Country music star brings

money to the bank for

Country Crossing
By DEBBIE INGRAM

DOTHAN, Ala. Love may be better than
MOney in the bank, but country .music star John
Anderson brought $10,000 to a Dothan bank
Wednesday as seed money for the foundation that
will oversee charitable bingo as part of the
Country Crossing development.
Anderson is one of more than a dozen country
music entertainers, producers and others who
have partnered with Enterprise native Ronnie
Gilley on what principles are calling "a country John Anderson
music entertainment mecca" to be constructed
down U.S. 231 South at Smithville Road.
"This is a wonderful thing for country music and this whole area," said
the 53-year-old entertainer who made a name for himself with the number
one hit, "Swingin,'" which went to number one on the country charts and
was named Song of the Year in 1983 by the Country Music Association.
Anderson presented five $2,000 checks to Houston County Foimdation
board member Nancy Arnold of Trinity Bank. The checks were from
George Jones, Tracy Lawrence, Lorrie Morgan, Darryl Worley and him-
self. All five have signed agreements of commitment with Resort
Development Group II LLC, the parent company for Country Crossing,
and have agreed to open venues at the development.
Anderson will open either a steakhouse or a Seminole Wind Grill on the
more than 750-acre site.
The foundation itself, which has as.its other oard member Dothan Area
Chamber of Commerce President Matt Parker, is the entity created in
February by the Houston County Commission to handle the charitable con-
tributions from an electronic bingo facility, to be included as part of Phase

want to get in and clean it up
then maintain it, make it look
like a park," Hatcher said.
In other recreation news, a
seasonal closing date of Sept.
7 was set for the Blue Springs
Recreational Area. That gives
the general public a week
more to visit the park after
Labor Day, which falls on
Sept. 1.
On a final note regarding
Hatcher's.department, county
recycling received an award
from Recycle Florida Today
fin -recognition of its thriving
recycling program.
The county competed with
34 other rural bounties for the
Outstanding County Program
Award.
Hatcher gave a presentation
at the conference where the
award was given, and said the
gathering was informative
overall.
He speculated that the coun-
ty received the award in part
because it is one of the few
rural communities in Florida
seeing an increase in recycling
activities. Most others, he said
are either staying even or are
seeing down-turns. Jackson
- County, on the other hand,
saw a 64 percent, increase in
2007,che said.

The privately-held Yancey
Bridge boat landing will soon
belong to the county.
According to County
Recreation, Parks and
Recycling Director Chuck
Hatcher, the owner inherited it
in an estate and offered to give
the roughly one-acre site- to
the county because the local
government's perpetual ease-
ment on the property left it of
little use to her,
The land will change hands
with the county paying only
for the closing costs and relat-
ed expenses.
The landing is .located off
Caverns Road not far from
Citizen's Lodge, which has
become a showpiece on the
county's growing.1ist of recre-
ational facilities.
Hatcher said the county will
now be able to seek grant
funds to improve the park,
possibly replacing the boat
ramp.
"We were happy to get it;
we wanted to keep that as an
access point to Chipola River.

BY KATE KERN
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
What better way to support thd troops who are willing
to shed their blood than by donating your own?
This Friday, blood donors will have an opportunity to
help their communities, as well as show support for U.S.
troops all in one sitting.
The Southeastern Community Blood Center will host
"Operation: Double Impact" this Friday at their Marianna
location in the Park Centre commercial park off U.S. 90.
According to area blood drive coordinator Susan
Harrison, for every unit of blood donated Friday, a care
package will be sent out to a U.S. soldier in Iraq.
"They're really nice care packages. They have things
like hand sanitized, toothbrushes, nutrition bars just a
lot of the things they can't get over there," said Harrison.

the community during a period of very low, in fact, criti- Sout east

nity, with Jackson Hospital receiving 100 percent of it's FIondan

as clerk of court
COunty commission minutes are
also available on the Internet.
I have implemented in court pro-
cessing where the clerk can enter
cases and court dispositions as well
as issue notice to appear and war-
rants while the judge is still on the
bench. The judge signs the orders
and the defendant, state attorney and
public defender receive their copies
before leaving the courtroom. This
procedure has been very cost effec-
tive because you are saving postage
as well as employee work time.
My next priority is to make elec-
tronic filing of cases and recording
of documents in thb official records a
reality.
I am seeking re-election to contin-
ue to provide exemplary service to
all residents of Jackson County and
e for my staff and I to treat each indi-
vidual with respect, fairness and
rds 24 friendliness. I am committed to
eek by doing my very best and pledge that I
nal jus- will never forget that it was you who

The Marianna Bulldogs edged out a
47-46 win over Sneads Tuesday night
in Summer League action in Marianna,
capping an impressive day for the
Bulldogs. .
Marianna routed Chipley 57-32 in
its first game of the day before narrow-
ly out-pointing the Pirates.
Bulldogs coach Travis Blanton said
he was pleased with his team's effort
on the day.
"I was just excited to see us play so
hard against Chipley," the coach said.
"Chipley is probably going to be the
district favorite and we have a lot of
young guys, so I was interested to see
how they would react against a big
rival like that.
"I was real excited about way we
played against them."
Blanton limited the minutes of the
few veteran players he has left in the
first half against Sneads, giving his
younger player an opportunity to log
more minutes.
"I felt really good about the way our
younger kids played against Sneads,"
he said. "Even though score was close,
I think that helped the younger kids a
lot."
Marianna led 13-8 early, but the
Pirates rallied back to take the halftime
lead on a buzzer-beating shot by Josh
Rogers for an 18-17 Sneads advantage.
T.he Bulldogs roared back at the start
of the second half, getting a steal and
lay-up by Brandon Bellamy, a 3-point-
er by R.J. Bowers and a basket by
freshman Trey Pringly to make it 24-
18 Bulldogs.
Another 3-pointer by Bowers made
it 27-20 MHS with 16:58 to play.
The Pirates answered with an 1100 to
reclaim control of the game.
A basket by Justin Neal, a bucket by
Sherrick Williams and a' three-point
play by Neal tied the game at 27-27.
A basket by Rogers gave the Pirates
their first lead of the second half with
12:51 to play. .

broken a two-year winless drought, in four of the
past five races he has finished in the top five.
'SNOtt Dario Franchitti. Last week at
Pocono, an accident knocked him out of the
race with 63 laps to go, and on Sunday his
engine blew after just 30 laps.

doing this for 14 years, and I've seen a.lot of
stuff come and go, and you realize right
quick that life is short and you've got to
enjoy it while you're here.
"I can remember times this was all I
breathe. And then when you lose certain
things in your life you learn to understand
that racing ain't everything."
For Hendrick, however, the win was big.
"Junior's got a lot of fans, and they ask me
the same thing every time I see them; iWhen is
Junior going to win a race?' Hendrick said.
"It felt like that was a gun to my head."

Consistency, not wins, may be key to

wiAR a two arh ought, any win is a good
But even Earnhardt conceded that his win
Sunday afternoon at Michigan International
Speedway mAy need an asterisk *victory
on gas mileage.
That's nothing against anyone who wins
on gas mileage; they're just playing the
game better. But Earnhardt's win certainly
doesn't look like any big turning point for
the Rick Hendrick camp. It was only
Hendrick's second Sprint Cup win of the
season Jimmie Johnson won at Phoenix
in April, also on gas mileage. -
Even Earnhardt said that if he had followed
the garite plan that everyone else did at
Michigan, he probably would have finished
about 25th.
But then Earnhardt's main goal this season
is to inake the championship chase, so con-
sistency and solid runs have meant more to
him than victories.
And the win, No. 18 of his career, puts ,
Earnhardt only 84 points behind tour leader
Kyle Busch.
Handling has been a major issue for
NASCAR's new car, and Earnhardt's was very
slow at the start of each typically 80-mile
(40-lap) run between pit stops, so he had to
play catch-up.
"We just lost so much track position from
the leader the first 20 laps of every run, the
car being so loose," Earnhardt said. "But I
felt we had a top-five, definitely a top-10 car.
"After that last stop we were going to be .
about six laps short, and I saved six laps of
gas. Just real lucky.
"I've got to hand it to [crew chief] Tony
[Eury] Jr. for being a risk-taker. Normally we
would not risk the top-five for a possible win -
because half the time it doesn't work. But we
did the right thing "
Eury said he actually called Steve Letarte,
Jeff Gordon's crew chief, and asked if he was
going to try to make the last run without a
pit stop. "He's like, 'No, I ain't going for it "
Eury said. '
Gordon's extra stop left him 18th.
"Worst-case scenario, we finish 25th," Eury
explained. "So who cares? Go for it."
But then the race went into overtime,
which made it even more nerve-wracking for
Earnhardt and Eury.
"I was like, 'All right, cool, man. No prob-
lem, no pressure, just save fuel, and if we
dozi't win, we don't win, no big deal,"
Earnhardt said. "I wasn't nervous at all, and
I'm always nervous in those situations. But I
really wasn't, for some reason.
But a gas-mileage win, well, it's not like
charging to a victory. .
"Yeah, I can understand how it might look.
... I know exactly what they are going to say
Monday," Earnhardt said. "But ... I got the
trophy, I got the points."

And NASCAR imally got a win by its most
popular driver, which in a spring filled with
turmoil couldn't have coine at a better
moment. .
"If it helps Brian (France, NASCAR's
CEOJ, and he's excited about it, then great,"
Earnhardt said. "But we've worked so hard
to get the win. We've worked hard to be
consistent all year though I missed the
joy of winning.
I never wondered, 'Man, ivill I never win
again?' I'll be around here for quite a while
and have more opportunities to win. The
winless streak didn't frustrate me as much as
most people would think."
