A man who led officers on a
foot chase through the woods
Saturday was eventually captured
and multiple charges resulting
from that incident have been
added to other offenses with
which he was already accused,
according to Marianna Police
Department reports.
Authorities say 22-year-old
Michael Jerome Benbow Jr. fled
from a car that had been pulled
over Saturday by a Marianna offi-
cer who recognized him as a per-
son being sought on active war-
rants issued by Jackson County.
He got out of the vehicle near
the intersection of Old
Campbellton and Colonial roads
following a brief car-to-car pur-
suit that began after the officer
first attempted to pull the car over.
As the foot chase got under
way, the Jackson County Sheriffs

shore when he was struck. While others weie in
the water, they were not as far out as Bass, accord-

Florida Lt. Governor Jeff
Kottcamp visited Chipola
College Monday morning,
speaking briefly to a group
of invited guests about health
care, education and the ener-
gy ensis.
He talked about recent leg-
islation that is expected to
result in affordable health
care for those who cannot
currently afford full family
coverage.
According to him, there
are 2.8 nulhon people in the
state without health msur-
ance, a benefit he says can
cost $900 to $1,000 a month.
The legislation, he said
will soon result in new pri-
vate-company programs
available to people .19-64
years of age at a cost of $150
a month.
He said providers will
. have to bid to participate in
the market-driven program.
The new packages, he antici-
pates, could roll out in
January of 2009, and would
include provisions in family
programs that could protect a
child up to the age of 30 in a
covered household.
He said the legislation was

spearheaded by Gox. CharIle
Crist, and that it also means
that insurance will soon be
available to families with
autistic children who need
aggressive and costly thera-
py. That until-now uncovered""
expense can run to 5-15.000'
he said.
Kottcamp focused the rest
of his talk on the intertwined
topics of higher education
and the energy crisis.
The solution to one is lied
to the future of the other, he
said.
For Florida to be competi-
tive in the world economic
going forward, and to mole
away from dependence on
foreign sources of oil, he
said, colleges must gear their
degree programs to the need?
emerging in the fields of
high-tech science and engi-
neenng.
Development of alterna-
tive energy sources. as well a
more robust economy he
said, will require a top-norch
workforce that lures compa-
nies here to tap into the pool
of experts that Florida
schools can prepare for the
challenge.
He spoke specifically of
. aerospace technology, saying

SPECIAL TO THE FLORIDAN

Malone native James A.
Smith distinguished himself as
the 39th Postmaster of Los
Angeles, Calif., where he served
in that capacity for over seven
years before retiring and ending
a 44-year career with the United
States Postal Service (USPS)
earlier this year.
Often referred to as the
"Postmaster to the Stars"
because of the many celebrities
with whom he became familiar
as a result of the "Legends of
Hollywood" stamp series and
subsequent ceremonies, Smith
was not only on a first-name
basis with most of Los Angeles
elected officials and community
leaders, with whom he interact-
ed at important community
events, he was also considered a
friend among entertainers and
movie stars, alike.
During his career with the
USPS, Smith progressed through

8 Series of 17 consecutive assign-
ments with an ever-increasing
level of duties, responsibilities
and accountability.
At the time of his retirement,
he was responsible for the man-
agement of 12'i classified sta-
tions and branches in Los
Angeles, Calif., and the South
Bay, including the supervision
of 4,000 employees, handling
900,000 daily deliveries to four
million residents and 100,000
businesses in a 540 square mile
area. He also planned and man-
aged an annual budget exceed-
ing $400 million.
"My focus has been to exceed
customers' expectations," Smith
said before announcing his
retirement. "I wanted to make it
easy for our customers to do
business with us and believe that
part of good service is having
access to not only. postal prod-
ucts and services but also to
postal employees, craft, and

The last week of each semester is demanding and sometimes
nerve-wracking for college students, as papers are due and final
exams are eminent. But for the students at the Baptist College
of Florida (BCF) in Graceville, there is one night during finals
week that gives them a much-needed break, nourishment for
their bodies and fellowship "Midnight Breakfast with the
President."

Thomas A. Kitchen, BCF Senior Vice President R.C. Hammack
and BCF Vice President for Development Charles R. Parker

semester over 150 exam-exhausted students gathered at the Lake
Vista dining hall for "Midnight Breakfast with the President."
Adorned with their tall, white chef hats and monogrammed
aprons, the administration welcomed each student, as they
served them grits, eggs, pancakes, sausage, bacon, gravy and
biscuit According toEBCF student Muapia Parrisha'It's jsustda

and the midnight breakfast is just what we need to ease the stress

"We just don't have enough money
for gas," said Davis.
Davis said 10 of the Marianna club's
members, and one Sneads High School
member, placed high enough at the.
state-level competition on Apni 13 to
go to nationals, and that the club has
worked hard raising money for the trip
to Myrtle Beach, S.C.
"We've been yard-salin' it, and
doing all sorts of different things to
raise money," said Davis. "We have
help from the school board paying for
the rooms and we've raised some

money, but with the way the price of
gas is right now, the transportation
would cost us over $5,000."
The MHS Beta Club has done its
share of helping the community.
The honors service organization has
participated in Super Bowl of Caring
by gathering food donations; and
adopted five senior citizens and two
families for Christmas. The club has
also actively participated in March of
Dimes, and held a cookout for students
who' went referral-free through the
school year, said Davis.

Now the club is hoping the commu-
nity will help them.
"Our community is so caring, that I
think if people just hear that we need
help, there are people and businesses
who will be compelled to do so. We'd
really be so grateful for it," said Davis.
The club members are scheduled to
leave for the event on June 13. The
event is scheduled June 19-22.
The following members are set to
compete: Lindy Thompson, Talent;
Katelyn Miller, Spelling; Dallin
Kelson, Math and Quiz Bowl; Justin
