The Graceville Tigers ral-
lied from eight points down
to defeat Marianna 40-38
Tuesday night in Summer
League action at Marianna
It was the opening day for
Summer League, with
Bonifay and Port St. Joe also
in action Tuesday.
Port St. Joe took a pair of
lopsided wins in its debut,
beating Graceville 70-44 and
topping Bonifay 76-44.
The Bulldogs defeated
Bonifay 44-36 in the first
game of the day.
MHS coach Travis
Blanton said he thought it
was a good first day.
"I thought it went really
well," the coach said.
"Obviously, St. Joe was
clearly the best team, but I
thought Graceville played
extremely well against us. Of
course, we didn't play as
well as we would have
The Bulldogs led 10-2 in
the opening minutes of the
game, which consists of two
20-minute halves with run-
ning clocks, but Graceville

C.J. Dozier's lay-up with
16:51 left in the game put the
Tigers up 14-12.
A bucket from Quan
Boykin, followed 'by two
scores from C.J. Blount, put
the Bulldogs up four with
13:46 to play, and a tip-in by
Blount later made it 22-14
However, a 3-pointer by
Cameron Dozier stopped the
run and the three-point play
by Dozier put the Tigers
back in front at 24-22 with
10:28 to play.
The Tigers led 38-34 when
Blount trimmed the deficit to
two again at the free throw
line, but C.J. Dozier
answered with a bucket to
make it 40-36 GHS with a
minute to play. Graceville
got'the ball back after a
Marianna miss, but turned
the ball right back over with
28.9 seconds on the clock.
A Bulldogs bucket cut it to
two with 18.5 seconds left
and got the ball back with 15
seconds left after a missed
Graceville free throw.
But MHS missed a 3-
pointer on the next posses-
sion and a follow attempt by
Blount was off the mark and
rebounded byi the Tigers as
the clock ran out.

did a really nice job,"
.Blanton said of the Tigers.
"They outplayed us after the
first three or four minutes.
"They. made some shots
late that they didn't make
early that we contested. They
just did a good job."
The Bulldogs are replacing
a team full of seniors which
made it to the state semifi-
nals last season, making this
summer especially signifi-'
cant for Blanton's team.
"We're trying to get the
kids some experience to
work things out for next
year," the coach said. "We're
going to try to get them to
grow up quick. "It's starting

You want sqme of Kyle Busch? Better eat
Busch showed his strength again Sunday
with yet another Sprint Cup victory, this
tirie.in.the'BestlBuy'400 in Dover, Del., and
he 0optinues'as the top story in NASCAR. K
Ever Jack Roush's top two drivers, Carl'.
Edwards and Greg Biffle, couldn't keep up
wiOb Busch's late-race charge.
Ibme facts to consider:
0 Sunday's win was the fourth Cup win of
tklseason, in 13 races, for Busch and crew
ohitf Steve Addington.
- 'Busch has now won 10 of NASCAR's 35
national races this year, four in Cup (at
Atlanta, Talladega, Darlington and Dover),
four in Nationwide (at Texas, Phoenix,
Mexico City and Lowe's Motor Speedway)
and two in Trucks (at California Speedway
. Busch has led for 1,876 laps *in the three
"We didn't have the car to bear," Busch said.
" Carl and Greg were better But we made it on
the long run as good as they did; and we knew
if we could get track position and get in front
of them that we would be a little better.
. "The guys on pit road had a phenomenal
day. They got us out front, and that's what
won it for us. They should enjoy this win.
This is their win. I just drove the car, and
just paced myself."
Addington was getting kudos all around.
Joe Gibbs, Busch's car owner, says it has
been curious to watch Busch and Addington
learn each other this spring.
"They have an unusual relationship,
because Steve is very laid back, very even,
where Kyle obviously will sound off. So that's
a great combination," he said. "Sometimes
I'm more worried about Zippy [crew chief
Greg Zipadelli] getting on Tony [Stewart]."
Addington said Sunday's race didn't start
"When the race started, I didn't think we '
had a very good car. The Roush cars drove
away from us," he said "The way we got
ahead was just great pit stops green flag
stops. Those guys busted off 12-second stops, ,
every time. That gave us a big advantage,-,`"
In the car, Busch seems to be doing alrost..
Out of the car, he's doing his darnedest to
defuse the boos. I
"I've got to thank all the fans, even if
they're not Kyle Busch fans, that come out
and support NASCAR racing for us and
Swatch the races every Friday, Saturday and
Sunday," he said. "It's just phenomenal to
have their support ... and to put up with me
and everything else we've got going on."

Who's Hot! Kyle Busch. He has four wins
already and seems a lock to make the Chase.
His rivals have to hope he's peaking early
WhO'S NOt Tony Stewart. An accident
ended his race Sunday after just 17 laps and he
ended 41st. In four of the past five races, he has
finished 18th or lower.
For the Record
"When I heard, 'Wreck off Turn 2,' I
immediately was on the brakes. It's just
these cars don't stop as well as they
did in the past."
Denny Hamlin, who wound up in
the middle of tie 10-car pileup
at Dover and finished dead last.
NASCAR Notes NASCAR's 'verystrange' season mixes up the leaderboard
The first leg of Brian France's
Same is over. So what about the
Going into Sunday's Best Buy
400 at Dover, Fox's 12 NASCAR
Cup features were up an aver-
age of 5 percent which the
network says translates to an
average of 9.65 million viewers
per race, compared to 9.3 mil-
lion last year.
The key showdown might
have been the Coca Cola 600
against ABC's very highly pro-
moted indy 500 on Memorial
Day weekend. Indy pulled
about a 4.5 rating (some 7.5
million viewers); the 600 pulled
a 4.7 (some 7.6 million). And
those two races, which ran
back-to-back, were the tpp two
sports events of that TV week-
end. PeaT (iewing for the 600
(in prime time SundayYWas 6.1,
with nearly 10 million viewers.
The downside for the sea-
son's first four months: Fox says
that the male 18-34 demograph-
ic is down 7 percent and that
the male 18-49 demographic is
flat. The upside: Fox says that
male 25-54 is up 6 percent.
Even with the field for NASCAR's Chase for
the Championship expanded to 12, some big-
name drivers are in danger of not making it.
They include such drivers as perennial con-
tender and 2004 champ Matt Kenseth and Kurt
Busch. And two-time defending champion
Jimmie Johnson and four-time champ Jeff
Gordon are living on
the bubble, to make the
12-man September cut.
It wasn't that long
ago that Tony Stewart,
Greg Biffle and Carl
Edwards finished the I
championship run 1-2- ,
3 -- and then all three
failed to make the cut
the next season.
Kyle Busch and his Mike Mulhem
Toyota teammates at LapbyLap
Joe Gibbs' operation
are hot. Ford's Jack Roush has things finally
going his way; and Richard Childress does'
appear to have righted his ship, though -
Jeff Burton and Clint Bowyer are leading that
But elsewhere in the NASCAR garage, things
are very up-and-down.
Kasey Kahne, for example, had a dog of a
season in 2007, but has been hot for the past
Biffle is picking up steam, too, though he's
still looking for his first tour win since last
September at Kansas.
NASCAR's new car seems to have thrown a
wrench into everyone's playbook.
Edwards, despite his three quick wins, calls
the season "very strange."
"I think about it every day, every night
before I go to bed 'What can we do?'
"There are times you show up at a track
and you're just fast, everything is great.
Seeing it with Jimmie and Jeff, they were so
fast last year. Now they're not as fast. I don't
know whether they're having trouble. ..."
And were it not for a 100-point penalty at
Las Vegas and a 100-point loss in a Talladega
crash, Edwards would be sitting pretty..
"The thing about Kyle and his team run-
ninig so well right now is that, it's going to, be
hard to do that all year," Edwrds.said.. "So .
maybe they'll peak and we'll heat tfem like a
drum at the end of the yeai-.that's what I'm
"It's hard to stay on top all the time. I don't
think anyone has done that for a while."
With its new car, NASCAR has succeeded
in turning its Cup tour into an IROC series.
and that doesn't appear/to be for the better.
The new car is a Jekyll-and-Hyde creature.
Teams all have way too much horsepower.
Cut these engines by 200 horsepower and the
racing might pick up. And there might even
be a chance for independent teams to sur-
vive. Right now they don't have a prayer.
From the NASCAR perspective, the new car
is something of a success. It appears to be
safer, but the drivers say it's more erratic,
and they are uncomfortable, at best, trying to
pass. That's not good.
Consider Kenseth and Kurt Busch. They're
both former champions, both good "car" guys
- and they're both struggling.:
If this new car is a technical exercise, these
two guys should be at the head of the class.
Busch has one top-10 finish this season, and
that was at Daytona. Kenseth? Mr. Consistency
has one cp-five in' (puxnitnths:.-*
.. And hoV about iordortn w -tre's a real
stunner. Gordon won six tiiies last year, had an
amazing stretch run, and lost to an even more
etnazing Jimmie Johnson (whose own 2008 has
been a qualified disaster). Gordon has. not won
this season and is 10th in the points race.
Mike Mulhern has covered NASCAR for 35
