She also admitted cleaning up the scene. She
told the investigator he'd probably find a bloody
mop and bucket in the weeds outside the house and
some rags from the clean-up in a garbage bin..
She also told him where to find a spent shell cas-
ing that she found on the floor after the shooting.
She said she'd placed it in a trash can in the bath-
room after she found it. Cole also told the investi-
gator that, a day after the shooting, she'd sold an
unsuspectmg friend the semi-automatic 12-gauge
shotgun she'd used in the killing. .
Cole's daughter also testified at the trial, sobbing
at times as she described what her mother had told
her about the shooting a few days after the killing.
The teenager said her mother claimed Durden had
threatened.to kill her, threw her against a wall and
choked her shortly before the shooting took place.

On the opening day of the trial Tuesday, defense
attorney Walter Smith pointed out that Durden had

offense of domestic violence upon Cole, and
authorities have acknowledged that they had been
called to the Durden property on more than one
occasion over the years in relation to domestic dis-
turbances between the couple.
On the taped statement to the investigator, Cole
said that she felt "there was no other way out of
this'situation. Just it was a very, very hellacious
day and a hellacious relationship and a very aby-
sive relationship mentally and physically."

By the end of this week,
Green Circle BioEnergy will
have finished or nearly.,com-.
pleted its first round of tree-
cuttings in Jackson County.
The trees are being thinned
out of John Alter's planted
pine stands near Baspom,
and will be the first material
comiilg into the new opera-
tion's multi-million-dollar
production plant near
Cottondale.
There, the company will
reduce the trees to chips,
then crush those into tiny
flakes resembling cornmeal.
The flakes will then be

. bound together into small
WOOd pellets that will be uses
as alternative sources of
energy in combination with
coal. The pellets will be
.shipped to Europeatunarkets
for the co-firing process in
electrical power plants there,
and the method is expected
to reduce the use of fossil
fuels by 20 percent in enet-
gy-production process,
according to Green Circle
representative Danny Duce.
Construction on the 223~
acre pellet plant just off U.S.
231 began in February of last
year.

With its large directional arrow board
activated, the Vplvo was. directing traffic
toward the inside eastbound lane, and had a
large orange and white collision buffer
attached to the back.
The crash caused the Mack truck to jack-

obstructing the road.
A large fuel and oil spill resulting from
the crash made it necessary for the road to
be closed in that area for approximately
three hours.
Neither driver was seriously hurt, but
damage to the Mack was estimated at
$80,000 and damage to the Volvo at
$50,000 in the 9:54 a.m. crash.

Mainna Mad Dogs

BY DUSTIN KENT
FooRIDAN SPORis EDITOR
Marianna's Derrian Bell accepted
a Chipola Foundation Scholarship
Monday at Marianna High School
and will attend the school, while
joining the Indians basketball pro-
gram. .
Bell was the starting point guard
for the Bulldogi for the last three
seasons, helping the team reach the
3A state semifinals in his senior sea-
son. .
The scholarship, awarded to local
student-athletes, covers Bell's
tuition and books at Chipola.
Bell said he was thankful for the
scholarship and excited to be joining
one of the premier men's basketball
programs in the country.
"It means a lot to me because I'm
from here," he said. "Growing up
watching (Chipola) play, I always
wanted to be a part of a winning and
successful program like that. It's the
reason I chose to come here."
The fact that he doesn't have to

move away -for college is an added
benefit, according to Bell.
"My family is happy because I'm
close to home," he said. "They're
just as happy as I am. They feel pret-
ty good about it."
Bell's high school coach, Travis
Blanton, said he was excited for his
former point guard.
"It's a huge accomplishment for
Derrian and his family, as well as for
Marianna basketball," the coach
said. "It's just an honor to know that
. Derrian will get to further his career
at such a fine educational facility,
not to mention how well-coached
he'll be by .(Chipola coach Greg
Heiar) and his staff.
"I think he'll be a great asset and
fit in well because he's going to
work very hard. It's a big blessing
for Derrian and I'm really excited
for him and his family."
Bell said that he'll look back on
his career at MHS fondly, particular-
ly the final four trip his club was
able to take last season, fulfilling a
pledge he and his fellow seniors

Marianna's Derrian Bell signs a scholarship to attend Chipola College

made to their coach as freshmen.
"I just feel like this team set a big
example for the guys playing (for
MHS) now," Bell said. "I just feel
really proud about it and I really
want to be an example for the play-
ers upcoming, so they'll have some-
thing to look forward to, a goal to
reach for."
"When Derrian was a 10th grad-

er," Blanton said, "I told him and his
:parents that he was goitig to be our
point guard for next three yearsand
throw him to wolves,
"That's what we did and he
responded in a positive way and led
us to state final four, which was his
.goal from freshman year. He was a
real vital part ofwhat we did and our
accomplishments."
