Individuals thinking of starting a small farm or who want to know about the latest in local foods, organic and hydroponic production, livestock production, farmers markets and more, might consider attending the Florida Small Farms and Alternative Enterprises Conference. Like last year, about 800 people are expected to attend the conference from Aug. 1 to 2 at Osceola Heritage Park, 1875 Silver Spur Lane in Kissimmee, said Jose Perez, small farms specialty crop statewide program coordinator and the event’s publicity chairman. Now in its sixth year, the conference is presented by the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences and Florida A&M University. Typically, those who attend include small family, transitional, beginning and experienced farmers; allied-industry representatives; educators; researchers; policy makers; small farm commodity associations; foundations and others dedicated to strengthening Florida’s smallfarm community. Ed Skvarch, commercial horticulture extension agent in St. Lucie County, said those pondering farming can learn much of its business side at the conference. “If you’re starting a small farm, I believe it is crucial to have passion, the technical knowledge on how to grow vegetables or raise livestock and a working plan on By Gary BitnerBrighton Seminole Reservation Members of the Seminole Tribe – the rst Floridians – are embracing their state’s agriculture as part of a product and marketing strategy to further expand a successful cattle operation, ranked as one of the nation’s largest. The Seminoles recently invited a select group of cattle industry experts and journalists to the Brighton Seminole Reservation, where the Tribe maintains the largest portion of its cattle herd across a vast 36,000-acre reservation. The group of nearly two dozen industry leaders enjoyed a series of presentations on the Tribe’s cattle operation and Seminole Pride™ Beef, a brand developed to showcase the quality of the Tribe’s 100 percent Florida-bred cattle. The Tribe also used the opportunity to lay out its recent business expansion into Noble juices, OWV™ spring water, Intermezzo™ wine, fresh fruit and seafood. Product samples were given out to underscore the reality of the Tribe’s extensive business diversi cation program, led by the Board of Directors of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, Inc. But the major focus of the day was on the Seminole Pride™ Beef business. The Thursday, July 24, 2014 Vol. 86, No. 25 See Page 3 for information on how to contact the newspaper. With help from the community, hundreds of Southwest Florida children and teens can experience the excitement of going back to school. About Children’s Home Society On the front lines since 1902, Children’s Home Society of Florida is the oldest and largest statewide organization devoted to helping children and families. Children’s Home Society of Florida offers services that help break the cycles of abuse in more families, heal the pain for traumatized children, guide teens to successfully transition into adulthood and create strong, loving families through adoption. SAMUEL S. THOMAS, PH. D.+ Saint Martin’s ChurchThere’s that television ad that tells people that words can hurt. It’s about a cowboy and his girl, and she reaches out to him. He looks down from his horse and says, “I’m a loner, and loners have to be alone.” He rides off, not getting too far before being thrown off of his horse. I thought that “maybe his horse is a loner too, and the horse wants to be left alone!” In fact, there is something about being alone that goes against the grain with many people. Penal systems recognize that, somehow, it’s worse to be locked up in “solitary con nement.” Parents isolate children: “Go to your room.” It used to be punishment (before cell-phones, instant messaging, Tweet, Twitter, e-mail, Skype, and the rest of it). Maybe today, “Turn it off” will come to mean what once, “Go to your room” meant. There’ll be no computer, cell phone and staring at the screen. According to an account I heard, Albert Einstein was supposed to be met by an acquaintance who was late, leaving Einstein standing on the corner by himself alone for an unexpected interval. When the acquaintance nally arrived and apologized, Einstein replied “It’s alright, I was working.” He seemed to understand the concept of “redeeming the time” and putting idle moments to good use. He apparently wasn’t bothered by being alone. I remember some of the “idle moments” and forced times of inactivity and how I put them to good use. For many of us, and especially those living in communities such as one nds in the Glades, out-of-town trips are often (1) necessary and (2) long. What to do? Loneliness is maybe our inability to ll up time and leaves us with some anxiety about it all when we nd ourselves in a kind of “vacuum.” Instead, I’ve noted that when I’m busy, whether alone or with others, time ies by and there is no problem or anxiety. Jesus begins His ministry away from others; with 40 days in the wilderness and turns out to be confronted by the devil (Matthew 4:1-11). He ends it by leaving His disciples and going off with only a few others (Matthew 26:37; 26:42, 26:44; Mark 14:32ff; Luke 22:41) and perhaps being totally by Himself. Time is spent praying and preparing, being busy. He is by Himself but He is not alone. It is in the “redeeming the time” by being busy and doing what needs to be done that loneliness can be welcomed as a chance to accomplish, make headway, think things through, be about the business that needs to be done. It was early in my life that I learned never to say, “I’m bored!” Whenever my mother heard such a remark, she could instantly generate a list of things for me to do, and the majority were not things I would have chosen! There were rooms to clean up, things to put away, errands to run, items to be picked up, lots of things to keep me occupied. The lesson was that I was responsible for my own activities and that would take care of any idle moments or “boredom.” I didn’t always need others around but moments alone meant seeking something that would keep me occupied and interested on my own. Loneliness was time to be redeemed; time to put to use doing something worthwhile. Idle time was a gift to be used wisely. Hobbies and evening classes, knowing that moments waiting could be lled by reading or writing, doing something for someone who needed an errand or something repaired, praying and meditating; lots and lots of things to do to redeem the time and never be alone. I’ve often wondered about our current craze of instant contact on cell phones and other portable devices. Usually the conversation seems to be about ... nothing, really! Maybe it’s time once more that we learn to stand our own company and make better use of time, redeem it. Silence and being alone are not really an enemy; idleness, yes, loneliness, is a matter of choice. If you would like to contact Rev. The Green Heron is one of the few tool-using birds who will throw things into the water to attract sh. It is a bird species of least concern found throughout Florida in most freshwater and some saltwater habitats and in Florida's urban areas. Many winter south of the United States, but will nest between March and July throughout Florida. This small stocky dark heron has long yellowish legs and a long, dark, pointed bill. Its long neck is often kept pulled in tight to its body. This wading bird is shorter than most herons. Adults have a glossy, greenish-black cap, a greenish back and wings that are grey-black grading into green or blue. Their chestnut neck has a white line down the front. Juveniles are duller, with the head sides, neck and underparts streaked brown and white. Alarm calls are an explosive "skwow." Other calls include a series of "kukkuk-kuk-kuk" notes. Their diet consists of insects, spiders, snails, crustaceans, frogs and sh. They are often seen foraging from branches above water or standing motionless at water's edge waiting for sh to approach. They will nest in colonies with other herons and ibises, singly or in colonies with a few other pairs. Their nest is a basket of sticks that is placed in a small tree or shrub usually above water. Both parents take turns incubating two to six eggs which hatch in about 20 days. At 30 to 35 days of age, the young are no longer dependent upon their parents.STA-5 Trip InformationFor information about the upcoming STA-5 bird trips, contact Margaret England at sta5birding@embarqmail.com or call 863-674-0695 or 863-517-0202. Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee July 24, 2014 10 By Lisa SchnirringCIDRAP News The number of new chikungunya infections in the Caribbean region grew at a brisk pace last week, with most of the activity centered in the Dominican Republic and neighboring Haiti, as travel to those destinations continues to be linked to a number of imported cases in other countries. The outbreak total climbed to 306,837 suspected and con rmed cases, an increase of 42,393 from the previous week, according to a Jul 3 update from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). Nearly 30,000 of the new infections were reported in the Dominican Republic, while about 12,000 of them were reported in Haiti. The two countries make up the island of Hispaniola. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said in its weekly communicable disease threat update that most of the affected areas continue to report more cases, but the situation is especially severe on Hispaniola. New cases in Central America In Central America, health of cials in El Salvador reported 212 more suspected or con rmed cases, boosting its total so far to 1,520, according to PAHO. Elsewhere, El Salvador remains under a national emergency with thousands of suspected cases, PAHO said. It added that the outbreak is still expanding, having reached Central and South America. Over the past several weeks, three South American countries have reported local chikungunya cases: Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. So far it's unclear if a con rmed case in Costa Rica is local or imported, and health of cials in Venezuela aren't sure if all 12 chikungunya cases detected there are imported, the ECDC said. Guatemala is investigating a possible case, the agency added. According to PAHO's update, the number of deaths in the outbreak held steady at 21. Travel-linked cases rise steadily Two US territories were among the areas reporting new locally acquired cases. Puerto Rico reported 89 more suspected or con rmed chikungunya cases, lifting its total to 228. The U.S. Virgin Islands reported three more con rmed cases, edging its total to seven. Countries in the PAHO region reported 51 more imported chikungunya infections, raising the total so far to 162. Most of the cases were from areas that have already reported the disease in travelers. The exception is the Cayman Islands, which reported its rst travel-linked illness. Most of the imported cases continue to be reported from the United States, which has 114 chikungunya infections. Meanwhile, the ECDC said several other countries have recently reported chikungunya infections in people with a travel history to the outbreak areas. For example, it said Greece reported a case in a patient who was hospitalized in Athens after returning from a trip to the Dominican Republic. Boosting Chikungunya Cases Over 300,000 Photo by Daniel Loncarevic, iStock Never leave any child unattended in a vehicleFlorida Department of Highway Safety and Motor VehiclesThe Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is reminding everyone to take additional steps to ensure that no child is left unattended in a vehicle this summer. This year, there have been two reported cases in Florida of children dying of heatstroke after being left in cars. Don't be distracted when leaving your vehicle and take a second look in the back seat to ensure a child is not left behind. Getting into a car that has been sitting in the sun on a hot summer day in Florida can be unbearable. The inside of a vehicle can heat up by 20 degrees in just 10 minutes and cracking a window open does little to keep the vehicle cool. A child's body temperature can rise three to ve times faster than an adult's and heatstroke in a closed vehicle can occur when the temperature is as low as 57 degrees outside. For the safety of your children, never leave a child unattended in a vehicle, even for a short period of time. Florida law makes it a criminal offense to leave a child under the age of 6 unattended in a vehicle. Tips for preventing heatstroke deaths in vehicles: Never leave any child unattended in a vehicle. Put something in the back seat that you will need at your nal destination like a purse, briefcase, cell phone or shoe that will remind you to look in the back seat. If you see a child unattended in a vehicle, call 911. After checking to make sure your vehicle is empty, always lock it and teach children not to play in vehicles. Pets are also susceptible to heatstroke if left unattended in a closed vehicle as well. A study by researchers at San Francisco State University showed that, on average, 38 children die each year as a result of heatstroke after being left in a closed vehicle. Since 1998, 66 child heatstroke deaths have occurred in Florida for this reason, more than any other state.About Florida Department of Highway SafetyThe Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles provides highway safety and security through excellence in service, education and enforcement. 11 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee July 24, 2014 how to grow the business,” Skvarch said. “Most beginning farmers I work with have the passion and possess some knowledge of growing vegetables; however, what they lack is a plan on how to grow their business. All three are important.” In addition to teaching participants how to start a farm, the conference raises awareness about Florida’s small farms industry, Perez said. Participants must register to attend the conference. This year, organizers are hosting three tours: urban farming, farm-to-chef and livestock, Perez said. The urban farming and farm-to-chef tours are already full, but the livestock tour remains open, he said. The conference features vendor exhibits, a signature luncheon featuring local food and about 20 breakout sessions. New sessions this year include: Goat, poultry, beef and dairy production management and regulations; Management, trends and opportunities in hydroponic production; Transitioning to organic production and fertility management for organic farms; Weed identi cation and management, and soil management; Training for farmers’ market managers and online farmers’ markets; Practical sessions on identifying diseases and pests; and, An Extension Learning Zone, where farmers will work with urban and hydroponic production systems. FROM THIS, HAPPINESS IN BOTH THE SHORT TERM AND THE LONG TERM FOR BOTH YOURSELF AND OTHERS WILL COME. DALAI LAMA Florida Department of HealthThe Florida Department of Health in Hendry and Glades Counties urges residents and visitors with certain health conditions to avoid eating raw oysters and exposing open wounds to seawater and estuarine water, which may harbor bacteria called Vibrio vulni cus. Vibrio vulni cus occurs naturally in warm coastal waters, particularly during the summer months, and has the potential to cause serious illness. Thoroughly cooking oysters, either by frying, stewing, or roasting can help to eliminate harmful bacteria and viruses in the meat. Consuming raw oysters that have undergone a post-harvest treatment process to eliminate the bacteria can also reduce the risk of illness. If you have wounds, cuts or scratches and wade in estuarine areas or seawater where the bacteria might be present, you can become ill. Symptoms of Vibrio vulni cus in wound infections typically include swelling, pain and redness at the wound site. Other symptoms of Vibrio vulni cus infection include: nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, chills, and the formation of blistering skin lesions. Individuals experiencing these symptoms should contact their healthcare provider immediately for diagnosis and treatment. Individuals with liver disease, including Hepatitis C and cirrhosis, are most at risk for developing serious illness from Vibrio vulni cus obtained from eating raw oysters. Others who should avoid consuming raw shell sh are those with hemochromatosis (iron overload), diabetes, cancer, stomach disorders or any illness or treatment that weakens the immune system. A total of 41 cases of Vibrio vulni cus were reported during 2013 and there have been six cases reported so far this year (four cases due to the infection of an open wound and two cases from consuming raw shell sh). By Pat DobbinsFlorida Department of Health The Florida Department of Health in Hendry and Glades Counties cautions those who swim frequently in Florida’s lakes, rivers and ponds during warm temperatures about the possible presence of Naegleria fowleri. Contact and infection with this amoeba is rare, but the organism targets a person’s brain and usually results in death. Adverse health effects on humans can be prevented by avoiding nasal contact with the waters, since the amoeba enters through the nasal passages. Since 1962, there have been 34 reported cases of Naegleria fowleri or “brain-eating amoeba” in Florida. It can cause Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM) disease which usually leads to death once a person becomes infected. As a precaution, health of cials provide the following guidance: Avoid water-related activities in bodies of warm freshwater, hot springs and thermally polluted water such as water around power plants. Avoid water-related activities in warm freshwater during periods of high water temperature and low water levels. Hold the nose shut or use nose clips when taking part in water-related activities in bodies of warm freshwater such as lakes, rivers, or hot springs. Avoid digging in or stirring up the sediment while taking part in water-related activities in shallow, warm freshwater areas. Please note exposure to the amoeba may also occur when using neti pots to rinse your sinuses of cold/allergy-related congestion or conducting religious rituals with tap water. Use only boiled and cooled, distilled, or sterile water for making sinus rinse solutions for neti pots or performing ritual ablutions. If you experience any of the following symptoms after swimming in any warm body of water, please contact your health care provider immediately: headache, fever, nausea, disorientation, vomiting, stiff neck, seizures, loss of balance, or hallucinations. It is essential to seek medical attention right away, as PAM usually becomes fatal within ve days of exposure. Remember, this disease is rare and effective prevention strategies can allow for a safe and relaxing summer swim season. SCHOOL BRIEFS The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's (DEP) Of ce of Ecosystem Projects issued a permit to the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) July 10 to construct the L-8 Divide Structure, a key component of Governor Rick Scott's strategies to restore south Florida ecosystems. The L-8 Divide Structure will assist the movement of stormwater into the L-8 Flow Equalization Basin providing much needed water storage and, when necessary, directing water from the L-8 Flow Equalization Basin south to designated stormwater treatment areas. "The department and the South Florida Water Management District continue to make progress on Governor Scott's strategies to restore south Florida's ecosystems," said DEP Secretary Herschel Vinyard. "This project is another signi cant step forward for the region as we work to increase our water storage and water treatment capacity and move cleaner water south, where it will ensure proper nourishment of Florida's Everglades." The L-8 Flow Equalization Basin will use a 53-foot-deep reservoir capable of storing approximately 45,000 acre-feet of water, or the equivalent of 22,500 Olympic-sized swimming pools of water. The belowground reservoir was a former rock mine site located in central Palm Beach County. The location's unique geology allows for deep, below-ground storage, reduces water loss through seepage and minimizes levee safety concerns. The L-8 Flow Equalization Basin consists of seven interconnected cells that will be utilized to manage basin stormwater. During storm events and other peak ow times, the reservoir will act as a storage feature. During dry periods, the reservoir will deliver ows for optimized treatment prior to those ows entering the Everglades. Other project elements such as the construction of a permanent discharge pump station and the in ow feature are already underway and on schedule for completion by Dec. 2016. The construction of embankment protection features is also nearing completion. Total project cost for the L-8 Flow Equalization Basin and associated projects is $75.5 million, with $35 million spent to date. Construction of the L-8 Divide Structure is scheduled for Aug. 2014 through Oct. 2016. The total project cost for the divide structure is $5.6 million. When completed, the L-8 Equalization Flow Basin will store up to 15 billion gallons of water so it can be treated and moved south to the Everglades. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) requests the public's help in locating three species of rare birds during their breeding seasons. The southeastern American kestrel, the burrowing owl and the painted bunting are rare and declining species that are often overlooked by traditional monitoring programs such as the North American Breeding Bird Survey. People are encouraged to use the FWC's new Rare Bird Registry to quickly map locations where they observe these species, with the option to upload photos and additional comments. It's quick and easy to use. Data submitted will be used by FWC scientists to identify important breeding areas for these species as well as estimate the size of their populations. "The Rare Bird Registry is an excellent opportunity for the public to participate in research," said Karl Miller, a biologist at the FWC's Fish and Wildlife Research Institute. "Sightings will provide the FWC with valuable data to help us study and conserve some of Florida's most unique and interesting species. This new website provides a great way to get involved." To assist the FWC in locating these rare birds, visit MyFWC.com/Get-Involved and select "Citizen Science" then "Sightings" for the Rare Bird Registry link. Butler Clerk of Circuit Court Hendry County, Florida 466032 CN 7/3,10,17,24/2014 17 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee July 24, 2014 Average retail gasoline prices in Florida have fallen 4.7 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.49/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 8,237 gas outlets in Florida. This compares with the national average that has fallen 3.3 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.57/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com. Including the change in gas prices in Florida during the past week, prices yesterday were 13.0 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 11.8 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 10.7 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 10.4 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago. “As expected, motorists continue to see average gasoline prices falling across much of the United States,” said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. “While the chorus is loud, some states in the Great Lakes did see a price jump last week, and as crazy as it sounds, it was due to retail prices falling faster than wholesale prices, likely spurred on by intense competition as prices dropped. Outside of the Great Lakes, prices have been gently falling in the last weekin every state but Wyoming, Ohio, and Indiana, but prices have begun moving lower again in the latter two, while Wyoming prices remain a bit dif cult to forecast due to Wyoming’s rural geography and low demand. Typically, price changes are felt slower in the Rockies because of lower demand provides a week or several buffer against changes in price taking place nationally,” DeHaan said. In all, 13 states saw average prices decline more than 5c/ gal. Gas Price Update Crossword Puzzle

Seminoles run the nation’s fth-largest cow-calf operation with nearly 14,000 Brangus cattle, based on rankings from the National Cattlemen’s Association. According to Alex Johns, the natural resources director for the Seminole Tribe of Florida, Inc., and the current treasurer of the Florida Cattlemen’s Association, the ancestors of the Seminoles were involved with cattle as early as the year 1521. Spanish explorers brought the rst cattle to Florida and the herds were broken up and lost when the British attacked Spanish settlements; Seminoles caught many of the roaming cows and bulls, which helped early Seminole communities ourish. A series of Seminole wars decimated the Tribe and its cattle, beginning in the 1830s and lasting nearly 50 years. Many Seminoles ed deep into the Everglades to avoid capture and relocation to “Indian Territory” in Oklahoma following passage of the U.S. Indian Removal Act. Seminoles who kept their cattle herds were easier to nd and capture since they travelled across the state with them so as not to overgraze; hundreds were forced from Florida as part of the “Trail of Tears.” During the Dust Bowl of the Great Depression, a herd of 700 cattle was shipped from the San Carlos Apache Reservation in southeastern Arizona to the newly-established Brighton Seminole Reservation, northwest of Lake Okeechobee. Although only a few hundred of the cattle survived the trek across the southern tier of states, those that did were the start of a herd that has grown and improved over time. About 5,000 head are in herds owned and managed by 67 individual tribal members and their families, who participate in a co-op program. The balance of the herd is managed by the Tribe on behalf of its 4,000 members. Of the 67 individual tribal members who raise cattle, 55 percent are women, in keeping with the Tribe’s matrilineal, clanbased culture. Until recently, the full focus of Seminole Tribe cattle operations has been birthing calves and raising them to an age of 10 months, when they have been shipped to western feedlots for growth over another eight to 12 months, before eventually being harvested and marketed. The focus has expanded in the last few years to include a branded beef production program under the name “Seminole Pride™,” recently embraced as the rst “Fresh from Florida” beef program. The Seminole tribe of Florida, Inc., and the Florida Department of Agriculture worked together to establish program criteria. The “Fresh from Florida” logo is now placed on all branded Seminole Pride™ beef. Only cattle born and raised in Florida, fed Florida corn and harvested in the state can be certi ed “Fresh from Florida,” a set of criteria that is more dif cult to meet than might be initially imagined. Only one harvester operates in Florida, and corn production is limited to acreage along the northern Florida border, where a few peanut farmers have begun to rotate corn into their production cycles. Seminole Pride™ Beef has developed a following among Florida food purveyors and chefs, who are serving it in more than a 100 of the state’s restaurants, including several high-end restaurants, which use USDA Prime and USDA Choice-rated Seminole Pride™ Angus Beef for steaks, ribs, and roasts. “The biggest problem we have is feeding capacity,” says Alex Johns. “We need more feeding capacity and local corn produced in Florida.” Beef from about 100 head of cattle per week is moving through the supply chain under a contract with Cheney Brothers, a major Florida food distributor based in Riviera Beach. Demand is so strong that the Seminoles have formed an alliance with other Florida beef producers who measure up to strict standards of quality and meet speci c production quantity levels. All Seminole Tribe cattle are electronically tracked from birth as part of an innovative high-tech microchip program called Electronic Identi cation Tagging, which stores each calf’s weight, health, diet, and medical history on a quarter-sized computer chip attached to a calf’s left ear. It provides 100 percent traceability for Seminole cattle from “farm to fork.” Technology is also important to the Seminole Tribe’s calf-breeding program, which uses Brangus genetics to drive continual improvements in calf quality. Brangus is a cross between the Brahman cattle, which are heat tolerant, and the Angus, which have superior carcass quality. The Seminoles are also spreading their cattle interests to neighboring Georgia, where they have recently acquired Salacoa Valley Farms of Fairmount, Ga., northwest of Atlanta. Salacoa is noted for its top-quality registered pure bred Brangus cows and bulls, which are expected to be incorporated into the Seminoles’ successful Florida breeding program. “I think we’re growing at the right time,” says Johns. “We’re in full expansion mode at Salacoa.” Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee July 24, 2014 20 Photo by ACOE/ John CampbellFlows Much Closer to Normal Water ows from Lake Okeechobee into the Caloosahatchee River at the Moore Haven lock and dam during 2014 have been much closer to no rmal following heavy precipitation at the beginning of the 2013 wet season. The water in Lake Okeechobee dropped to its lowest level in almost two years in the middle of June, when it hit 12.30 feet. The lower level means more storage to handle summer rains than in 2013, when an early start to th e wet season kept the lake from receding to typical levels. No water is being released at the St. Lucie Lock and Dam.
