By Lorie WardGlades County Property Appraiser On Oct. 16, the Property Tax Assessment Rolls were certi ed to Gail Jones, Glades County tax collector. She has asked that I let you know that she will be mailing your tax bills on Oct. 31. Last year, I provided you with general information about the Glades County Property Tax Assessment Rolls, along with the value trend. Many of you let me know By Alphonso SmithSpecial to the Glades County Democrat The unfortunate fortunate: The terriers of Moore Haven rolled the Firebirds of Doral Academy on Oct. 17 at Joe Brown Stadium in Moore Haven with a 41-26 victory. The Terriers (2-6) were extremely happy to have their three-headed monster back and healthy for Friday night's contest. Unfortunately for the Terriers, they have only had that three-headed monster healthy and together for three games this year. Senior running back Markeis Hallback, senior quarterback Bronson Bass, and junior athlete D'Angelo Ware carried the load for the terriers. Ware had the game of his life with 601 total yards, with signi cant yards in every phases of the game. Not to mention, he scored every single point for the Terriers with ve touchdowns. Ware had six catches for 205 yards and two touchdowns; 10 carries for 186 yards and one touchdown; 3 returns for 148 yards, one touchdown, one interception with a 52-yard return for a touchdown and 10 passing yards. Senior running back Markeis Hallback assisted with 15 carries for 138 yards and 13 bone-crushing tackles. Senior Quarterback Bronson Bass completed nine of 14 pass attempts, nishing with 218 total yards, two ints, and two TDs. A Trap is Side-Stepped: A Door is OpenedBY REV. SAMUEL S. THOMAS, PH. D.+ Saint Martin’s ChurchI had apparently annoyed someone who was asking questions. He was asking about a date when I had delivered a package; I couldn’t recall. My answer was, “All I remember was that it was a hot summer’s day.” He asked, “When does summer begin?” I replied, “June 21.” He went on to add that it must have been after that date! No, I was using “a hot summer’s day” to describe the kind of day; I didn’t remember the actual day. Those around me accepted my rst statement: I didn’t really remember the exact day and that was what I was trying to convey. My inquisitor was in a Biblical tradition! There is a dialog between Jesus and some Sadducees in Luke’s gospel which re ects the same kind of challenge. Sometimes, people ask questions not to seek information but to somehow disprove what another has just said. Luke begins his account between Jesus and the Sadducees (Luke 20:27ff) by saying, “Some Sadducees, those who say there is no resurrection…” and their questioning Jesus about resurrection. It was from the older Mosaic law where, if a man dies, his wife will be married by his brother. Apparently, like the song says, “What’s love got to do with it?” Nothing, according to Moses law! In the case cited, this poor woman has this happen to her seven times! The brothers all die, one by one, and she gets to be married to all seven of them. It was a polygamous time in those days: remember Solomon and his 600 wives? (I guess it afforded a certain amount of protection and took place long before insurance provided for those left behind!) It seems, though, that the Sadducees weren’t concerned about the welfare of the woman; they asked Jesus “Finally the woman also died, In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? (v.32)” It’s obvious they aren’t interested in just an answer. Luke begins by pointing out that the Sadducees do not believe in the resurrection, “… those who say there is no resurrection…” The question is only to set up a dif cult situation for those who believe in it. Jesus uses the opportunity to expound on an understanding of the life to come -the resurrected life -and avoid the pitfall of his would-be detractors, “…and in the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage for they are like angels(v.35).” It was ignorance on the part of the Sadducees that led to their question. Their limited understanding of “resurrection” kept them from knowing that their question was inappropriate and their effort to trap Jesus really led to a clari cation for the faithful. A good ending came from an attempt to refute the Lord. The faithful have always held “…until death do us part…” and I think that is a better alternative than the one offered by Moses where people get passed on to relatives with no say on their part or no respect for free will in choosing a life partner. Now, one is free to choose, if they so desire, to re-enter a new relationship with no disrespect to the former nor any guilt about wishing to start life anew. Some of the happiest marriages I have blessed have been between two widowed persons, both of whom have an understanding of the nature of what it takes to be married and without a “baggage” of bitterness that needs to be healed before undertaking such a commitment. The Good Shepherd had opened the door to His pronouncement, “I have come that they may have life, and have it more abundantly (John 10:10).” My own feeling is that this applies to many areas of our lives: living as best we can, doing the best we can, then moving forward without regret when one chapter or another comes to an end. I see the Lord as one who opens doors, gives a future, wants to see us make the best of whatever comes in life. That’s what faith can give. That is God’s gift to us. If you would like to contact Rev. Thomas about this column or have an idea for one, please send an email to fatherthomas@saintmartins-clewiston.org.Community AnnouncementCLEWISTON — Community Presbyterian Church, 407 Royal Palm, invites all to attend worship service at 11 a.m. each Sunday. Karson Turner, Chairman Hendry County Board of County Commissioners 7 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee October 30, 2014 Calls on CDC to step up preparedness supportGOVERNORS PRESS OFFICEAfter meeting with of cials from the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, as well the Florida Department of Health, the Agency for Health Care Administration and the Division of Emergency Management, Governor Rick Scott made it clear that Florida is not waiting on the federal government for the state to prepare its citizens for a potential case of Ebola. Governor Scott also urged the federal government to add Florida airports to the list of airports that have increased federal safety steps. Governor Scott said, "We are thankful we do not have a case of Ebola in Florida and we hope we never do. But, my top priority is making sure that Florida stays safe. The CDC and the federal government have already admitted that they have failed to get ahead of the spread of Ebola in other states and we aren't going to let that happen in Florida. We are not going to simply wait for the federal government to be prepared. We are taking action. "Today, we are demanding the attention of the CDC and the federal government to ensure we have what we need to be prepared to respond and keep our state safe. The federal government should add Florida airports to the list of airports that are implementing additional screening for passengers. At this time, ve US airports have implemented these additional screenings, and Florida airports should be included." Governor Scott has taken the following actions to enhance Florida's preparedness efforts: On October 12, Florida Hospitals were asked to establish mandatory Ebola training programs to protect healthcare professionals. To date, 46 hospitals have noti ed ACHA that they have completed this healthcare professional training. ACHA is continuing to follow up daily with hospitals to ensure the training is complete. The Department of Health has also identi ed $1.25 million in federal grant funding that Florida will immediately use to buy high-level Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) and other equipment to enhance preparedness efforts. The Florida National Guard is now ramping up its preparedness efforts by setting up two Rapid Response teams that will be able to provide healthcare services for any potential Ebola cases in Florida. Governor Scott has asked the federal government for the following actions: Florida has asked for 30 testing kits so the state is ready to conduct tests on any cases that healthcare of cials believe could be Ebola. To date, the CDC has only offered three. Florida has asked federal of cials for over $7 million in federal funds to be redirected so the state can purchase additional high-level personal protective equipment for healthcare workers as well as other Ebola preparedness supplies. Governor Scott has asked the CDC to expand their contact of airline passengers to include all passengers who traveled on the same plane as Dallas nurse Amber Joy Vinson for the full 24 hours after her ight. Within 24 hours of Amber's ight with a low-grade fever, the plane made ve additional stops including one into and one out of Fort Lauderdale Airport. As of the Governor's brie ng this morning in Fort Lauderdale, the CDC has not ful lled any of Florida's requests and he is now asking them publicly to support Florida in these important preparedness efforts. ‘Florida is Not Waiting on the Federal Government to be Prepared for Ebola’“THE CDC AND THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAVE ALREADY ADMITTED THAT THEY HAVE FAILED TO GET AHEAD OF THE SPREAD OF EBOLA...”GOVERNOR RICK SCOTT Average retail gasoline prices in Florida have fallen 7.5 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.05/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 8,237 gas outlets in Florida. This compares with the national average that has fallen 3.7 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.05/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com. Including the change in gas prices in Florida during the past week, prices yesterday were 24.9 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 22.7 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. "You know, I wonder if gas stations will run out of 2's to use on their signs because they can't remember where they put them all," said GasBuddy.com senior petroleum analyst Patrick DeHaan. "It's been a long time since we've seen this many stations nationally under $3/gallon -nearly four years. The best part is that Americans are saving a staggering amount of money -almost $110 million a day -versus what was being spent at the pump a year ago. We're quickly approaching 70,000 gas stations in the U.S. selling under $3/gallon versus around 7,500 stations one year ago. But while prices will continue declining in most areas across the country, there is some bad news for motorists in the nation's midsection -mainly the Plains states -but the issue may trickle over into a few neighboring states. There has been some supply tightness surrounding seasonal re nery work that's causing wholesale prices in that region to rise. While the problem is temporary and may last a couple weeks, we want to inform motorists in that area that they may notice prices rising, but it is a short term problem, not a long term one." DeHaan noted. Gas Price Update

Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee October 30, 2014 10 For the second year in a row, the South Central Florida Express (SCFE) railroad has been nationally recognized with the Jake Safety Award. This safety award was presented by the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) in recognition of SCFE’s outstanding safety record in 2013. The company also received the Jake Safety Award for its outstanding safety record in 2012. “This award recognizes and reinforces the importance that we place on maintaining high safety and professional standards throughout all our railroad operations,” said Judy Sanchez, senior director of corporate communications and public affairs “We continue to make investments in increased safety training programs and in upgrading our locomotives and tracking devices to further improve our railroad operations.” Sanchez said that each SCFE employee will receive an individual Jake Award pin in recognition of the vital role each plays in helping the company establish and maintain a safe workplace. Since its inception in 1995, the Jake Safety Award Program has evolved into the premier safety award in the short line rail community. This safety award program was created by and named for Lowell S. “Jake” Jacobson, a former Railway Age Magazine’s Railroader of the Year. Jake started giving these awards, out of his own pocket, to recognize outstanding safety achievements in the short line railroad industry, which had gone unrecognized before. In 1999, the ASLRRA Safety Committee adopted the Jake Awards and since then, has continued Mr. Jacobson’s legacy of rewarding and drawing attention to the high safety standards of the small railroad industry. Sanchez said that SCFE employees were also recognized in a letter from U.S. Sugar President and CEO Robert H. Buker Jr., congratulating the employees and railroad operations team on an excellent safety record and for receiving this important Jake Safety Award for the second straight year. Florida Express Receives Award FIREHOUSE COMMUNITY THEATREThe Firehouse Community Theatre proudly presents this year’s opening production, Marrying Walt, written by James Danek and directed by Mike Shough. Marrying Walt is presented by special arrangement with James Danek. Mary and Walt live together in a senior mobile home village in Florida -he, long-divorced, and she, widowed. Walt’s gol ng buddy, a Catholic priest, mentions that another couple is getting married and asks Mary and Walt to be witnesses. She refuses, but asks Walt to marry her secretly in Las Vegas. This sets off chaos amidst a welcome home party, with Walt dumpster diving for his lost savings and his daughter arriving to take him “home” with her. Marrying Walt stars Janice Groves, Doug Patterson, Barbara McDowell, Bob Speckin, Travis Dowhen, Brenda Barnes and Elijah Luckey. Linda Patterson is the stage manager. Marrying Walt runs for two weekends. Show times, opening weekend, are: Friday, Oct. 31 and Saturday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. Show times, second weekend, are: Friday, Nov. 7 and Saturday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased for this show by calling the hotline at 863-675-3066 or by visiting our website at www. rehousecommnitytheatre.com. The u virus is creeping around. If you get the u, it can cause you misery for over a week! It can make you miss work, school and activities that you enjoy. Many providers in the area offer the u shot at a reasonable rate. The money you spend getting the u shot will out-weigh the costs of lost time from work should you get the u. Remember, if you do get sick, please stay home! You don’t want to take the risk of infecting others! The top three reasons you should get your u shot: Protects You and Other People – Getting a u shot not only protects you from getting the u, but you are also protecting your family, friends, co-workers or anyone that you may come in contact with. Prevent Severe Illness – Over 200,000 people are hospitalized every year from u-related complications. Kids under two years of age and adults over 65 years of age are more likely to be hospitalized from the effects of the u. Prevent Flu-Related Deaths – Each year, over 36,000 people in the U.S. die because of the u. Most of these deaths are infants and people aged 65 and older. More people die from the u than from any vaccine-preventable disease. Remember to wash your hands often. Try not to touch your eyes, nose and mouth until you’ve washed your hands thoroughly. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Discard the tissue in the trash and wash your hands immediately afterwards. If you do get the u, stay home, get plenty of rest, drink plenty of liquids and avoid alcohol and tobacco use. Talk to your doctor about recommendations for getting a u shot. Remember that it takes up to two weeks to provide protection after you get the shot. Protect yourself. Protect your family and friends. Get Vaccinated! Don’t Let The Flu Sneak Up!
