Governor’s Press Of ceGovernor Rick Scott announced the funding of the third and largest set of early restoration projects, as approved by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill Natural Resource Damage Assessment Trustees. Nearly $88 million represents 28 projects, which will take place throughout many communities along the Panhandle. Additionally, two U.S. Department of the Interior projects will take place at Gulf Islands National Seashore in Escambia County and total approximately $15 million. Governor Scott said, “Today’s announcement of more than $100 million in funding is great news for families in the Panhandle. We must protect our state’s natural treasures so future generations of Floridians will be able to enjoy our state’s great natural treasures.” Across the ve Gulf States, $627 million will be allocated to implement 44 projects that will continue restoration of the natural resources and associated lost recreational services, which were affected by the spill. This third phase of early restoration includes many proposals suggested by Florida citizens, such as oyster and scallop Moore Haven High SchoolThe Florida Athletic Coaches Association “Athletic Program of the Year” was presented to Moore Haven Jr.-Sr. High school in classi cation 3A/2A Public. This achievement is the highest degree of success in athletics for any school during the 2013/14 school year. Evaluation in each sport (boys and girls) is based on a predetermined point system. Moore Haven received the most points and received the Carey E. McDonald Award. Point SystemAthletic teams were scored for this award the following way: beginning with the District Runner-up and moving right to the State Champion, you are to score only the highest level of achievement. In other words, if you were the District Champion and the State Champion in Football, you would only score yourself 30 points in the box under State Champs. For all the teams that were not as competitive, they put two points down for each sport you offer at your school and six points for each sport Thursday, October 9, 2014 Vol. 86, No. 36 Kick Off Campaign ‘A Walk on the Wild Side’ ... Their business hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. They offer shopping and retail, such as shoes, bags, jewelry, household items and home decorum. On Saturday, Oct. 11, the Brass Monkey will be having an open house with baked items and hot dogs and would like to invite everyone to attend. restoration, seagrass restoration, arti cial reefs, living shorelines, recreational beach restoration and state park improvements. Public comment was essential to the development of the nal plan and projects. On April 20, 2011, BP agreed to provide $1 billion in early restoration funds to the Natural Resource Damage Assessment Trustees for early restoration projects. The Department of Environmental Protection and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission have trustee representatives for the state of Florida. With the third phase of early restoration, Florida's portion, $100 million, will be completely funded; however, state of cials will continue to participate in developing projects for the federal agencies to propose for implementation in Florida. Senate President Don Gaetz said, "My hope and that of all Northwest Floridiansis that these projects selected by local leaders will produce a true return-oninvestment and be managed with careful stewardship." Representative Clay Ingram said, "I am excited that six projects have been approved for Escambia County, and I applaud Governor Scott and FDEP Secretary Vinyard for their continued work to restore Florida's Gulf Coast, which was so badly damaged as a result of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill." "I am proud of the work that is being done to restore Florida's Gulf Coast," said DEP Secretary Herschel T. Vinyard Jr. "We will continue to work with the local communities on implementing these projects and look forward to future restoration." "I have been impressed with the coordination of both DEP and FWC on creating a suite of projects that will positively impact the Panhandle," said Escambia County Commissioner and President of the Florida Association of Counties Grover Robinson. "One of the boat ramps in the rst phase of early restoration projects, Mahogany Mill, took an adverse legacy and turned it into an environmental asset for our county. I look forward to many more signi cant improvements for our Gulf Coast communities." Santa Rosa County Commissio ner Lane Lynchard said, "The Santa Rosa projects approved today demonstrate an additional step forward in our long term recovery from the oil spill. These projects, as well as others to come, will have a lasting, positive impact on our environment." Walton County Commissioner Sara Comander said, "I am excited the Trustees have approved the Walton County projects as well as other regional projects bene tting our county, which will allow visitors and residents to make the most of our beautiful natural resources." "We are very pleased the third set of early restoration projects have been approved," said FWC Executive Director Nick Wiley. "These projects will enhance important sheries and help Florida retain its prominence as the Fishing Capital of the World." Early restoration represents an initial step in recovery. In the rst two phases of early restoration, the state of Florida proposed a dune restoration project, four boat ramp enhancements in Escambia County and two coastal conservation projects that are taking place across many Panhandle counties. There has already been much accomplished by these projects and it is expected that the third phase will bring further successful restoration to the Gulf Coast communities. Assessment of injuries to our Gulf's natural resources is still ongoing and ultimately, the responsible parties are obligated to compensate the public for the full scope of natural resource injuries caused by the spill. Other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States. It is also one of the leading causes of cancer death among women of all races. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 200,000 new cases of breast cancer are reported nationwide each year and more than 40,000 women died from the disease. About 11 percent of all new cases of breast cancer in the U.S. are found in women that are younger than 45 years of age. It is estimated that one of every eight adult women will get breast cancer in her lifetime. When breast cancer starts out, it is too small to feel and does not cause signs and symptoms. As it grows, however, breast cancer can cause changes in how the breast looks or feels. Symptoms may include: New lump in the breast or underarm (armpit). Thickening or swelling of part of the breast. Irritation or dimpling of breast skin. Redness or aky skin in the nipple area or the breast. Pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area. Nipple discharge other than breast milk, including blood. Any change in the size or the shape of the breast. Pain in any area of the breast. Breast cancer can be preventable with early detection. It is recommended that all women from the ages 50 to 74 should have a mammogram every two years, and women between the ages of 40 and 50 years should talk with their health care provider about when to start screening. It may be necessary for you to have earlier screening or more frequent screening if you have a family history of breast cancer. Please get to know your family health history. If a close family member (such as your mother, father, grandmother, sister, or aunt) has had breast cancer, the risk for other family members getting breast cancer may be higher. If you think you may be at increased risk, talk to your health care provider. It may be decided that you should be tested earlier or more frequently than the standard recommendations. Are you worried about the cost? CDC offers free or low-cost mammograms. For more information about breast cancer and low-cost mamorgrams, go to www.cdc. gov/cancer/breast. BY BUTCH WILSON Clewiston MuseumThe calloused ngers of the carver moved across the cypress dugout with the nesse of a maestro pianist, stroking and tapping the smooth, polished sides for tones or aws that would indicate hull weaknesses. Finding no defects in his craftsmanship, the carver now gazed at the high, protruding bow that arched downward, forming two, long, perpendicular sides that met at the stern. Its high bow and lean, graceful sides were birthed for seaworthiness and speed on an inland sea called Lake Okeechobee. Who were these ancient people that once traveled on liquid highways in a watery world now called the Everglades? Spanish explorers, who met these people centuries ago in the vast everglades, documented their encounters. However, the sparse information that later scholars gleaned from these too few Spanish journals sometimes created more questions than answers. Only in recent years, have archaeologists started lling in some of the missing links on these mysterious people that time forgot. Come join us at the Clewiston Museum as archeologist Katie Smith shares discoveries from the ongoing research she is conducting on the skeletal biology of the Belle Glade Culture. Her ndings are based on the Belle Glade skeletal collections held at the Smithsonian Institution. Miss Smith’s interest in archaeology started at the age of 12, with Classical/Biblical Archaeology and particularly ancient languages. She later pursued a career in archaeology through undergraduate coursework in Palestinian, GrecoRoman, Ancient Hebrew, Greek and Latin archaeology. Miss Smith is currently pursuing her second Master’s degree as a graduate student at Florida Atlantic University. This free and informative program is made possible by a grant from the Florida Humanities Council. Refreshments will be served after the program, so come join us at the Clewiston Museum for a relaxing and entertaining evening on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. Please contact the Clewiston Museum at 863-983-2870 or email us at clewistonmuseum@embarqmail.com for questions regarding this event. Dawkins, Tweets, and Downs SyndromeBY DR. TODD BUCK First Baptist Church of ClewistonThe atheist Richard Dawkins is in the news again. It seems he cannot keep his ngers from the twitter machine. This time "The God Delusion" author immersed himself in hot water for stating (by tweet) that it would be immoral to not abort a baby if the mother knew that her unborn child had Downs Syndrome. He wrote: "Abort it and try again. It would be immoral to bring it into the world if you have the choice." This week, he apologized, saying that of course he respected other people's wishes. One wonders -given the worldview that Dawkins represents -that if evolution really is true, as he suggests, and the universe is a cosmic accident, then his own brain (and not Downs Syndrome) is proof positive that evolution makes mistakes. Given enough time, non-conscious material is capable of evolving into a pompous, hateful and stubborn crackpot who should have retired from public pronouncements while he still had the chance to avoid embarrassing himself. Dawkins, in 2014, has become a gure of mockery, a man so convinced that he possesses God-like powers of omniscience that he can't understand why everyone's getting angry at him for pointing out the "obvious." Why won't we all just learn how to think!? Thinking is all it takes! Especially, if we just surrender and think like him! Dawkins has become a man so convinced of his intellectual superiority that he believes the one domain in which he happens to be an expert -science -is the only legitimate way of acquiring knowledge. All of his outbursts in recent years follow from this belief: he understands the scienti c method as a universally applicable way of understanding not just the physical world but literally everything else, as well. Hence, his constant complaint that those appalled by his bigoted and hate- lled ramblings must be religionists of the Dark Ages. In his review of "The God Delusion," Terry Eagleton remarked: "Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology." But it is not just theology that Dawkins dismisses as inferior to his own scienti c mind, but also art, history, philosophy and human logic. To him, all of the humanities are expendable window-dressings, and even the emotions of fellow human beings are byproducts of natural selection that seem a nuisance. If Dawkins can't see it, then it doesn't exist, and anyone trying to describe it to him is delusional and possibly dangerous. One might hope that as he gets older and crankier, that the process will end with a breakthrough and a glorious deathbed conversion. But if there's one thing Dawkins has tried to impress upon us, it's that miracles don't exist. So perhaps we should do him the courtesy of not holding our breath. Does your interest include working with a dynamic partnership to create a tobacco-free Glades County? If yes, then Glades Tobacco-Free Partnership wants you! Glades Tobacco-Free Partnership is a community collaborative of health care providers, health advocates, youth leaders, business leaders, civic groups and citizens who support a tobacco-free Glades County. The partnership seeks to reduce tobaccorelated death, disease and disability in the community, and the acceptability of tobacco use through a combination of community education, youth advocacy and changes in local tobacco policies. Presently, 88 Floridians lose their lives each day to the diseases caused by tobacco use. Moreover, health care costs for those feeling the effects of tobacco-related illnesses account for $96 billion per year in the United States. The tobacco industry solicits and recruits new users in deceitful and harmful ways and particularly targets our youth. The Glades Tobacco-Free Partnership is seeking energetic community members, organizations, local businesses and any other persons or groups to get involved, spread the mission and set the tone for our community's take on tobacco! For more information or to become involved, please join us at our quarterly advertised partnership meetings or contact Teresa Coco, health educator consultant, at 863-946-0707. Together, we can help create a healthier community!Invitation to Hope ConnectionsBuckhead Ridge seniors are invited to Hope Connections. This compares with the national average that has fallen 2.5 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.30/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com. Including the change in gas prices in Florida during the past week, prices yesterday were unchanged compared to the same day one year ago and are 3.8 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 13.8 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 5.8 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago. “We’ve begun to see retail prices eroding at a much faster rate in the last few days across a good portion of the country,” said GasBuddy. com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. “48 out of 50 states saw average prices decline in the last week, with some of the largest declines in the Midwest, where more and more stations are slipping under the $3/gallon barrier. Motorists should be seeing continued drops in gas prices across much of the United States in the week ahead as gas prices catch up to the recent decrease in crude oil prices.” U.S. Sugar CorporationU.S. Sugar’s 84th annual sugarcane harvest, scheduled to begin Tuesday evening, was delayed until mid-afternoon Wednesday, October 1st and got off to an extremely slow and soggy start due to excessive rainfall. “More than a week of rain dumped nearly eight inches across the farming area, with standing water in many of our elds, said Judy Sanchez, senior director, corporate communications and public affairs. “The wet conditions will slow and hamper harvest activities until the weather clears up.” Harvest began Wednesday shortly after 2 p.m. on a limited basis in Palm Beach County, with no harvest activities in Hendry or Glades counties due to wet conditions. The Clewiston Sugar Factory began processing the rst railcars of sugarcane at 6:36 p.m. Wednesday evening. Both harvesting and processing operations will run 24 hours a day, seven days a week during the 2014-15 harvest season. The harvest season is expected to run until early April 2015. “We’ve had good weather for most of this growing season and are expecting a good crop,” said Judy Sanchez. “Unfortunately, sugar prices have been severely depressed for the last few years due to a surge of unneeded, subsidized Mexican sugar into our marketplace. Over two million tons of subsidized Mexican sugar has ooded the U.S. markets, a signi cant portion of it produced at Mexican governmentowned facilities.” Sanchez said that U.S. Sugar had sold all of its 2014-15 sugar at lower prices caused by the ood of subsidized Mexican imports and would have to rely on volume and ef ciencies during the harvesting, milling and re ning process to retain pro tability during this crop. U.S. Sugar and its independent growers are projected to produce approximately 7.23 million tons of sugarcane with approximately 6.5 million tons of sugarcane to be processed at the Clewiston Sugar Factory that is projected to produce approximately 743,403 tons of raw sugar. Through the acquisitions of Duda in 2012 and, more recently, Knight Management, U.S. Sugar also will be sending sugarcane to all three of the other sugar factories in the Glades this year. Sanchez noted that U.S. Sugar’s 2013-2014 sugarcane crop produced 759,378 tons of sugar, nearly 40 million gallons of molasses and 192,563 MW-hrs of electricity. “While Florida sugar farmers are busy gearing up for the harvest season, we are also continuing our partnership in Everglades restoration by cleaning the water on the farms every single day,” Sanchez said. “Our on-farm clean up measures, called Best Management Practices (BMPs), have reduced the phosphorus in water leaving the farms by 63% this year. That’s more than twice the 25% requirement, and farmers have averaged a 55% reduction for nearly 20 years,” said Sanchez.
