ring for a shot at becoming the next
sheriff of Jackson County.
Charles "Chucky" Anderson, John
Dennis, Peter "Sonny" Fortunato Jr.,
Aldrich D. Johnson Sr, Wilham
Nelson, Jim Peacock, Lou Roberts,
Robbie Wester, Darryl Wilhams and
Zannie E Williams are all vying for
the position.
Property Appraiser Sharon Cox
and Tax Collector Sherry A. Brown
will return to office unopposed.
Jackson County Commissioner
Willie E. Spires will also retain his
District 1 seat, having drawn no chal"
ledger.
On the other hand, District 5
County Commissioner Milton
Pittman faces three Jerry Neel, Ben
Howard Odom, and Kenneth

Since 2002, Florida's
Move Over Law has
required motorists to move
over one lane or slow down
when passing road-side
emergency vehicles with
activated emergency lights.
Florida Highway Patrol
recently announced plans to
join forces with. Other law
enforcement agencies to
conduct an enforcementt
wave" that will focus heavi-
ly on motorists violating the
Move Over Law.
According to highway
patrol, the law "requires
drivers to move over one
lane whenever an emergency
vehicle on the side of the
road has emergency lights

not an option, the drivers

The tags will be used to
keep track of more than 200
items during an estate auc-
tion to be held Saturday, July
12, hosted by the Chipola
Historic Trust.

The featured guest speaker for the April meeting of the Sneads Carlisle Rose Garden Club
was Miss National Peanut Festival Madison Wester. Wester spoke of her pageant experiences
in becoming Miss Grand Ridge and going on to win Miss National Peanut Festival. She told
the club that she was inspired to compete by her admiration of Heather Whitestone
McCallum, the first deaf Miss America.
Wester is a 2008 graduate of Marianna High School as well as being the current MHS.
Homecoming Queen.
Joining her at the club luncheon were Rose Ray (Peanut Festival chaperone); Wester's
mother, Pattie Wester; her grandmothers, Martha Griffin and Nell Wester; her great-gratid- .
mother, Mrs. Poncie Wester; and a great-aunt, Billie Dickson.

efforts to preserve history and

Chipola also achieved suc-
cess with under-prepared stu-
dents. Chipola graduates who
required college prep/remedial
courses earned a 3.39 GPA in
the SUS, compared to a 2.87
GPA for college prep transfers
from other community col-
leges. .
Chipola's Vocational
Placement rate also was out-
standing for the 2004-05
school year. Placement is
defined as training-related by
virtue of related work, contin-
uing education, or enlisted in
the military.
A total of 233 students com-
pleted Chipola's vocational
programs in 2004-05 with a
100 percent placement rate.
And all of the 93 vocational
students who left the college
in 2004-05 without complet-
ing their programs were also

Chipola enrolled 42 percent
of the 927 district liigh school

major ethnic groups much
more successfully than most
Florida community colleges.
African-American students
were recruited at a 45 percent
rate, compared to 28 percent
statewide. White students
were recruited at a 41 percent
rate, exceeding the average
rate of 30percent statewide. *
Chipola graduates also out-
performed other community
colleges graduates after trans-
ferring to a state university.

Opportunity Maps delineate the
long-term vision for Florida's con-
nected trails network and are also
used to determine eligibility for
project funding under the Florida
Greenways and Trails Acquisition
Program. Proposals for property
acquisition originate with local

picked up hits for Malone while
Trevor Baxter drew a walk and

Malone will travel to East
Lakeland July 05 to complete in the
Dixie Ozone State Tournament.

The Malone 11-12 year old Dixie
Majors have the distinction of being
crowned the first District 5 Ozone
Champions as a result of taking two
out of three games in district action.
With Sneads and Chattahoochee
dropping out of the district play, the
Malone Ozone team had only to face
Grand Ridge. .
District play started Friday night in
Blouritstown with the Grand Ridge
Majors taking game one with a 5-3
victory.


Grand Ridge picked up the win
behind the pitching of Chris Green
who went the distance. Malone used
a smorgasbord of pitchers, Antwain
Johnson, Daniel Johnson and Robert
Orshall all threw two innings for
Malone.
Malone's offense was highlighted
by a two-run homerun by Robert
Orshall in the first inning. Grand
Ridge picked up their runs on no hits,
taking advantage of walks and errors.
In game tivo, Malone sent Daniel
Johnson to the mound who picked up
the 14-1 win. Parker took the loss for
Sneads. Ryan Danford picked up the

second place among eight teams .in
