopped .some
of the harassment she has had to
endure this past school year from not
only classmates, but from teachers as
well. All because she stood up and
told the truth. But when I become
overwhelmed by the anger and hurt, I
remember that my Lord will.always

die in random slaying
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
JACKSONVILLE Three people died in random slaying
and another who allegedly stole a police, car and threatened
officers with a knife was fatally shot by police durt-g a wave
of violence in Jacksonville Sunday. Mayor John Peyton and
Sheriff John Rutherford held a news conference Monday after-
noon and called on the City Council to pass a budget that
includes a $30 million anti-crime program. Among those shot
and killed were a 16-year-old boy riding his bike; a 30-year-
old man found in the front yard of a home and a 30-year-old
man who stumbled into a grocery store and collapsed. Officers
shot and killed Darry Edward Waters, 38, Sunday night after
they said he stole a police car, crashed it into several other
patrol units and threatened them with a large knife. Police said
he was recently released after serving nine years in prison in
Tennessee for attempted murder and manslaughter. Three offi-
cers were treated for minor injuries, including one who was
pinned between cars. Jacksonville's homicide rate reached 77,
compared with 80 for the same period last year.

At Dr. Kurpa's office we know how the feet are the ,
foundation of the entire spinal pelvic structure. Any -4
fallen arch or misalignment in the feet can cause pain
(now or later) in the knees, hips, back or neck and I
even cause them to wear out prematurely. Many spinal
conditions are actually the result of feet that are poor-
ly supported, and we can fix that!
We Now Have The AssociateTM Platinum from
Foot Levelers. The Associate Platinum is a digital scanner that
examines your feet and each of the foot's three arches. It prints
a color photo of your feet to show where you may have issues
that could affect the rest of your body. We then can recommend

Compass Lake in the Hills MSTU budget approved
BY DEBORAH BUCKHALTER
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
Jackson County Commissioners on
Tuesday approved the Compass Lake in the
Hills Municipal Special Taxing Unit assess-
ment of $135 per parcel in the 6,344-parcel
subdivision, the same amount as last year.
Citizens entered the discussion with con-
cerns about how the subdivision's Property
Owners Association's manages the budget
The POA, by contract, has managed the
MSTU funds. since the the taxing authority
has been in existence, and has 'come under
criticism for the past three or four years.
Some who pay taxes into the fund have
alleged that the money is sometimes spent on
uses not authorized in the ordinance that set
up the MSTU.
After reviewing complaints and records
this fiscal year, Jackson County
Commissioners have taken greater control of
the budget for the coming year and going
Now, for instance, the POA is given a 20
percent management fee and the rest of the
tax money is held in a special account to be
drawn on as approved expenditures are
made. Until this year, all the money collect-
ed was handed over to the POA in a lump
sum, with little county oversight into how
closely expenditures matched the budget
submitted each year.
Under the newly-negotiated management
contract and closer county control, budget
amendment will be required if the POA
wishes to deviate from the line-item MSTU
budget of roughly $860,000 approved
The two big-ticket items approved for pur-
chase' are a dump truck, with a down-pay-
ment of roughly $25,000 approved Tuesday,
and $43,000 worth of new equipment for the
volunteer fire department. The lion's share
of the fire department's allocation will go
toward outfitting a new brush truck for the

Panhandle scored just four
runs in a 4-1 victory over St.
Johns, La., Sunday night in its
first game in the losers' bracket.
But the Panthers combined
for 26 runs in Monday's games,
more than four times as many
as they scored Sunday.
Childs said that perhaps the
desperation of a team with its
back against the wall was the
catalyst for the offensive charge
"I think we realized that we
had nine outs left (against New
Georgia) and we were going
home, so the kids just came
alive," the coach said. "We just
started hammering the ball, tee-
ing off on them.
"In the second game, that
fifth inning carried over and we
started off the first inning right
where we left off."
The Panthers scored four
runs in the first inning against
JPRD, then scored three in the
third and three more in the
fourth to blow the game open.
"The kids are starting to have
fun," Childs said of his team.
"We hadn't had much fun the
whole tournament until
(Monday). The slow bats car-
ried over from the state tourna-
ment, but we got it going
"Hopefully, it's a wave we
can ride and it doesn't end until
The hottest Panhandle bat has
belonged to Trent Clark, who
was 8-for-10 at the plate
through the first three days of
Dillon Bennett hit a three-run
home run against JPRD and
drove in nine runs in the three
games since Panhandle's loss.
But the Panthers are getting
contributions throughout the
lineup, which has been the rea-
son for the offensive explosion.
"Everybody has started hit-
ting," Childs said. "It has been
a team effort. Everybody is hit-
ting the ball solid instead of
beating it around the infield."
Caleb Alexander started and
got the win against JPRD,
pitching three scoreless
innings, allowing one hit and
striking out five.
